Impact of a reduction of plasmalogen levels on Muller cell metabolism
2016
Purpose : Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is the leading cause of blindness in premature children resulting from abnormal vascular development. Previous studies have shown that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can modulate physiologic and pathologic angiogenesis. Data from our laboratory suggest that plasmalogens, that are phospholipids that concentrate omega-3 PUFAs, are involved in the regulation of post-natal retinal vascular development through the action of a calcium-independent phospholipase A2 (iPLA2) (Saab et al PLoSONE 2014). In the retina, Müller cells are known to play crucial functions in retinal angiogenesis as well as to be rich in plasmalogens and to express phosp…

Los poetas ciegos y la ceguera en la poesía árabe: algunos casos destacados
2013
This paper deals with the verses of some relevant and famous blind Arab classical poets that talked about their blindness like the cases of al-A‛¿à, Ba¿¿ār ibn Burd and Abū-l-ɈAlā¿ al-Ma‛arrī among others. The study shows how each one of them faced his disability and the influence that their blindness had on their poetic production. This paper contains also the translation from the Arabic and tha analysis of the verses inspired by blindness to some seeing poets of Granada and the moderm Arabic poetry. El artículo se ocupa de los versos de algunos poetas árabes ciegos que se han hecho famosos en la literatura árabe clásica y que nos hablan de la ceguera como es el caso de al-A‛ à, Ba ār ibn …

Visual Health Nanocomposites: Present and Future
2021
Background: In recent years, the therapeutics for eye diseases as retinopathy diabetic, dry eye, glaucoma and contact lenses fabrication are including nanocompounds as ocular drug delivery systems, biomarkers for detection of eye diseases, copper and silver ions that has been incorporated by means of the nanotechnology for the production of less toxic and more effective alternatives. Several compounds such as silver nanoparticles, turmeric-based nanocomposites, neovascularization blockers and nanoparticles extracted from the plant Costus pictus among others have been researched for this purpose. Those compounds are some of the promising research efforts that are studying and will contribute…
Classifying DME vs Normal SD-OCT volumes: A review
2016
International audience; This article reviews the current state of automatic classification methodologies to identify Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) versus normal subjects based on Spectral Domain OCT (SD-OCT) data. Addressing this classification problem has valuable interest since early detection and treatment of DME play a major role to prevent eye adverse effects such as blindness. The main contribution of this article is to cover the lack of a public dataset and benchmark suited for classifying DME and normal SD-OCT volumes, providing our own implementation of the most relevant methodologies in the literature. Subsequently, 6 different methods were implemented and evaluated using this comm…
On the discrimination of spatial intervals by the blind cave fish (Anoptichthys jordani).
1986
The performance of the blind cave fish in discriminating spatial intervals was investigated. The fish had to discriminate between pairs of grids consisting of equidistant vertical bars. The intervals between the bars on the grid to be chosen were kept constant while the intervals between the bars on the other grid were altered in steps so as to become gradually closer to the interval between the bars on the grid to be chosen. It was found that the fish were still able to discriminate between the two grids when the difference between the bar intervals amounted to at least 1.5 mm. In interpreting the results it was concluded that the phase information in the stimulus on the skin of the fish m…
