Correlation between ball milling conditions and planar effects on Cu-nanostructured powders

2002

It is most often proposed that the process of ball milling introduces a variety of defects (vacancies, dislocations, grain boundaries, stacking faults,...) which raise the free energy of the system making it possible to produce metastable phases. But there are very few investigations that deal with the characterization and quantification of the defects produced in milled powders. XRD is really a valuable technique for a characterization in terms of size and morphology of crystallites and imperfections. In this paper, a new line profile analysis method is proposed in order to take into account the dependence of the crystallite size, of the residual strains as well as of the planar defects, o…

Ab initio phase diagram of silver

2021

Silver has been considered as one of the simple one-phase materials that do not exhibit high pressure or high temperature polymorphism. The solid phase of Ag at ambient conditions is face-centered cubic (fcc) one. However, very recently another solid phase of silver, body-centered cubic (bcc) one, was detected in shock-wave (SW) experiments, and a more sophisticated phase diagram of Ag with the two solid phases was published by Smirnov. In this work, using a suite ofab initioquantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations based on the Z methodology which combines both direct Z method for the simulation of melting curves and inverse Z method for the calculation of solid-solid phase boundaries, …

Comment on “Accurate ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling”

2004

In PRB 68, 153101 (2003), Guoping Zhang presented density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results which contradict my DMRG calculations and Hirsch's quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations for the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase boundary in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling. In this Comment I show that Zhang's results are inaccurate and that his criticism of my work is groundless.

Mobility, interdiffusion, and tracer diffusion in lattice-gas models of two-component alloys

1989

The transport properties of lattice-gas models of alloys with two particle species are studied. The numbers of the particles and vacancies are conserved, and the two particle species have different exchange rates with the vacancies. The mobility and interdiffusion is described by the linear Onsager theory of transport. The Onsager coefficients are estimated from numerical simulations of the mobilities. A recently proposed relation between the Onsager coefficients of the random-alloy model is verified. The interdiffusion of the two species is directly monitored in the simulations; it is well described by the estimated Onsager coefficients. The results on interdiffusion are compared with simu…

Temperature-dependent phase transitions in water-oil-surfactant mixtures: Experiment and theory

1996

We investigate temperature induced phase transitions in mixtures of water, oil, and a nonionic surfactant. By microcalorimetric measurements it is shown that the droplet-lamellar transition shows hysteresis so that it is strongly first order. The position of this transition and of the emulsification boundary are quantitatively described by an interfacial model which considers solely the temperature dependence of the spontaneous curvature. There is no fit parameter in the model. Remarkably, the positions of both boundaries do not depend on the bending moduli. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

ChemInform Abstract: Tuning the Defect Configurations in Nematic and Smectic Liquid Crystalline Shells

2013

Thin liquid crystalline shells surrounding and surrounded by aqueous phases can be conveniently produced using a nested capillary microfluidic system, as was first demonstrated by Fernandez-Nieves et al. in 2007. By choosing particular combinations of stabilizers in the internal and external phases, different types of alignment, uniform or hybrid, can be ensured within the shell. Here, we investigate shells in the nematic and smectic phases under varying boundary conditions, focusing in particular on textural transformations during phase transitions, on the interaction between topological defects in the director field and inclusions in the liquid crystal (LC), and on the possibility to relo…

Direct observation of a buckling transition during the formation of thin colloidal crystals

2007

We have investigated a colloidal suspension in a thin wedge formed by two glass plates in the presence of a lateral pressure. Starting with a single hexagonal layer, with increasing separation between the glass plates additional layers are added. This process is accompanied by a number of structural transitions necessary to maintain a high packing fraction under the given boundary conditions. Besides the well-known sequence of hexagonal and quadratic phases, we observe two new phases which are identified with the buckling and the rhombic phase recently predicted by other authors.

A New Colloid Model for Dissipative-Particle-Dynamics Simulations

2016

We propose a new model to simulate spherical colloids. This is a mesoscopic method based on the dissipative particle dynamics. The colloid is represented by a large spherical bead, and its surface interacts with the solvent beads through a pair of dissipative and stochastic forces. This new model extends the tunable-slip boundary condition [Eur. Phys. J. E 26, 115 (2008)] from planar surfaces to curved geometry, thus allows one to study colloids with slippery surfaces. Simulation results show good agreement with the prediction of hydrodynamic theories, indicating the hydrodynamic interactions are properly accounted in our new model.

Spinodal Decomposition Kinetics of Colloid-Polymer Mixtures Including Hydrodynamic Interactions

2012

The phase separation dynamics of a model colloid-polymer mixture is studied by taking explicitly the hydrodynamic interactions caused by the solvent into account. Based on the studies on equilibrium phase behavior we perform a volume quench from the homogeneous region of the phase diagram deep into the region where colloid-rich and polymer-rich phases coexist. We demonstrate that the Multiparticle Collision Dynamics (MPCD) algorithm is well suited to study spinodal decomposition and present first results on the domain growth behavior of colloid-polymer mixtures in quasi two-dimensional confinement. On the one hand side we find that the boundary condition of the solvent with respect to the r…

Heterogeneous nucleation at a wall near a wetting transition: a Monte Carlo test of the classical theory

2009

While for a slightly supersaturated vapor the free energy barrier ΔF(hom)(*), which needs to be overcome in a homogeneous nucleation event, may be extremely large, nucleation is typically much easier at the walls of the container in which the vapor is located. While no nucleation barrier exists if the walls are wet, for incomplete wetting of the walls, described via a nonzero contact angle Θ, classical theory predicts that nucleation happens through sphere-cap-shaped droplets attracted to the wall, and their formation energy is ΔF(het)(*) = ΔF(hom)(*)f(Θ), with f(Θ) = (1-cosΘ)(2)(2+cosΘ)/4. This prediction is tested through simulations for the simple cubic lattice gas model with nearest-nei…
