An equivalent single-layer approach for free vibrations analysis of smart laminated thick composite plates

2012

An equivalent single-layer model for the free vibration analysis of smart laminated plates is presented. The electric and magnetic fields are assumed to be quasi-static and third-order in-plane kinematics is employed to adequately take the shear influence into account when the plate thickness increases. The model governing equations are the plate equations of motion written in terms of mechanical primary variables and effective stiffness coefficients, which take the multifield coupling effects into account. The model shows that the surfaces magneto-electric boundary conditions enter the definitions of the laminate forces and moments resultants. Moreover, it reveals that new stiffness terms,…

Fatigue crack growth through particulate clusters in polycarbonate material

2011

The interaction of a crack with a perfectly bonded inclusion or a cluster of inclusions in polycarbonate matrix was investigated through both numerical simulations and fatigue tests. Stress intensity factors (K(I)) were evaluated by boundary element method for several particle sizes, position and finally for inclusion cluster as a precursor study for the experiments. The numerical simulation has shown the crack tendency to circumvent the inclusions with consequential reduction of the growth rate. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on several particle-filled specimens at constant value of the applied stress intensity factor range (Delta K(Iapp)) highlighting the crack delay due to t…

A Novel Numerical Formulation for Crystal Plasticity

2016

Crystal plasticity plays a crucial role in the mechanics of polycrystalline materials and it is commonly modeled within the framework of the crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM). In this work, an alternative formulation for small strains crystal plasticity is presented. The method is based on a boundary integral formulation for polycrystalline problems and plasticity is addressed using an initial strains approach. Voronoi-type micro-morphologies are considered in the polycrystalline case. A general grain-boundary incremental/iterative algorithm, embedding the flow and hardening rules for crystal plasticity, is developed. The key feature of the method is the expression of the mic…

Computational stability of an initially radial solution of a growth/dissolution problem in a nonradial implementation

1991

We consider a free boundary problem modelling the growth/dissolution of a crystal. The aim is to investigate the following question: Does the solution to the crystal growth problem posed in two dimensions with radially symmetric initial and boundary condition evolve as a radially symmetric solution?

Heterogeneous and homogeneous crystal nucleation in a colloidal model system of charged spheres at low metastabilities

2011

We have studied the nucleation kinetics in the bulk as well as at the container walls of a charged sphere colloidal model system under salt-free conditions close to the fluid–crystal phase boundary. We determined time resolved nucleation rate densities for heterogeneous nucleation on the wall, the corresponding nucleation rate densities for homogeneous nucleation and compare the resulting nucleation barrier heights. The homogeneous barrier height decreases exponentially with increasing metastability, while the heterogeneous barrier displays a sharp transition from a constant value close to the phase boundary to zero at higher metastability. As a consequence the microstructure evolution is d…

On real-time algorithms for the location search of discontinuous conductivities with one measurement

2008

We discuss, and compare, two simple methods that provide coordinates of a point in the vicinity of one inclusion within some object with homogeneous electrical properties. In the context of nondestructive testing such an inclusion may correspond to a material defect, whereas in medicine this may correspond to a lesion in the brain, to name only two possible applications. Both methods use only one pair of voltage/current measurements on the entire boundary of the object to determine a single pair of coordinates that is considered to be close to the center of the inclusion. The first method has been proposed previously by Kwon, Seo and Yoon; the second method, called here the effective dipole…

Characterization of ellipsoids through an overdetermined boundary value problem of Monge–Ampère type

2014

Abstract The study of the optimal constant in an Hessian-type Sobolev inequality leads to a fully nonlinear boundary value problem, overdetermined with non-standard boundary conditions. We show that all the solutions have ellipsoidal symmetry. In the proof we use the maximum principle applied to a suitable auxiliary function in conjunction with an entropy estimate from affine curvature flow.
