Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis: a multicentre study to compare revised McDonald-2010 and Filippi-2010 criteria

2018

MRI has been formally included in the diagnostic work-up of patients with a suspicion of multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2001, to demonstrate disease dissemination in space (DIS) and time (DIT) and to exclude alternative diagnoses.1 Over time, these criteria have been modified to simplify their use and to clarify specific aspects (eg, spinal cord findings).2 One aspect marginally analysed in the diagnostic work-up of patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) is the role of intracortical lesions (ICLs), which are a prominent feature of MS and contribute to disability and cognitive impairment.2 A single-centre study3 showed that inclusion of ICL for the evaluation of DIS in CIS increased th…

Poor estimates of motor variability are associated with longer grooved pegboard times for middle-aged and older adults

2018

Goal-directed movements that involve greater motor variability are performed with an increased risk that the intended goal will not be achieved. The ability to estimate motor variability during such actions varies across individuals and influences how people decide to move about their environment. The purpose of our study was to identify the decision-making strategies used by middle-aged and older adults when performing two goal-directed motor tasks and to determine if these strategies were associated with the time to complete the grooved pegboard test. Twenty-one middle-aged (48 ± 6 yr; range 40–59 yr, 15 women) and 20 older adults (73 ± 4 yr; range 65–79 yr, 8 women) performed two target…

Children’s Engagement with Mathematics in Kindergarten Mediated by the Use of Digital Tools

2013

The purpose of this chapter is to study children’s engagement with mathematics in kindergarten mediated by digital tools within the context of interactive whiteboard (IWB). Our study reports from a research project aiming at analysing in what ways digital tools may nurture children’s appropriation processes relative to mathematics. In adopting a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, observations together with video recordings have been analysed. Our study shows that the children make sense of the digital tools and are able to apply the tools purposefully due to the interaction with an adult within the zone of proximal development (ZPD). The children externalise their reason…

The Internet as a Pedagogical Tool in the Writing Process: A Research-Based Approach

2017

This article examines how the Internet can be used to ease the process of writing by suggesting resources for the planning, writing and revising stages and how they can be used to carry out a writing task. One such resource is the Blackboard platform, which serves as a discussion tool and for teacher-to-student and student-to-student feedback. Based on sound L2 writing theories and ICTs, a pedagogical proposal for a writing task is proposed and explained that involves invention and organizing techniques; peer and teacher evaluation using the Blackboard platform; activities to practice argumentative skills, the five-paragraph essay and paragraph structure and evaluation sheets with criteria …

Data mining, dashboards and statistics: a powerful framework for the chemical design of molecular nanomagnets

2021

Abstract Three decades of intensive research in molecular nanomagnets have brought the magnetic memory in molecules from liquid helium to liquid nitrogen temperature. The enhancement of this operational temperature relies on a wise choice of the magnetic ion and the coordination environment. However, serendipity, oversimplified theories and chemical intuition have played the main role. In order to establish a powerful framework for statistically driven chemical design, we collected chemical and physical data for lanthanide-based nanomagnets to create a catalogue of over 1400 published experiments, developed an interactive dashboard (SIMDAVIS) to visualise the dataset, and applied inferentia…

Holographic Observations of Centimeter-Scale Nonuniformities within Marine Stratocumulus Clouds

2020

Abstract Data collected with a holographic instrument [Holographic Detector for Clouds (HOLODEC)] on board the High-Performance Instrumented Airborne Platform for Environmental Research Gulfstream-V (HIAPER GV) aircraft from marine stratocumulus clouds during the Cloud System Evolution in the Trades (CSET) field project are examined for spatial uniformity. During one flight leg at 1190 m altitude, 1816 consecutive holograms were taken, which were approximately 40 m apart with individual hologram dimensions of 1.16 cm × 0.68 cm × 12.0 cm and with droplet concentrations of up to 500 cm−3. Unlike earlier studies, minimally intrusive data processing (e.g., bypassing calculation of number concen…

Aircraft type influence on contrail properties

2013

The investigation of the impact of aircraft parameters on contrail properties helps to better understand the climate impact from aviation. Yet, in observations, it is a challenge to separate aircraft and meteorological influences on contrail formation. During the CONCERT campaign in November 2008, contrails from 3 Airbus passenger aircraft of types A319-111, A340-311 and A380-841 were probed at cruise under similar meteorological conditions with in situ instruments on board DLR research aircraft Falcon. Within the 2 min-old contrails detected near ice saturation, we find similar effective diameters Deff (5.2–5.9 μm), but differences in particle number densities nice (162–235 cm−3) and…

The influence of board diversity on financial performance : an empirical study of Asia-Pacific companies

2014

Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon – Universitetet i Agder 2014 This study investigates board diversity and its influence on financial performance. The main purpose of the study is to examine whether nationality and gender diversity influence financial performance as measured by Tobin’s Q. The study examines the biggest 50 Asia-Pacific companies according to Forbes Magazine. Data analysis is performed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Two-Stage Least Square (2SLS) regressions analysis. The results show that gender diversity of board member has a positive influence on financial performance. However, nationality of board member contributes no significant influence on financial perf…

Treatment with electrical stimulation of sensory nerves improves motor function and disability status in persons with multiple sclerosis: A pilot stu…

2021

Abstract Declines in motor function are closely associated with decreases in sensory function in multiple sclerosis (MS). The purpose of our study was to assess the changes in motor function and disability status elicited by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to limb muscles of individuals with MS. Fifteen persons with MS and 11 age-matched healthy controls were evaluated before and after receiving 9 treatment sessions during which TENS was applied over the tibialis anterior and rectus femoris muscles of each leg, and over the median nerve and the thenar eminence of each hand. Each evaluation session involved completing two questionnaires (fatigue and walking limitations) an…
