In vitro antibacterial and biofilm inhibitory activity of the sawdust essential oil of Tetraclinis articulata (vahl) against catheter-associated Stap…
2021
Abstract The aim of the present study was to determine the chemical composition, antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the essential oil of sawdust from root burl wood of T. articulata. Nine strains including 8 clinical isolates from catheters-related infections and one ATCC 25923 were tested. Twenty-seven different compounds were identified by GC–MS in the essential oil of T. articulata extracted by hydrodistillation. Carvacrol and cedrol were the principal compounds representing 34.37 ± 0.07 and 11.07 ± 0.09 respectively. The EO had a strong antibacterial activity against all strains including one Multidrug-Resistant (MDR) and two Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus strains. Inhibition …
Boat traffic in Lampedusa waters (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea) and its relation to the coastal distribution of common bottlenose dolphin (Tur…
2010
The volume of boat traffic and its potential connection to the coastal distribution of the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was evaluated off Lampedusa Island (Strait of Sicily). From July to September 2006 daily surveys were carried out at eight sites along the coast, three times a day, to assess the number, type, and size of boats moving, fishing, or stationed in Lampedusa waters. The study area was divided into four geographic areas: northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast. Data were analyzed to determine the difference in the number of boats among the areas, sampling months, and times of day. The presence of dolphins was monitored by standardized land-based observat…
A SIMULTANEOUS ENGINEERING APPROACH TO THE YACHT DESIGN
2009
The authors describe the approach applied to the design and manufacturing of a 15” dinghy which will challenge other similar sailing boats in fleet regattas. The Simultaneous Engineering approach appears to be the most powerful instrument since it permits to keep under control many variables simultaneously and then to reduce the Time To Market. Starting from regatta rules and limitations, the hull shape has been chosen and then modelled with a parametric CAD software. Such a model has been managed in order to be suitable for both FEM (Finite Element Method) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses.
The project DINAUTIS: an ecosystem approach to assess effects of recreational boating noise on Marine Protected Areas
2009
Anthropogenic noise, generated by recreational and commercial boating, affects ecological responses of marine species particularly where the noise is chronic like coastal areas largely exploited by tourism. To date, most research to seek direct relationships between noise and ecological responses of biota is based on laboratory experiments, while scant information is available from at whole-of-ecosystem level from the wild. DINAUTIS is a project designed to study the multi-level ecological response of marine biota subjected to chronic noise and the effect of some “by product” of recreational boating (e.g. PAH contamination). Thus, in the present study, we report on different aspects studied…

Leisure Boating Environmental Footprint: A Study of Leisure Marinas in Palermo, Italy
2022
Ports have played a significant role in the touristic development and further economic growth of Italy. It is the country with the highest number of berths among the nations in the Mediterranean Sea; over time, Italy has created ports with a range of functions. Therefore, it is of vital importance to evaluate the potential pollutants generated from these docks and propose ways to eliminate those problems. A survey that asked about the carbon footprint and the quality of the water in the water footprint calculation was created and distributed to the management of the marinas’ operations. After receiving the completed surveys, the data were analyzed and translated using emission factors into …
Il diportismo nautico e le attività economiche in Sardegna
2013
Operating in a complex globalized world, tourism destinations are continuously challenged to improve their performance in order to stay competitive in a dynamic environment they have to identify new potential markets, to develop networks, clusters and new products. Today the current forms of tourims that are emerging request to spend leisure time as actively as possible and the development of niche tourism with these characteristics can represent a sustainable development strategy for destinations ...
Over the last two decades, the port city of Saint-Nazaire has encouraged urban redevelopment without necessarily following the models suggested by other European cities. An important cultural and touri…
Sisävesien mikrotonnisto : pienet höyrylaivat Suomen ja erityisesti Kainuun sisävesiliikenteessä 1870-luvulta 1960-luvulle
2016
The significance in Finland of shipping on inland waterways has been great. This is due to the topography of the country with its many lakes and to the fact that the vast waterways in their natural state were easily navigable. The construction of canals resulted in even more extensive interconnected inland waterways. This study explores the tasks of the steamships plying these internal waterways, their numbers and significance, and also changes and the reasons for these between different inland waterways, as regards different types of vessels and shipowners in the period from the 1870s to the 1960s. Special attention is paid to steamships smaller than 19 net register tons. This limit was ch…
Waterfront e patrimonio militare: la base sottomarina di Saint-Nazaire
2012
Isolated from its harbour by the submarine base built during World War II, Saint-Nazaire has added to its development over the last two decades, without referring to major European models. An important arts and tourist center has been built around the port zone, close to the German submarine base. The converted military structure, which is situated in an impressive public space, has been endowed with a new sense of identity. It stands out as the main element in the urban regeneration process, focusing on the cultural and tourist character of the programme and aiming to reinforce the relationship between the city and its port.
