Luminescent Ionic Transition-Metal Complexes for Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

2012

Higher efficiency in the end-use of energy requires substantial progress in lighting concepts. All the technologies under development are based on solid-state electroluminescent materials and belong to the general area of solid-state lighting (SSL). The two main technologies being developed in SSL are light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), but in recent years, light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) have emerged as an alternative option. The luminescent materials in LECs are either luminescent polymers together with ionic salts or ionic species, such as ionic transition-metal complexes (iTMCs). Cyclometalated complexes of Ir(III) are by far the most util…

Impact of Surface Charge Directionality on Membrane Potential in Multi-ionic Systems

2020

The membrane potential (Vmem), defined as the electric potential difference across a membrane flanked by two different salt solutions, is central to electrochemical energy harvesting and conversion. Also, Vmem and the ionic concentrations that establish it are important to biophysical chemistry because they regulate crucial cell processes. We study experimentally and theoretically the salt dependence of Vmem in single conical nanopores for the case of multi-ionic systems of different ionic charge numbers. The major advances of this work are (i) to measure Vmem using a series of ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-, and SO42-) that are of interest to both energy conversion and cell biochemistry, (ii) to…

Molecular “Pincer” from a Diimidazolium Salt: A Study of Binding Ability

2013

The anion recognition ability of the dicationic imidazolium salt 3,3′-di-n-octyl-1,1′- (1,3-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonate ([m-Xyl-(oim)2][1,5-NDS]) was investigated in acetonitrile solution by means of proton NMR titrations. A wide range of anions, comprising simple inorganic ions, halides, and mono- and dicarboxylates was taken into account. The study showed that this receptor binds carboxylate anions more strongly than halides. Moreover [m- Xyl-(oim)2][1,5-NDS] displays selectivity for di- over monocarboxylate anions. The complex stability was mainly affected by the anion basicity in the presence of monocarboxylates, whereas the flexibility of the alkyl cha…

Theory of spontaneous polarization and birefringence in the tetragonal phase of KNbO3

1995

Abstract The microscopic mechanism of optical anisotropy in the tetragonal phase of KNbO3 is discussed taking account of the dipole-dipole effect due to the ionic and electronic polarizations of the crystal and the spontaneous Kerr effect. The last effect is a cause of the strong local field acting on the constituent ions. For the spontaneous polarization we use only the first effect. It is found that the birefringence and the spontaneous polarization are in good agreement with the experimental data.

In-depth structural analysis of lanthanoid coordination networks based on a flexible tripodal zwitterionic isonicotinate ligand

2019

Crystallizing metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been studied using a tripodal pyridinecarboxylic acid derivative ligand and selected lanthanoid salts. The zwitterionic ligand, 1,1′,1′′-((2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(methylene))tris(pyridin-1-ium-4-carboxylate) (TTTPC) introduced as a bromide salt, forms coordination networks in aqueous environments and under ambient conditions with neodymium bromide, trifluoromethanesulfonate (OTf) or acetate (OAc). Seven structures are elucidated in detail using single crystal X-ray crystallography. TTTPC NdBr3, TTTPC NdBr2OTf, TTTPC NdBr(OTf)2 and TTTPC Nd(OTf)3 are porous 3D networks with similar ligand–metal and ligand–anion interactions, b…

tert-Butyl-calix[4]arenes Substituted at the Narrow Rim with Cobalt Bis(dicarbollide)(1–) and CMPO Groups – New and Efficient Extractants for Lanthan…

2007

Calix[4]arene derivatives bearing two residues A(–) derived from cobalt bis(dicarbollide)(1–) (1) and two CMPO groups B at their narrow rim were synthesized from tBu-calix[4]arene in four steps. The first step involved the preparation of tBu-calix[4]arene diether derivatives with appropriate precursors for amino groups (mostly nitriles 3). These were O-alkylated through ring-opening reactions with the zwitterionic dioxane derivative [(8-O(CH2CH2)2O-1,2-C2B9H10)-(1′,2′-C2B9H11)-3,3′-Co]0 (10) to produce ionic nitrile derivatives 4. Reduction of the nitrile groups with BH3·SMe2 (or deprotection in the case of the corresponding phthalimido or Boc derivatives 8) led to a series of diamines 5a–f…

Novel structural phases and the properties of LaX (X = P, As) under high pressure: first-principles study

2020

The particle swarm optimization algorithm and density functional theory (DFT) are extensively performed to determine the structures, phase transition, mechanical stability, electronic structures, and thermodynamic properties of lanthanide phosphates (LaP and LaAs) in the pressure range of 0 to 100 GPa. Two novel high-pressure structures of LaP and LaAs are first reported here. It is found that LaX (X = P, As) undergo a phase transition from NaCl-type structure (Fm3m) to CsCl-type structure (P4/mmm) at 19.04 GPa and 17.22 GPa, respectively. With the elevation of the pressure, C2/m-LaP and Imma-LaAs are the most stable structures up to 70.08 GPa and 85.53 GPa, respectively. Finally, the analy…

Selective Lanthanides Sequestration Based on a Self-Assembled Organosilica

2010

International audience; In this paper, we investigate the cation-exchange properties of a self-assembled hybrid material towards trivalent ions, lanthanides (La3+,Eu3+, Gd3+,Yb3+) and Fe3+. The bis-zwitter- ionic lamellar material was prepared by sol-gel process from only 3-amino- propyltriethoxysilane (APTES), succin- ic anhydride, and ethylenediamine. In ethanol heated under reflux, the ex- change ethylenediammonium versus Ln3+ proved to be complete by com- plexometry measurements and elemen- tal analyses, one Cl ion per one LnIII remaining as expected for charge bal- ance. In aqueous solution at 20 8C, the material was found to be selective to- wards lanthanide in spite of the similar- i…

Fast and green: Sustainable rapid-prototyping of microfluidic chips on polylactic acid substrates

2018

This paper reports novel ways to bond bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) substrates for the production of sustainable, single-use, microfluidic components. A laser-based, fast (minutes) fabrication process for multi-layer microfluidic devices in PLA was reported recently but in that report, demonstrator devices were bonded with adhesive tape, which significantly reduced the devices transparency. In this paper, we propose two novel ways to bond PLA substrates, which alleviate the need for adhesives, and enable optimal device transparency.

Molecular dynamics, dynamic site mapping, and highthroughput virtual screening on leptin and the Ob receptor as anti-obesity target.

2014

Body weight control is a mechanism finely regulated by several hormonal, metabolic, and nervous pathways. The leptin receptor (Ob-R) is crucial for energy homeostasis and regulation of food uptake. Leptin is a 16 kDa hormone that is mainly secreted by fat cells into the bloodstream, and under normal circumstances, circulating levels are proportionate to the fat body mass. Sensing of elevated leptin levels by the hypothalamic neurocircutry activates a negative feedback loop resulting in reduced food intake and increased energy expenditure. Decreased concentrations lead to opposite effects. Therefore rational design of leptin agonists constitute an appealing challenge in the battle against ob…
