Vertical diversity of bacteria in an oxygen-stratified humic lake, evaluated using DNA and phospholipid analyses

Microbes play a particularly important role in the food web in lakes with high dissolved organic carbon content. The bacterial community of a polyhumic lake, Mekkojarvi, was studied using DNA techniques and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis during the mid-summer period of water column strati- fication. Chemical composition of the essential oil of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae) growing wild in Southern Italy

Abstract The essential oil from aerial parts of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae) was obtained by hydrodistillation. The oil content was 0.15% (v/w), on a dry weight basis. The oil composition was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Altogether 66 compounds were identified accounting for 93.2% of the oil. Sesquiterpenes represent the 23.9% of the oil. In the oil were also present fatty acids (21.8%) and waxes (19.3%). The oil shows no antibacterial activity.

Crystalline wax coverage of the imaginal cuticle inCalopteryx splendens(Odonata: Calopterygidae)

Abstract In this study we use high resolution SEM to describe the diversity of wax crystals and their distribution on different morphological structures in male individuals of Calopteryx splendens. The entire cuticle surface of this damselfly, with the exception of ommatidia and ocelli, is covered with crystalline wax in dimensions from submicron to micron range. It is shown that shape - rod-like, plate like, filamentous, etc. -, size, and density of crystals vary on different surfaces and in individuals of different ages. Steady and oscillatory shear behaviour of semi-concentrated starch suspensions

The viscoelastic moduli G’ and G” of aqueous suspensions with 40% (w/v) normal corn starch (NCS) and waxy corn starch (WCS) were determined by oscillation rheometry. The oscillatory shear flow experiments at heating from 30° to 75 °C and maintaining at this temperature showed changes from a behaviour predominant viscous (G”>>G’) to predominant elastic (G’>G”) for both starches at 60.5 °C for WCS, respectively 70,85 °C for NCS, WCS having higher values of G’ and G” as NCS. After the gelatinisation temperature was attired, NCS showed no significant changes, both moduli remaining relatively constant. The draft genome sequence of strain R46 (approximately 3.72 Mbp) contains 22 scaffolds and 3,619 protein-encoding genes, with a G+C content of 60.8 mol%.

ABSTRACT Pseudomonas mediterranea strain CFBP 5447 T is a phytopathogenic bacterium isolated from tomato plants affected by pith necrosis disease. Moreover, its ability to produce medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs) in culture from different carbon sources and valuable microbial products, such as cyclic lipopeptides, has been well documented. Here, we report the first draft genome sequence of this species.
