Mechanisms of Autocrine and Paracrine Growth Control in Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

1990

Blast cells of a high proportion of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) proliferate in response to exogenous hematopoetic growth factors, both in vitro [9, 14, 26, 36, 48, 65] and in vivo [20]. Whereas leukemic colony-forming cells (L-CFCs) from most patients share their growth factor dependence with normal committed myeloid progenitor cells (CFU-GMs), some AML samples autonomously form colonies in agar and are therefore believed to bypass growth factor requirements [17, 42, 72]. Autocrine growth factor production has been identified as one mechanism used by AML blasts to supply various growth-promoting molecules. Moreover nontransformed accessory bone marrow cells have been show…

Diagnosis and Planning in Immediate Loading: Implant Selection

2019

Despite the increasing patients’ desire for immediate prosthetic loading of implants, several factors must be taken into account before pursuing the immediate loading (IL) protocol. In general, the number, size, characterization, and distribution of implants should be based on the implant-prosthodontic plan, arch form, and available bone quality and quantity, regardless of the loading protocol. However, implant selection in IL represents one of the most important clinical challenges due to the primary stability requirement.

Is the Erich arch bar the best intermaxillary fixation method in maxillofacial fractures? : a systematic review

2015

Background Intermaxillary fixation is used to achieve proper occlusion during and after oral and maxillofacial fracture surgery. The aim of this systematic review was to compare Erich arch bar fixation with other intermaxillary fixation methods in terms of the operating time, safety during installation, oral health maintenance and occlusal stability. Material and Methods An electronic online search was conducted of the Scirus, PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane Library and VHL databases. A clinical trial dating from the inception of the data bases until August 2013 was selected. Studies that compared Erich arch bars with other intermaxillary fixation methods in patients older than 18 years-old were inc…

Gigantic peripheral osteoma of the mandible: a case report

2010

Osteomas are osteogenic lesions that have a limited growth potential. They are comprised of histologically and radiographically normal bone. Osteomas are categorized as central, peripheral or extraskeletal according to location. Clinically, peripheral osteomas (PO) are unilateral, sessile or pedunculated and have mushroom-like lesions ranging from 10 to 40 mm in diameter. Osteomas affecting the mandible are rare. In this report, we presented a gigantic peripheral mass on the left mandible in a 55-year old patient exhibiting clinical signs related to neoplasia.

Can specific pre-workout meals reduce bone resorption in young gymnasts?

2021

The pre-adolescence in woman is a key stage to obtain adequate bone mineral content and to decrease the risk of osteoporosis in adulthood. Exercise and adequate nutrition can influence the bone growth process. The aim of this paper was to verify if a different pre-exercise meal can change exercise-induced bone resorption in female child artistic gymnasts. Twenty-eight preadolescent female were requited for this study. Training was preceded by high-carbohydrate meal (HCM; 300 kcal, 88% carbohydrates, 9% protein, 3% fat) or high protein meal (HPM; 300 kcal, 55% carbohydrates, 31% protein, 13% fat) ninety minutes before the start of the training session. Bone resorption biomarker, C-terminal t…

Progressive femoral cortical and cancellous bone density loss after uncemented tapered-design stem fixation

2010

Background Aseptic implant loosening and periprosthetic bone loss are major problems after total hip arthroplasty (THA). We present an in vivo method of computed tomography (CT) assisted osteodensitometry after THA that differentiates between cortical and cancellous bone density (BD) and area around the femoral component.Method Cortical and cancellous periprosthetic femoral BD (mg CaHA/mL), area (mm2) and contact area between the prothesis and cortical bone were determined prospectively in 31 patients 10 days, 1 year, and 6 years after uncemented THA (mean age at implantation: 55 years) using CT-osteodensitometry.Results 6 years postoperatively, cancellous BD had decreased by as much as 41%…

Immediate non-submerged implants with laser-microtextured collar placed in the inter-radicular septum of mandibular molar extraction sockets associat…

2019

Background The aim of the present study was to radiographically evaluate the vertical socket walls changes, and the peri-implant marginal bone remodelling, and clinicallly the soft tissues conditions around the non-submerged single implants placed into the inter radicular septum of mandibular molar sockets, associated with a collagen membrane, after 3 years of loading. Material and Methods Thirty patients underwent to placement of a non-submerged implants with a laser-microtextured collar into the inter radicular septum of mandibular molar fresh extraction sockets. A collagen membrane and the mucoperiosteal flap were adapted around the neck of the implants, leaving the laser-microtextured c…

Influence of nicotine on machined- and anodized-surface implants. Histometric analysis

2017

Background The nicotine may generate a influence on bone repair and longevity of dental implants. This fact makes studies to improve the surface of the implants are constantly conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of subcutaneous nicotine injection in the osseointegration process on different implant surfaces, through histomorphometric analysis. Material and Methods Therefore, twenty-two male rabbits were randomly distributed into two groups according to the subcutaneous injections: (1) nicotine, 3 mg/day/kg and (2) 0.9% NaCI, 3 mL/day/kg, three times a day. Subgroups were then designated - machined and anodized dental implants were installed in the right and left tibia bone…

Internal oblique line implants in severe mandibular atrophies

2020

Background Maxillary atrophy may be related to mechanical, inflammatory or systemic factors, being a consequence of a reduction in the amount and quality of available bone. Several surgical techniques have been developed for the restoration of bone volume needed for placing dental implants; guided bone regeneration or three-dimensional reconstructions with autologous bone, inter alia, are techniques described in the literature which demonstrate this, all of which preceded by a proper prosthetic surgical assessment. Even when the majority of authors recommend the use of these techniques prior to placing implants, it has been shown that implants with a smaller diameter and length may be place…
