The arthropod community of boreal Norway spruce forests responds variably to stump harvesting

2016

Forest fuel harvesting increases the need to collect not just logging residues but also tree stumps from harvested stands. This biomass removal has raised concern over forest biodiversity. Here, the effects of stump harvesting on spiders, ants, harvestmen, ground beetles and epiedaphic springtails occupying boreal Norway spruce (Picea abies) forest floor were studied two and five years after harvesting by comparing pitfall trap samples from clear-cut sites with and without subsequent stump harvesting and from unharvested mature forests in central Finland. At harvested sites, traps were placed both on intact and exposed mineral soil surface. Open-habitat and generalist ground beetles benefit…

Forest bioenergy harvesting changes carbon balance and risks biodiversity in boreal forest landscapes

2020

Climate solutions relying on forest bioenergy may be in conflict with carbon sequestration and storage by forests as well as conservation of biodiversity. We quantified effects of forest-residue harvesting for bioenergy on both forest carbon balance and biodiversity in a boreal forest landscape. Through a modeling framework, we simulated forest development in four real watersheds with three scenarios: (i) with and (ii) without forest-residue harvesting and (iii) set aside to study the conservation potential of these landscapes in the future without management. We simulated changes in the forest carbon stocks and in the quality and quantity of deadwood resources for 100 years and combined t…

È possibile tracciare un bilancio sull’eucalitticoltura in Sicilia e sulle sue prospettive?

2017

GIS-data related route optimization, hierarchical clustering, location optimization, and kernel density methods are useful for promoting distributed …

2019

Currently, geographic information system (GIS) models are popular for studying location-allocation-related questions concerning bioenergy plants. The aim of this study was to develop a model to investigate optimal locations for two different types of bioenergy plants, for farm and centralized biogas plants, and for wood terminals in rural areas based on minimizing transportation distances. The optimal locations of biogas plants were determined using location optimization tools in R software, and the optimal locations of wood terminals were determined using kernel density tools in ArcGIS. The present case study showed that the utilized GIS tools are useful for bioenergy-related decision-maki…

Planning land use for biogas energy crop production: The potential of cutaway peat production lands

2016

Each year, thousands of hectares of peatland that had been harvested are being released in Finland, which can offer an opportunity to increase energy crops and attain the bioenergy targets for non-agriculture lands. In this study, the Geographic Information System (GIS) method was used to improve the assessment of decentralized renewable energy resources. The amount of peat production lands and future cutaway areas for energy crop production was calculated as a case study by using ArcGIS and the Finnish Topographic database. There are almost 1000 km2 of peat production lands in Finland, and theoretically, approximately 300 km2 of cutaway peatlands could be used for energy crops after 30 yea…

Ruolo del Dipartimento Regionale Azienda Foreste Demaniali della Sicilia nell’ambito del progetto PROFORBIOMED

2013

2013

Effects of biochar addition on anaerobic digestion and comparison of different biochar qualities

2017

Tässä pro gradu -työssä tutkittiin, voidaanko anaerobisen mädätyksen toimintaa parantaa lisäämällä mädätysprosessiin pieniä määriä biohiiltä. Anaerobista mädätystä tutkittiin laboratoriomittakaavan biokaasukokeilla, joissa biokaasureaktoreita käsiteltiin sekä pyrolyyttisesti että hydrodermaalisesti tuotetulla biohiilellä. Biohiilen mahdolliseen kykyyn lievittää ammoniakki-inhibitiota kiinnitettiin huomiota. Seitsemän pyrolyyttisen ja yhden hydrodermaalisen hiilen ominaisuuksia vertailtiin, jotta voitaisiin määrittää soveltuvia biohiiliä anaerobiseen mädätykseen. Biohiilistä analysoitiin ammonium-adsorptiokapasiteetti, irtoavan liukoisen orgaanisen kokonaishiilen (DOC) ja liukoisen kokonaist…
