La universidad en el desarrollo de la cirugía torácica española
2005
The present article analyzes the figures of the university professors who, from 1911, formed part of one of the basic pillars in the development of "Spanish Thoracic Surgery". At that time, there was a certain amount of infighting between general and specialized surgery, which was resolved by allowing specialization after a period of training in general surgery. Universities should not be denied the great merit of having produced well-trained surgeons with a broad general foundation who would later choose a specialty. The figures of Ricardo Lozano Monzon, Francisco Martin Lagos, Jose Gasco, Benjamin Narbona, Carlos Carbonell Antoli, Rafael Vara Lopez, Alfonso de la Fuente Chaos and Jose M. …
The Postwar Years
2009
A few months after the capitulation of the German Reich on May 9, 1945, Huckel’s newly built house, that had withstood the ravages of war, was one of many in Marburg to be confiscated by the Americans. Huckel’s nervous condition deteriorated again under the heavy psychological pressure. His allusion to this in his autobiography was down to earth:
Ageing in an autobiographical context
2000
A cohort study was carried out in 1990 in Jyväskylä, central Finland among 80-year-old residents as part of the Evergreen project. A total of 262 people born in 1910 were interviewed. In addition to epidemiological data, tape-recorded narrative stories focusing on the ageing experience were collected from a subsample of 20 people (10 men and 10 women). A five-year follow-up was carried out with the same cohort in 1995. Out of the 20 people in the original subsample, 17 (8 women and 9 men) were still alive to describe their ageing experience at 85. The analysis proceeded along the hermeneutic circle in the form of dialogue, first with the elderly narrators and then with the tape-recorded mat…

«L’immaginazione terrorizzata» e «la malinconia dissolvente». La tensione diaristica di Giuseppe Antonio Borgese
2020
The five manuscript texts in Italian, written almost entirely in America, to which the writer from Polizzi Generosa entrusted his self-confidence, poetic and civic re-foundation, unfold over a chronological period from 1928 to 1935. We dwell on the intrinsic contamination between autobiography and invention that feeds Borgese’s writing in a web of literary, ethical, spiritual, philosophical and political ramifications. The contemporary reconfiguration of Borgese’s novelistic path in the volume “Il pellegrino appassionato” is also part of this perspective, investigated through the references in the diary to some of the novels that are most nourished by the fundamental themes of private self-…

‘Strong and courageous’ but ‘constantly insecure’: dialogical self theory, intersecting identities, and Christian mixed martial arts
2021
Being a mixed martial arts fighter and a devout Christian seems to present an apparent contradiction that requires identity work to bring these identities into unity. We used Dialogical Self Theory and explored the autobiography of Ron ‘H2O’ Waterman, a professional fighter turned evangelist, to understand how the tensions between the different identities or I-positions were negotiated. We identified two I-positions, ‘Ron the Fighter’ and ‘Ron the Pater Familias’, which related differently to religion, sport, and masculinity. Importantly, the negotiations were not between MMA and faith, but between these two I-positions that served the different needs for self-enhancement and union with som…

Writing the Antithesis of María of Aragón: Alvaro de Luna's Rendering of Giovanni Boccaccio's De mulieribus claris
2013
Abstract: In forming the canon of works that exemplify the debate on women in the fifteenth century, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, there is often one text omitted. This work was composed by perhaps the most notorious figure in Spanish history: Alvaro de Luna. Although more commonly known as the king’s lifelong companion and privado, Luna was also the author of Libro de las claras e virtuosas mugeres . Among the auctoridades that Luna credits, he does mention one medieval writer as a source of inspiration: Giovanni Boccaccio. His work, De claris mulieribus was written a mere 73 years prior to Luna’s Castilian version and it can be argued that Luna’s 15th century work is an adaptatio…
