Analysis of Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra of Peptides

2020

Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) is one of the major spectroscopic tools to study peptides. Nevertheless, a full understanding of what determines the signs and intensities of VCD bands of these compounds in the amide I and amide II spectral regions is still far from complete. In the present work, we study the origin of these VCD signals using the general coupled oscillator (GCO) analysis, a novel approach that has recently been developed. We apply this approach to the ForValNHMe model peptide in both α-helix and β-sheet configurations. We show that the intense VCD signals observed in the amide I and amide II spectral regions essentially have the same underlying mechanism, namely, the th…

Vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopy for probing the expression of chirality in mechanically planar chiral rotaxanes

2020

Mechanically interlocked molecules can exhibit molecular chirality that arises due to the mechanical bond rather than covalent stereogenic units. Developing applications of such systems is made challenging by the absence of techniques for assigning the absolute configuration of products and methods to probe how the mechanical stereogenic unit influences the spatial arrangements of the functional groups in solution. Here we demonstrate for the first time that Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) can be used to not only discriminate between mechanical stereoisomers but also provide detailed information on their (co)conformations. The latter is particularly important as these molecules are now…

Molecular equilibrium structures from experimental rotational constants and calculated vibration–rotation interaction constants

2002

A detailed study is carried out of the accuracy of molecular equilibrium geometries obtained from least-squares fits involving experimental rotational constants B(0) and sums of ab initio vibration-rotation interaction constants alpha(r)(B). The vibration-rotation interaction constants have been calculated for 18 single-configuration dominated molecules containing hydrogen and first-row atoms at various standard levels of ab initio theory. Comparisons with the experimental data and tests for the internal consistency of the calculations show that the equilibrium structures generated using Hartree-Fock vibration-rotation interaction constants have an accuracy similar to that obtained by a dir…

Comparison between FSW and bonded lap joints - A preliminary investigation

2017

Difficult to weld aluminium alloys can be effectively joined by different alternative processes. Friction Stir Welding (FSW), among the solid-state processes and adhesive bonding represent two very attractive techniques. They allow the production of highly resistant joints avoiding the formation of the typical fusion weld defects. The aim of this work is to identify, analyse and compare the mechanical properties of AA6016 aluminium alloy joints made out of 1 mm thick sheets. FSW lap joints were and epoxy bonded joints were produced. Using the FSW results as benchmark, the overlap required in the bonded joint was identified to ensure the same static strength. Once the geometric configuration…

Stereoelectronic Properties of N-acetyl-α,β-dehydroamino acid N′-methylamides

1998

α,β-Dehydroamino acids are useful peptide modifiers. However, their stereoelectronic properties still remain insufficiently recognized. Based on FTIR experiments in the range of νs(N-H), AI, AII and νs(Cα=Cβ) and ab initio calculations with B3LYP/6-31G*, we studied the solution conformational preferences and the amide electron density perturbation of Ac-ΔXaa-NHMe, where ΔXaa = ΔAla, (E)-ΔAbu, (Z)-ΔAbu, (Z)-ΔLeu, (Z)-ΔPhe and ΔVal. Each of these dehydroamides adopts a C5 structure, which in Ac-ΔAla-NHMe is fully extended and accompanied by the strong C5 hydrogen bond. Interaction with bond Cα=Cβ lessens the amidic resonance within the flanking amide groups. The N-terminal C=O bond is noticea…

Electrical characterization of deoxyribonucleic acid hybridization in metal-oxide-semiconductor-like structures

2012

In this work, metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)-like sensors in which deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands are covalently immobilized either on Si oxide or on a gold surface were electrically characterized. Si oxide fabrication process allowed us to have a surface insensitive to the solution pH. A significant shift in the flat band voltage was measured after single strand DNA immobilization (+0.47 +/- 0.04 V) and after the complementary strand binding (+0.07 +/- 0.02 V). The results show that DNA sensing can be performed using a MOS structure which can be easily integrated in a more complex design, thus avoiding the problems related to the integration of micro-electrochemical cells.

Evaluation of interlaminar delaminations in titanium-graphite fibre metal laminates by infrared NDT techniques

2018

Abstract Fibre Metal Laminates (FMLs) describe a number of aerospace-grade layered structural materials where thin metal alloy foils are interleaved with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) plies. Such material hybridisation at the layer meso-scale poses a challenge for non-destructive testing (NDT). On the other hand, the need for NDT inspection of FMLs arises due to the potential development of interlayers disbonds, both during fabrication or in-service. This work describes the successful implementation of two Infrared-NDT approaches to evaluate a defected FML panel made of Titanium/Graphite (Ti-Gr). One technique is based on the modulation of the deployed heat from a low-cost halogen lamp, to…

Anodic Alumina Membranes for Fuel Cell Technology and Nanostructure Template-assisted Deposition

2009

Anodic alumina membranes (AAMs) with ordered porous structure have been investigated as possible ionic conducting membranes for thin film (= 50μm) fuel cells (TFFC) and as templates for the production of a variety of nanostructure arrays. The aims of this work are to present some of our recent results pertaining to the functionalisation of AAM with proton conductors for the production of membranes to be used in hydrogen/oxygen TFFC, at low or intermediate temperature (25°C ≦ T ≦ 250°C), and to the fabrication by template technique of nanowires/nanotubes arrays of oxide and hydroxides for possible future technological application.

Incorporation of a tricationic subphthalocyanine in an organic photovoltaic device

2013

A new tricationic subphthalocyanine was synthesized and employed as light-harvesting and donor material in an ionic solid state organic photovoltaic cell. The incorporation of ionic dyes in organic photovoltaics aims to take advantage of ionic movement in order to enhance the charge transport properties of these materials. In this preliminary study, we report the results obtained in the fabrication of a partially solution-processed device with a cationic dye, where an effiency of 0.5% was reached.
