Neural Networks to Determine the Relationships Between Business Innovation and Gender Aspects
2021
Gender aspects of management, innovation and entrepreneurship are gaining more and more importance as cross-cutting issues for researchers, practitioners and decision makers. Extant literature pays a growing attention to the hypothesis that there exists a correlation between the gender diversity of corporate boards of directors and the business attitude to innovation. In this paper we introduce a working framework to test the aforementioned hypothesis and to examine the correlation between board diversity and innovation perception of a business. This framework is based on correlation computation and feed-forward neural networks, and it is used to evaluate whether the gender component may be…
Board Evaluation in Italian Listed Companies
2016
In the last decade performance evaluation of the Board of Directors has become a best practice at national and international level. Italy is an interesting area of analysis given the high concentration of ownership that characterizes companies, including listed companies. In this context the choices of governance that affect the level of disclosure, for which the expectation is to have a low level of disclosure on the practice of BE (Board Evaluation). The first purpose of this paper is to present a resume on the state of the art in terms of BE for Italian listed companies at 31st December 2012, in terms of presence/absence of the practice of disclosure and its more or less extensive disclos…
Ultrascale+ for the new ATLAS calorimeter trigger board dedicated to jet identification
2018
To cope with the expected increase in luminosity at the Large Hadron Collider in 2021, the ATLAS collaboration is planning a major detector upgrade to be installed during Long Shutdown 2. As a part of this, the Level 1 trigger, based on calorimeter data, will be upgraded to exploit the fine granularity readout using a new system of Feature EXtractors (FEXs), which each reconstruct different physics objects for the trigger selection. The Jet FEX (jFEX) is one of three FEXs and has been conceived to identify small/large area jets, large area tau leptons, missing transverse energy and the total sum of the transverse energy. The use of the latest generation Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array …
A European mind? Europeanisation of football fan discussions in online message boards
2021
Across Europe, national professional football leagues have seen increasing numbers of players from other EU states, while the Champions League and the Europa League have become a focal point for ma...
Strangers on the board
2019
The internationalization of firms has led to boards becoming more international as well. In this study, we investigate the consequences of board internationalization. In particular, by drawing on research on language and board dynamics, we identify theory-based reasons why board internationalization could increase, or decrease, earnings management practices. We use agency theory, stressing how board internationalization may positively or negatively affect monitoring quality of boards. Next to agency theory, we use theories explaining how language differences in the boardroom complicates communication and how differences in language structures (referred to as linguistic relativity in the lit…
Analysis of soliton dynamics and noise induced effects on the superconductive lifetime in long Josephson junctions.
2013
The influence of various noise sources on the transient dynamics of long Josephson junctions (LJJ) is investigated in the presence of an oscillating bias current signal and a noise source with Gaussian or non-Gaussian (i.e. Cauchy-Lorentz or Lévy-Smirnov) probability distributions. These systems are computationally analyzed integrating the perturbed Sine-Gordon equation describing the phase evolution. We found evidence of noise induced effects on trends of the mean escape time (MET) from the superconductive metastable state, varying different system parameters, as the bias frequency, noise intensity and junction length. In particular, we find resonant activation (RA) and noise enhanced stab…
Transient dynamics in driven long Josephson junctions.
2013
The switching time from the superconductive metastable state of a long Josephson junction (LJJ)[1] is computationally analyzed in the framework of the perturbed sine-Gordon equation. The model includes an external bias current term and a stochastic noise source, i.e. a Lévy noise term. The effects of this noise on the mean escape time (MET) from the superconductive state are analyzed. The investigation is performed by considering a wide range of values of system parameters and different noise statistics: Gaussian, Cauchy-Lorentz and Lévy-Smirnov[2]. We found evidence of well known noise induced phenomena on the MET behavior, that is the noise enhanced stability (NES) and resonant activation…
The novelty-seeking phenotype modulates the long-lasting effects of intermittent ethanol administration during adolescence.
2013
The aim of the present study was to investigate if a novelty-seeking phenotype mediates the long-lasting consequences of intermittent EtOH intoxication during adolescence. The hole board test was employed to classify adolescent mice as High- or Low-Novelty Seekers. Subsequently, animals were administered ethanol (1.25 or 2.5 g/kg) on two consecutive days at 48-h intervals over a 14-day period. Anxiety levels - measured using the elevated plus maze- spontaneous motor activity and social interaction test were studied 3 weeks later. A different set of mice underwent the same procedure, but received only the 2.5 g/kg dose of ethanol. Three weeks later, in order to induce CPP, the same animals w…
Bupropion induced changes in exploratory and anxiety-like behaviour in NMRI male mice depends on the age
2013
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of the antidepressant bupropion on anxiety and novelty-seeking in adolescent mice of different ages and adults. Behavioural differences between early adolescent, late adolescent and adult NMRI mice were measured both in the elevated plus-maze and the hole-board tasks following acute administration of bupropion (5, 10, 15, 20 mg/kg) or saline. In the plus maze test, early and late adolescent mice treated with bupropion (10, 15 mg/kg, respectively) had lower percentages of entries in the open-arms compared to their vehicle controls. Adult mice treated with bupropion did not differ from their vehicle controls. These results suggest that the effec…
Temporal patterns analysis of rat behavior in hole-board.
2009
The aim of present research was to analyze the temporal structure of rodent's anxiety-related behavior in hole-board apparatus (HB). Fifteen male Wistar rats were tested for 10 min. Video files, collected for each subject, were coded by means of a software coder and event log files generated for each subject. To assess temporal relationships among behavioral events, log files were processed by means of a t-pattern analysis. 14 two-element t-patterns, four t-patterns encompassing 3 events and 2 t-patterns encompassing 4 and 5 events respectively were revealed. It was demonstrated that rat behavior in HB was mainly structured on the basis of the temporal patterning among exploratory events; t…
