A spin transition molecular material with a wide bistability domain.

2002

International audience; [Fe(hyptrz)3](4-chloro-3-nitrophenylsulfonate)22 H2O (1; hyptrz=4-(3-hydroxypropyl)-1,2,4-triazole) has been synthesized and its physical properties have been investigated by several physical techniques including magnetic susceptibility measurements, calorimetry, and Mössbauer, optical, and EXAFS spectroscopy. Compound 1 exhibits a spin transition below room temperature, together with a very wide thermal hysteresis of about 50 K. This represents the widest hysteresis loop ever observed for an FeII-1,2,4-triazole spin transition material. The cooperativity is discussed on the basis of temperature-dependent EXAFS studies and of the structural features of a CuII analogu…

EMERGENCE OF TRAVELLING WAVES IN SMOOTH NERVE FIBRES

2008

International audience; An approximate analytical solution characterizing initial condi- tions leading to action potential ¯ring in smooth nerve ¯bres is determined, using the bistable equation. In the ¯rst place, we present a non-trivial sta- tionary solution wave. Then, we extract the main features of this solution to obtain a frontier condition between the initiation of the travelling waves and a decay to the resting state. This frontier corresponds to a separatrix in the projected dynamics diagram depending on the width and the amplitude of the stationary wave.

ANALYTICAL DETERMINATION OF INITIAL CONDITIONS LEADING TO FIRING IN NERVE FIBERS

2007

International audience; An analytical solution characterizing initial conditions leading to action potential firing in smooth nerve fibers is determined, using the bistable equation. In the first place, we present a nontrivial stationary solution wave, then, using the perturbative method, we analyze the stability of this stationary wave. We show that it corresponds to a frontier between the initiation of the travelling waves and a decay to the resting state. Eventually, this analytical approach is extended to FitzHugh-Nagumo model.

Quantum dissipative dynamics of a bistable system in the sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic regime

2016

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a multilevel bistable system coupled to a bosonic heat bath beyond the perturbative regime. We consider different spectral densities of the bath, in the transition from sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic dissipation, and different cutoff frequencies. The study is carried out by using the real-time path integral approach of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional. We find that, in the crossover dynamical regime characterized by damped \emph{intrawell} oscillations and incoherent tunneling, the short time behavior and the time scales of the relaxation starting from a nonequilibrium initial condition depend nontrivially on the spectral properties of the heat bath.

Stochastic resonance and noise delayed extinction in a model of two competing species

2003

We study the role of the noise in the dynamics of two competing species. We consider generalized Lotka-Volterra equations in the presence of a multiplicative noise, which models the interaction between the species and the environment. The interaction parameter between the species is a random process which obeys a stochastic differential equation with a generalized bistable potential in the presence of a periodic driving term, which accounts for the environment temperature variation. We find noise-induced periodic oscillations of the species concentrations and stochastic resonance phenomenon. We find also a nonmonotonic behavior of the mean extinction time of one of the two competing species…

Strong vacuum squeezing from bichromatically driven Kerrlike cavities: from optomechanics to superconducting circuits

2015

AbstractSqueezed light, displaying less fluctuation than vacuum in some observable, is key in the flourishing field of quantum technologies. Optical or microwave cavities containing a Kerr nonlinearity are known to potentially yield large levels of squeezing, which have been recently observed in optomechanics and nonlinear superconducting circuit platforms. Such Kerr-cavity squeezing however suffers from two fundamental drawbacks. First, optimal squeezing requires working close to turning points of a bistable cycle, which are highly unstable against noise thus rendering optimal squeezing inaccessible. Second, the light field has a macroscopic coherent component corresponding to the pump, ma…

Phase-bistable patterns and cavity solitons induced by spatially periodic injection into vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

2014

Spatial rocking is a kind of resonant forcing able to convert a self-oscillatory system into a phase-bistable, pattern forming system, whereby the phase of the spatially averaged oscillation field locks to one of two values differing by $\ensuremath{\pi}$. We propose the spatial rocking in an experimentally relevant system---the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL)---and demonstrate its feasibility through analytical and numerical tools applied to a VCSEL model. We show phase bistability, spatial patterns, such as roll patterns, domain walls, and phase (dark-ring) solitons, which could be useful for optical information storage and processing purposes.

Propagation failure in discrete bistable reaction-diffusion systems: Theory and experiments

2001

International audience; Wave front propagation failure is investigated in discrete bistable reaction-diffusion systems. We present a theoretical approach including dissipative effects and leading to an analytical expression of the critical coupling beyond which front propagation can occur as a function of the nonlinearity threshold parameter. Our theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental results on an equivalent electrical diffusive lattice.
