Codebook is an effective image representation method. By clustering in local image descriptors, a codebook is shown to be a distinctive image feature and widely applied in object classification. In almost all existing works on codebooks, the building of the visual vocabulary follows a basic routine, that is, extracting local image descriptors and clustering with a user-designated number of clusters. The problem with this routine lies in that building a codebook for each single dataset is not efficient. In order to deal with this problem, we investigate the influence of vocabulary sizes on classification performance and vocabulary universality with the kNN classifier. Experimental results in…

What really causes large price changes?

2003

We study the cause of large fluctuations in prices in the London Stock Exchange. This is done at the microscopic level of individual events, where an event is the placement or cancellation of an order to buy or sell. We show that price fluctuations caused by individual market orders are essentially independent of the volume of orders. Instead, large price fluctuations are driven by liquidity fluctuations, variations in the market's ability to absorb new orders. Even for the most liquid stocks there can be substantial gaps in the order book, corresponding to a block of adjacent price levels containing no quotes. When such a gap exists next to the best price, a new order can remove the best q…

Norwegian Religious Education Workbooks after World War II: Exploring Teachers’ Workbook Constructions by Interpreting Traces of Textbooks and Nation…

2010

Twenty religious education (RE) workbooks covering half a century were examined in a search for RE teachers’ typical patterns of workbook construction. Three chronological main types were distinguished: “the biblical workbook,” “the workbook of Christian cultural nurture,” and “the RE workbook of diversity.” Of greater interest, however, were the particularities found in a few workbooks produced in the two interims between the chronological types. This article discusses—in the light of collective memory theory, social semiotics, and Norwegian RE history—the meaning of the teachers’ implicit contributions to the typical as well as the untypical workbook constructions. The concept of an “irre…

Adolescenti e stile “Young Adult”

2021

"A little deeper into the sea": William Hyde's illustrations to Ford Madox Ford's The Cinque Ports

2021

International audience; The broad aim of this paper is to explore the representation of the sea in its interaction with the coastline of the British Isles. It focuses on Ford Madox Ford [Hueffer]’s The Cinque Ports (Blackwood and Sons, 1900) illustrated by the English artist William Hyde (1857-1925).The original Cinque (i.e. “five”) Ports are located on the English southern coast: Hastings, Sandwich, Dover, Romney and Hythe, to which have been added Rye and Winchelsea. They were granted specific “liberties” by royal charter in the 13th century and they used to provide a line of defence against invasion as well as a point of entry into England. Ford set out to chronicle their history at the …

Orlando, posterity and textual survival beyond the book

2022

This paper’s premise is that certain texts call for adaptation in the sense that they encapsulate anxieties about their posterity and their survival beyond their current material actualization. Orlando’s musings on death and immortality in Virginia Woolf’s eponymous novel are a case in point as they reflect a conflicted longing for the solidity of commemorative monuments and for the immateriality of memory-scapes. Lying “entombed” and “embalmed” in the medium of the book, words also rise “like an incantation” when brought to life by the reader (Orlando, Penguin Classics, 2000, 57). This passage is to be related to the modernist revival of interest in the works of Sir Thomas Browne which not…
