The aim of this paper is to underline the importance of detecting similarities or at least, ‘family resemblances’ among different fields of investigation. As a matter of fact, the attention will be focused mainly on fuzzy sets and a few features of human sciences; however, I hope that the arguments provided and the general context outlined will show that the problem of picking up (dis)similarities among different disciplines is of a more general interest. A phytochemical investigation of acetone and chloroform extracts of the aerial parts of Onopordum cynarocephalum Boiss. et Blanche was carried out. It led to the isolation of two new sesquiterpenes, the elemane aldehyde (2) and the eudesmane (11), together with 15 known compounds: two lignans (1 and 15) and 13 sesquiterpenes (3–10, 12–14, 16, 17). The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses, especially 1D and 2D NMR spectra. The anti-growth effect against three human melanoma cell lines, M14, A375, and A2058, of the different extracts and compounds of O. cynarocephalum was also investigated. Background: To date, only scarce information is available about the diaptomid copepods of the Middle East despite the ecological and biogeographical importance of the family Diaptomidae in the inland waters of the Holarctic region. Moreover, the taxonomic status of some of the taxa occurring in the area is in need of revision. We studied crustaceans collected from temporary and permanent lentic water bodies in Israel with the aim of providing an updated census of the diaptomid copepods occurring in the country. Per tal de commemorar el 9 d’octubre, dins la col·lecció de publicacions de l’Ajuntament de València, dirigida per Manuel Bas Carbonell, que duu aquest nom (“9 d’ocubre”), es reedita en facsímil l’exemplar conservat a la Biblioteca de la Universitatde València, digitalitzat a la Biblioteca Virtual Cervantes, i es completa en algunes pàgines amb l’exemplar propietat de The Hispanic Society of America. L’edició porta una breu Introducció (dotze pàgines, sense numerar) del director de la col·lecció,perfecte coneixedor del món bibliogràfic valencià. Transcric les paraules de presentació del llibre, a l’acte de presentació, que va tenir lloc a l’Ajuntament de València.
