Ivy and Bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz
2012
"Ivy and bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz" examines how the representation of the ruins of the Blitz is informed by the aesthetic and semiotic tension between abstraction, modernist purity and picturesque accretion. Subsequently building on the notion of reversibility, it explores the way wartime destruction and/or cultural decline is recorded as well as counteracted and compensated for in works by Elizabeth Bowen, Herbert Furst, Claire Leighton, Rose Macaulay, John Piper, and Virginia Woolf. The trope of reversibility provides a template to consider some of the sites where aesthetic conflicts are re-enacted, from blitzed spaces to the printed page as threatened modernist art…

Roman wood sculptures from Burgundy
2013
For the first time, the corpus of Roman wood sculptures from Burgundy is gathered together in a catalogue, with added photographic documents and bibliography. The twenty-five sculptures are listed and studied from a stylistic, iconographic and technical point of view. In the XIIth century, an actual school of monastic wood sculpture seemed to develop within the boundaries of the duchy of Burgundy, bringing a great diversity as far as formal and technical contributions are concerned. The sculptures that are the most representative to help the understanding of those numerous contributions are thoroughly studied. Their stylistic relationships with manuscripts dating back from the Carolingian R…
2009
The excavations started inside and in the immediate neighbourhood of the roman church Saint-Pierre of Thaon since 1998 have enabled to underline several phases of occupation between the IInd century AD and the XIIth with, from the VIIth century, the establishment of a church modified repeatedly. Among 437 burials (from VIIth to XVIIIth century), devices combining wood and stones (cofferings) or showing important remains of wood perfectly preserved (whole boards of coffin nailed down and pegged) were studied and are presented in this article.
Champigneulles, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Bonnefontaine.
