Distinguishing Majorana Zero Modes from Impurity States through Time-Resolved Transport
2019
We study time-resolved charge transport in a superconducting nanowire using time-dependent Landauer-B{\"u}ttiker theory. We find that the steady-state Majorana zero-bias conductance peak emerges transiently accompanied by characteristic oscillations after a bias-voltage quench. These oscillations are absent for a trivial impurity state that otherwise shows a very similar steady-state signal as the Majorana zero mode. In addition, we find that Andreev bound states or quasi-Majorana states in the topologically trivial bulk phase can give rise to a zero-bias conductance peak, also retaining the transient properties of the Majorana zero mode. Our results imply that (1) time-resolved transport m…
Coherent coupling between vortex bound states and magnetic impurities in 2D layered superconductors
2021
Bound states in superconductors are expected to exhibit a spatially resolved electron-hole asymmetry which is the hallmark of their quantum nature. This asymmetry manifests as oscillations at the Fermi wavelength, which is usually tiny and thus washed out by thermal broadening or by scattering at defects. Here we demonstrate theoretically and confirm experimentally that, when coupled to magnetic impurities, bound states in a vortex core exhibit an emergent axial electron-hole asymmetry on a much longer scale, set by the coherence length. We study vortices in 2H-NbSe2 and in 2H-NbSe1.8S0.2 with magnetic impurities, characterizing these with detailed Hubbard-corrected density functional calcu…

Thermodynamic and Neutron-Diffraction Studies of H2 and D2 Multilayers Physisorbed on Graphite
1991
The evolution of physisorbed films from two-dimensional (2D) to bulk behavior is a topic of high current interest.1 In this context the behavior of the quantum systems H2, HD and D2 is of particular relevance because of the following reasons: 1. Due to the strong influence of the quantum zero-point energy the hydrogen isotopes are highly compressible. This leads to strongly compressed monolayers2,3 before further layer condensation occurs. This property makes these systems significant for the exploration of conditions of multilayer growth. It is generally believed,1,4–6 that the incompatibility between the adsorbate and bulk lattice structures gives rise to lateral strains between the overl…
Definition and Performance Evaluation of a Robust SVM Based Fall Detection Solution
2012
We propose an automatic approach to detect falls in home environment. A Support Vector Machine based classifier is fed by a set of selected features extracted from human body silhouette tracking. The classifier is followed by filtering operations taking into account the temporal nature of a video. The features are based on height and width of human body bounding box, the user's trajectory with her/his orientation, Projection Histograms and moments of order 0, 1 and 2. We study several combinations of usual transformations of the features (Fourier Transform, Wavelet transform, first and second derivatives), and we show experimentally that it is possible to achieve high performance using a si…
Surface Effects on Block Copolymer Melts Above the Order-Disorder Transition: Linear Theory of Equilibrium Properties and the Kinetics of Surface-Ind…
1997
A phenomenological theory is developed for static and dynamic aspects ofsurface- induced ordering of symmetrical block copolymers taking fluctuation corrections into account, but, considering conditions where the bulk block copolymer melt is still disordered, and a lin- earized version of the resulting Ginzburg-Landau type equation suffices. Both the semi-infinite geometry and symmetrical films of thickness 2L are treated, applying the same boundary con- ditions as used previously for a treatment of wetting in polymer blends, assuming short range surface forces and a long Wavelength approximation. For the static order parameter profile in thin film geometry, We derive an oscillatory converg…
A numerical simulation scheme for the albedo of city street canyons
1985
A numerical scheme is described for the calculation of effective albedo values of long city street canyons. The method is based on a generalization of the radiation model for inclined surfaces recently presented by Bruhl and Zdunkowski (1983). Calculated albedo values are compared with Aida's (1982) experimentally determined results. It is found that experiment and theory are in reasonable and in some cases in excellent agreement. Additional results obtained by varying the geometry of the street canyon as well as the surface reflectivities are shown to demonstrate the versatility of the calculation scheme.
From A Medial Surface To A Mesh
2012
Medial surfaces are well-known and interesting surface skeletons. As such, they can describe the topology and the geometry of a 3D closed object. The link between an object and its medial surface is also intuitively understood by people. We want to exploit such skeletons to use them in applications like shape creation and shape deformation. For this purpose, we need to define medial surfaces as Shape Representation Models (SRMs). One of the very first task of a SRM is to offer a visualization of the shape it describes. However, achieving this with a medial surface remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a method to build a mesh that approximates an object only described by …
On harmonic and biharmonic Bézier surfaces
2004
We present a new method of surface generation from prescribed boundaries based on the elliptic partial differential operators. In particular, we focus on the study of the so-called harmonic and biharmonic Bezier surfaces. The main result we report here is that any biharmonic Bezier surface is fully determined by the boundary control points. We compare the new method, by way of practical examples, with some related methods such as surfaces generation using discretisation masks and functional minimisations.
On the gonality and the slope of a fibered surface
2018
Abstract Let f : X → B be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of curves of genus g ≥ 2 . We obtain a lower bound of the slope λ ( f ) increasing with the gonality of the general fiber of f. In particular, we show that λ ( f ) ≥ 4 provided that f is non-hyperelliptic and g ≥ 16 .
