A PC-based wattmeter for accurate measurements in sinusoidal and distorted conditions: Setup and experimental characterization

This paper presents the development of a high-accuracy sampling wattmeter, which can be employed with both sinusoidal and distorted input signals. The proposed personal computer (PC)-based system is a simple, portable, and low-cost solution because it is based on two commercial data acquisition boards connected to a common PC. Owing to this solution, the voltage is sensed directly, avoiding expensive voltage dividers, while the current is sensed by means of a noninductive current shunt. A low-cost compact uniplanar Quasi–Yagi printed antenna

A low cost directive uniplanar broadband printed Quasi–Yagi antenna design is presented. As a particular realization, some prototypes have been designed to operate in the 2.45 GHz band. They have been then modeled, fabricated onto standard printed circuit dielectric substrate and tested successfully. For the design and the modeling processes, we have make use of FDTD based in-house developed algorithms. The obtained bandwidth is, for all the considered cases, better than 15%. The main radiation characteristics are 2–5.5 dBi gain, depending on the number of director elements, and better than 25 dB front-to-back ratio. Design of Yagi-like printed antennas for WLAN applications

A directive broadband printed Yagi-like antenna design is presented. We have focused on the 2.45 GHz WLAN band, at which some designs have been carried out. For the design and the modelling processes, we made use of FDTD based in-house developed algorithms. Some selected prototypes have then been fabricated onto a low-cost printed circuit board dielectric substrate and tested successfully. Bandwidths higher than 10% and moderate to high (>7 dBi) gains can be obtained this way. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Charge measurement using an array of Faraday’s Cups on a printed circuit board

Abstract An absolute method of measuring charge is to use a Faraday Cup (FC) principle. This study relates to a novel method of measuring charge on a flat substrate, which is coated with charged powder particles. The substrate consists of an array of FC with different dimensions. The sensor is manufactured using flame-retardant printed circuit board (PCB) technology. The objective of this work is to reduce the charge sharing by developing a grounded shield cup around each conductive cup in the array and accordingly increase cup-to-ground capacitance. The results have confirmed that the improved well shielding would provide a more accurate quantitative charge measurement.

Yacht performance monitoring in real sailing conditions

Abstract In this paper a multi-method approach is used to setup and validate a monitoring system applied to a small sailing boat during real sailing conditions. This monitoring system is able to transform the data coming from some typical devices installed on board into information about the deformed state of the boat. GPS, Wind Data Logger and cameras have been installed on the boat to measure its route and speed, the apparent wind velocity and direction and the positions of the crew members. Concentrations of monosaccharides in humic substances in the early stages of humification.

Deteriorated liquid packaging board (LPB) and biowaste compost are matrices, mainly consisting of cellulose, in the early stages of humification. Degradative studies on these matrices allow an examination of the role of carbohydrates in the synthesis of humic substances. Samples of different age were collected and divided by extraction into hot water extract (HWE), bitumen, humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) and humin or residual fibre fractions. The following monosaccharides were identified in these fractions: L-arabinose, D-ribose, D-xylose, L-fucose, D-mannose, D-fructose, D-galactose, D-glucose, L-rhamnose and xylitol. Chlorinated dioxins and dibenzothiophenes in fly ash samples from combustion of peat, wood chips, refuse derived fuels and liquid packaging boards

Abstract Peat, wood chips, refuse derived fuel and liquid packaging board in different combinations were burned at a temperature of at least 850 °C. Fly ash samples from these combustions were analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDBTs) by high resolution GC/MS. The concentrations of tri- and tetrachlorodibenzothiophenes and tri-, tetra- and pentachlorodioxins were highest when mixtures of wood chips and refuse derived fuel (RDF) were burned.
