Dinamiche insediative nel comprensorio di Cignana. Continuità e discontinuità tra l'età imperiale e l'età bizantina

2013

The aim of this paper is to illustrate the development of rural settlement of Roman age, in the hinterland of Cignana (close to Agrigento, Sicily). In this area were identified an Early Roman age villa and a Late Roman/Byzantine village, partially excavated by the Superintendence of Agrigento. Since 2007 the Dep. of Beni Culturali of University of Palermo has carried out an intensive and systematic archaeological survey around Cignana, where about 200 archaeological sites were identified. Many sites (farms, and perhaps also some villa) were inhabited from late Hellenistic to Late Roman/Byzantine ages, and some have become very large villages; also, many settlements are placed along the prin…

Due documenti del Tabulario di S. Maria Maddalena di Valle Giosafat: Messina, febbraio 1176

2022

This article provides a new edition of two Greek documents written in Messina in February 1176 (Archivio di Stato di Palermo, Tabulario di S. Maria Maddalena di Valle Giosafat, poi S. Placido di Calonerò, nrr. 52 e 51). The need to re-edit these two documents, which were previously published in the 19th century by Salvatore Cusa and Giuseppe Spata, arises from a series of legal, administrative and archival issues related to the two parchments, which are discussed in the article. Through an accurate prosopographic analysis of the legal authors of the documents (private individuals and institutions), this contribution attempts first of all to investigate the role of the comes of the galley of…

Legal Texts and Juridical Practice in Byzantine Italy

2021

Italy was reannexed into the Byzantine empire precisely at the time when, in Constantinople, Justinian’s monumental corpus codified Roman juridical production and opened those regulations to a Byzantine interpretation, thereby paving the way for a legal system that would serve as the basis of Byzantine jurisprudence. While legal texts concerning Italy are limited in number, the manuscript tradition of legal books is copious. Furthermore, with respect to other areas of the empire, Italy, together with Egypt, is the best documented “peripheral” region, as far as juridical practice is concerned. This duality is due both to fortuitous archival circumstances and to the real feature of the Byzant…
