2017

ABSTRACTMost academic works on Adolfo Bioy Casares can be put into two categories: those that stress Bioy Casares's political ideas and those that emphasize his mastery of the fantastic genre as if he were two different writers at once. Can we read a politics of the fantastic in his works? Beyond the Peronist polemics in which Casares's books are framed, if we take into consideration the existential logic that runs through his novels—always in the boundaries between life and death, dream and reality, body and spirit, etc.—we note an exploration of the body and living, of the human and the animal. This exploration is informed by scientific laws that progressively invade the spheres of subjec…

Rituaalikuolema ja perhetragedia: Itsemurhan määrittely ja tabuluonteisuus kauhuelokuvassa Midsommar – loputon yö

2021

Suicide, Social Bodies, and Danger : Taboo, Biopower, and Parental Worry in the Films Bridgend (2015) and Bird Box (2018)

2020

In my article I study two Anglophone feature films, Jeppe Rønde's Bridgend (2015) and Susan Bier's Bird Box (2018), from the viewpoints offered by visual cultural studies and the theoretical domains of taboo and biopower. Both systems of control respond to risks and dangers to society, taboo through ideas of contagion and biopower through normative, especially medical discourses by authorized instances of knowledge production. They are reflected also in the audio-visual popular culture seeking to make sense of suicide through entertaining and artistic means. The two films I study present suicide as a contagion that has supernatural (Bird Box) and social origins (Bridgend), and as a force of…

Foucault and the birth of psychopolitics : Towards a genealogy of crisis governance

2020

The article contributes to the genealogy of current tendencies in crisis governance by reconstructing Michel Foucault’s analysis of the application of the notion of crisis in 19th-century psychiatry. This analysis complements and corrects Reinhart Koselleck’s history that viewed crisis as originally a medical, judicial or theological concept that was transferred to the political domain in the 18th century. In contrast, Foucault highlights how the psychiatric application of the concept of crisis was itself political, conditioned by the disciplinary power of the psychiatrist. Unlike the ancient medical concept of crisis that emphasized the doctor’s judgement in observing the event of truth i…

Basel Bank Limiting Policies as Foucauldian Power/Knowledge: Risk as Assemblages, The Case of Basel Bank Limiting Policies as Discourses

2023

I intend to write about Basel bank's limiting technologies from the point of view of trust, coming from the fact that banks have to adjust their risk understanding tools and test them constantly. It is not always known what exactly causes a risk. I am interested in risk-understanding technologies which do not govern this in advance but only require passing certain risk tests. Therefore, I will research the idea of Basel’s bank limiting technologies as assemblages that want connections only with other specified assemblages. For example, certain risk levels must be adjusted to form a harmonious whole that passes these tests. I will argue that by understanding Basel’s bank limiting technologie…
