Soil solarization with biodegradabile materials and its impact on soil microbial communities.

2008

Soil solarization (SS) seems one of the most promising techniques to control soilborne pathogens, but an important limitation to the diffusion of this technique is due to the drawback regarding the disposal of the used plastic materials. A possible solution to this problem is the use of biodegradable plastics. The aim of this study was compare the impact of SS with biodegradable materials with SS with plastic film and others pest management techniques (i.e. organic matter amendment, calcium cyanamide and Dazomet fungicide application) on crop productivity, soilborne disease incidence, weed suppression, and soil chemical (total N, ammonium, nitrate, available phosphorus, organic matter, hydr…

Isolierung und Charakterisierung eines Dihydroflavonols bei dem Laubmoos Georgia pellucida (L.) Rabh

1977

Summary By means of paper chromatography a dihydroflavonol was isolated from the methanolic extract of the moss Georgia pellucida and partially characterized. It has the chromatographic and spectral characteristics of a 5-deoxydihydroflavonol glycoside with B-ring orthodihydroxyl group.

Potential use of new diphenylurea derivatives in micropropagation of Capparis spinosa L.

2011

A protocol for in vitro multiplication of caper (Capparis spinosa L. subsp. rupestris) from nodal segments collected from mature plants was developed. For shoot multiplication, one auxin (indol-3-butyric acid, IBA) and cytokinins of two different classes were used: the N6-substituted adenine derivatives 6-benzylamino purine (BAP), and the two synthetic phenylurea derivatives N-phenyl-N′-benzothiazol-6-ylurea (PBU) and N-phenyl-N′-(1,2,3-thidiazol-5-yl) urea (thidiazuron, TDZ). Maximum shoot production was achieved from explants cultured with the adeninic cytokinin BAP (4 μM) and the auxin IBA (0.5 μM). New shoots longer than 1 cm were used for rooting. To induce root formation, three auxins…

Localization and Activity of a Carboxypeptidase in Germinating Seeds of Scots Pine, Pinus sylvestris

1976

Extracts prepared from the endosperm of germinating seeds of Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., hydrolysed two typical carboxypeptidase substrates, Z-Phe-Ala and Z-Phe-Phe, with pH optima at 4.2 and 5.0. The activities were completely destroyed by diisopropylfluorophosphate. Identical heat inactivation curves and elution patterns in gel chromatography on Sephadex G-200 suggest that the two activities are due to a single enzyme. In resting seeds very low carboxypeptidase activity was present in both the endosperm and the embryo. During germination on agar gel at 20°C in the dark the activities, expressed as enzyme units per seed, increased in the seedling and particularly in the endosperm up t…

Effect of traditional, microwave and industrial cooking on inositol phosphate content in beans, chickpeas and lentils

2003

An high-performance liquid chromatography method for determining inositol phosphate fractions was adapted to legumes. The validity of the method was assessed by estimating the following analytical parameters: linearity (linear response between 125 and 5000 microg inositol hexaphosphate (IP(6))/ml); instrumental precision and method precision (relative standard deviation, %) were 1.9% (IP(6)) for instrumental, and 2.5% (IP(6)) and 8.2% (IP(5)) for method precision. An accuracy was estimated by percentage recovery (72 +/- 3%). The application of this method to raw, conventional, microwave-cooked and ready-to-eat beans, chickpeas and lentils gave IP(6) contents ranging from 0.63 g/100 g dry ma…

Red : far-red light ratio and UV-B radiation: their effects on leaf phenolics and growth of silver birch seedlings

2004

The natural variation in quantity and quality of light modifies plant morphology, growth rate and concentration of biochemicals. The aim of two growth-room experiments was to study the combined effects of red (R) and far-red (FR) light and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on the concentrations of leaf phenolics and growth and morphology of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) seedlings. Analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography showed that the leaves exposed to supplemental FR relative to R contained higher concentrations of total chlorogenic acids and a cinnamic acid derivative than the leaves treated with supplemental R relative to FR. In contrast, concentration of a flavonoid, querc…

Effect of plant growth regulators and basal media onin vitro shoot proliferation and rooting ofMyrtus communis L.

1996

The influence of macronutrients and growth regulators on in vitro shoot proliferation and rooting of an East Spanish population ofMyrtus communis L. were studied. Preincubation of field material on a medium without mineral salts prevented the browning from phenolic exudates. For multiplication, nodal segments of 5 mm fromin vitro produced shoots were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS), Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) and Heller (H) media (full strength or diluted to 1/2 or 1/4), with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) at concentrations 4.4, 13.3 and 22.2 ΜM or kinetin (K) at concentrations 4.7, 14.0 and 23.2 ΜM. The optimum shoot proliferation was on quarter-strength MS medium with 4.4 ΜM BAP, whereas…

Micropropagation of bay laurel (Daphne gnidiumL.)

1996

SummaryProcedures have been developed for the micropropagation of Daphne gnidium, a shrub species of ecological interest, using explants of juvenile and adult origin. Shoot proliferation rates were significantly affected by both salt formulation and benzylade- nine concentration. Best results were obtained on WP medium with 5 µM BA. The presence of indoleacetic acid in the induction medium improved BA-induced axillary bud proliferation from juvenile explants. Rooting of shoots produced in culture was difficult, especially those of adult origin. Besides an absolute requirement for auxin, calcium concentration and the pH of the medium affected the formation of adventitious roots from regenera…

Water-stable aggregates and organic matter pools in a calcareous vineyard soil under four soil-surface management systems

2006

. Vineyards in Champagne, France are generally situated on slopes where the soils are subject to erosion. Therefore it is important to find a soil-surface management practice that protects the soil against water erosion. We assessed the potential of mulches or grass covers to stabilize soil aggregates in a calcareous sandy loam from a vineyard in Champagne after 9 years under different management systems. Four different treatments were studied: (i) a bluegrass (Poa pratensis) surface cover between the vine rows (GC) with bare soil under the vines (R); two organic mulches of (ii) coniferous (CB) or (iii) poplar (PB) bark that covered the entire soil surface, and (iv) bare soil between the ro…

Relationships between sediment physico-chemical characteristics and heavy metal bioaccumulation in Mediterranean soft-bottom macrophytes

2001

Abstract Concentrations of Hg, Cd, Pb and Zn in the two seagrasses ( Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa ), green alga Caulerpa prolifera and sediment and some physico-chemical characteristics of the sediment (organic matter, fine fraction (particles Significant correlations between the concentrations of metals in the plants and sediment (alone or normalized with respect to the physico-chemical characteristics) were usually found for Hg and Zn. For Pb only C . prolifera fractions were correlated to the Pb content of the sediment. For Cd no significant correlations were obtained between the metal in the plants and sediment. The concentration factors of the metals in the plants with respe…
