On the Uniqueness of the Energy and Momenta of an Asymptotically Minkowskian Space-Time: The Case of the Schwarzschild Metric

2013

Some theorems about the uniqueness of the energy of asymptotically Minkowskian spaces are recalled. The suitability of almost everywhere Gauss coordinates to define some kind of physical energy in these spaces is commented. Schwarzschild metric, when its source radius is larger than the Schwarzschild radius and in the case of a black hole, is considered. In both cases, by using a specific almost everywhere Gaussian coordinate system, a vanishing energy results. We explain why this result is not in contradiction with the quoted theorems. Finally we conclude that this metric is a particular case of what we have called elsewhere a creatable universe.

From supersymmetric to non-supersymmetric black holes

2012

Methods similar to those used for obtaining supersymmetric black hole solutions can be employed to find also non-supersymmetric solutions. We briefly review some of them, with the emphasis on the non-extremal deformation ansatz of [1].

Black holes in five-dimensional Palatinif(R)gravity and implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence

2014

We show that theories having second-order field equations in the context of higher-dimensional modified gravity are not restricted to the family of Lovelock Lagrangians, but can also be obtained if no a priori assumption on the relation between the metric and affine structures of space-time is made (the Palatini approach). We illustrate this fact by considering the case of Palatini $f(R)$ gravities in five dimensions. Our results provide an alternative avenue to explore new domains of the AdS/CFT correspondence without resorting to ad hoc quasitopological constructions.

Numerical Relativistic Hydrodynamics

2008

High Resolution Shock Capturing (HRSC) techniques achieve highly accurate numerical approximations (formally second order or better) in smooth regions of the flow, and capture the motion of unresolved steep gradients without creating spurious oscillations. I will show how these techniques have been extended to relativistic hydrodynamics, making it possible to explore some challenging astrophysical scenarios. I will review recent literature concerning the main properties of different special relativistic Riemann solvers, and discuss several test problems which are commonly used to evaluate the performance of numerical methods in relativistic hydrodynamics. In the second part, I will illustra…

Nonlocal density correlations as a signature of Hawking radiation from acoustic black holes

2008

We have used the analogy between gravitational systems and nonhomogeneous fluid flows to calculate the density-density correlation function of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an acoustic black hole. The emission of correlated pairs of phonons by Hawking-like process results into a peculiar long-range density correlation. Quantitative estimations of the effect are provided for realistic experimental configurations.

Lepton flavor asymmetries and the mass spectrum of primordial black holes

2020

We study the influence of lepton flavour asymmetries on the formation and the mass spectrum of primordial black holes. We estimate the detectability of their mergers with LIGO/Virgo and show that the currently published gravitational wave events may actually be described by a primordial black hole spectrum from non-zero asymmetries. We suggest to use gravitational-wave astronomy as a novel tool to probe how lepton flavour asymmetric the Universe has been before the onset of neutrino oscillations.

Constraining the primordial black hole abundance with 21-cm cosmology

2019

The discoveries of a number of binary black hole mergers by LIGO and VIRGO has reinvigorated the interest that primordial black holes (PBHs) of tens of solar masses could contribute non-negligibly to the dark matter energy density. Should even a small population of PBHs with masses $\gtrsim \mathcal{O}(M_\odot)$ exist, they could profoundly impact the properties of the intergalactic medium and provide insight into novel processes at work in the early Universe. We demonstrate here that observations of the 21cm transition in neutral hydrogen during the epochs of reionization and cosmic dawn will likely provide one of the most stringent tests of solar mass PBHs. In the context of 21cm cosmolog…

Magnetized discs and photon rings around Yukawa-like black holes

2021

We present stationary solutions of geometrically thick discs (or tori) endowed with a self-consistent toroidal magnetic field distribution surrounding a non-rotating black hole in an analytical, static, spherically-symmetric $f(R)$-gravity background. These $f(R)$-gravity models introduce a Yukawa-like modification to the Newtonian potential, encoded in a single parameter $\delta$ which controls the strength of the modified potential and whose specific values affect the disc configurations when compared to the general relativistic case. Our models span different magnetic field strengths, from purely hydrodynamical discs to highly magnetized tori. The characteristics of the solutions are ide…

Confusing Head-On Collisions with Precessing Intermediate-Mass Binary Black Hole Mergers

2021

We report a degeneracy between the gravitational-wave signals from quasi-circular precessing black-hole mergers and those from extremely eccentric mergers, namely head-on collisions. Performing model selection on numerically simulated signals of head-on collisions using models for quasi-circular binaries we find that, for signal-to-noise ratios of 15 and 25, typical of Advanced LIGO observations, head-on mergers with respective total masses of $M\in (125,300)M_\odot$ and $M\in (200,440)M_\odot$ would be identified as precessing quasi-circular intermediate-mass black hole binaries, located at a much larger distance. Ruling out the head-on scenario would require to perform model selection usi…

THREE-DIMENSIONAL RELATIVISTIC SIMULATIONS OF ROTATING NEUTRON-STAR COLLAPSE TO A KERR BLACK HOLE

2006

We present a new three-dimensional fully general-relativistic hydrodynamics code using high-resolution shock-capturing techniques and a conformal traceless formulation of the Einstein equations. Besides presenting a thorough set of tests which the code passes with very high accuracy, we discuss its application to the study of the gravitational collapse of uniformly rotating neutron stars to Kerr black holes. The initial stellar models are modeled as relativistic polytropes which are either secularly or dynamically unstable and with angular velocities which range from slow rotation to the mass-shedding limit. We investigate the gravitational collapse by carefully studying not only the dynami…
