Shell repair in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum, affected by the Brown Ring Disease (BRD): a biochemical and serological study.

AbstractFor more than two decades, the edible clam Ruditapes philippinarum has been affected by the Brown Ring Disease (BRD), a bacterial infection characterized by the formation of a brown organic deposit in the internal side of the valves. Although this infection is often lethal, in some cases specimens can overcome it by remineralizing over the organic deposit. The goal of the present study is to compare biochemically and immunologically the shell matrices of repaired and healthy zones. Our data suggest that the repair zones exhibit certain variability, which would be the direct consequence of a modification of the secretory regime of calcifying tissues responsible of the repair process.

Effect of methylparaben in Artemia franciscana.

In this study, the toxicity of methylparaben (MeP) an emerging contaminant, was analysed in the sexual species Artemia franciscana, due to its presence in coastal areas and marine saltworks in the Mediterranean region. The acute toxicity (24 h-LC50) of MeP in nauplii was tested and its chronic effect (9 days) evaluated by measuring survival and growth under two sublethal concentrations (0.0085 and 0.017 mg/L). Spatial and seasonal variation in the abundance and composition of phytoplankton and other basal resources (bacteria, terrestrial detritus) influence the availability of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for upper trophic levels in lake food webs. We studied accumulation, composition and content of fatty acids in planktivorous vendace (Coregonus albula) muscle tissue during the summer feeding period (May to late September) in six boreal lakes. Abstract Invasive seaweeds threaten biodiversity and socio-economics values of worldwide marine ecosystems. Understanding to what extent invasive seaweeds can modify local biodiversity is one of the main priorities in conservation ecology. We compared the molluscan assemblage of the invasive Asparagopsis taxiformis with that of the native Ericaria brachycarpa and explore if variation in the molluscan assemblage diversity was related to the substrate attributes (biomass, and thallus, canopy, and interstitial volumes) of the algae.
