On the numerical solution of axisymmetric domain optimization problems by dual finite element method

1994

Shape optimization of an axisymmetric three-dimensional domain with an elliptic boundary value state problem is solved. Since the cost functional is given in terms of the cogradient of the solution, a dual finite element method based on the minimum of complementary energy principle is used. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Mathematical and numerical analysis of initial boundary valueproblem for a linear nonlocal equation

2019

We propose and study a numerical scheme for bounded distributional solutions of the initial boundary value problem for the anomalous diffusion equation ∂t u +Lμu = 0 in a bounded domain supplemented with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Here Lμ is a class of nonlocal operators including fractional Laplacian. ⃝c 2019 InternationalAssociation forMathematics andComputers in Simulation (IMACS). A fast dual boundary element method for 3D anisotropic crack problems

2009

In the present paper a fast solver for dual boundary element analysis of 3D anisotropic crack problems is formulated, implemented and tested. The fast solver is based on the use of hierarchical matrices for the representation of the collocation matrix. The admissible low rank blocks are computed by adaptive cross approximation (ACA). The performance of ACA against the accuracy of the adopted computational scheme for the evaluation of the anisotropic kernels is investigated, focusing on the balance between the kernel representation accuracy and the accuracy required for ACA. The system solution is computed by a preconditioned GMRES and the preconditioner is built exploiting the hierarchical …

Mesoscopic aspects of the computational homogenization with meshless modeling for masonry material

2020

The multiscale homogenization scheme is becoming a diffused tool for the analysis of heterogeneous materials as masonry since it allows dealing with the complexity of formulating closed-form constitutive laws by retrieving the material response from the solution of a unit cell (UC) boundary value problem (BVP). The robustness of multiscale simulations depends on the robustness of the nested macroscopic and mesoscopic models. In this study, specific attention is paid to the meshless solution of the UC BVP under plane stress conditions, comparing performances related to the application of linear displacement or periodic boundary conditions (BCs). The effect of the geometry of the UC is also i…

Active macro-zone approach for incremental elastoplastic-contact analysis

2013

SUMMARY The symmetric boundary element method, based on the Galerkin hypotheses, has found an application in the nonlinear analysis of plasticity and in contact-detachment problems, but both dealt with separately. In this paper, we want to treat these complex phenomena together as a linear complementarity problem. A mixed variable multidomain approach is utilized in which the substructures are distinguished into macroelements, where elastic behavior is assumed, and bem-elements, where it is possible that plastic strains may occur. Elasticity equations are written for all the substructures, and regularity conditions in weighted (weak) form on the boundary sides and in the nodes (strong) betw…

Implicit analytic solutions for a nonlinear fractional partial differential beam equation

2020

Abstract Analytic solutions in implicit form are derived for a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) with fractional derivative elements, which can model the dynamics of a deterministically excited Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a viscoelastic foundation. Specifically, the initial-boundary value problem for the corresponding PDE is reduced to an initial value problem for a nonlinear ordinary differential equation in a Hilbert space. Next, by employing the cosine and sine families of operators, a variation of parameters representation of the solution map is introduced. Due to the presence of a nonlinear term, a local fixed point theorem is employed to prove the local existence and u…

Fictitious Domain Methods for the Numerical Solution of Two-Dimensional Scattering Problems

1998

Fictitious domain methods for the numerical solution of two-dimensional scattering problems are considered. The original exterior boundary value problem is approximated by truncating the unbounded domain and by imposing a nonreflecting boundary condition on the artificial boundary. First-order, second-order, and exact nonreflecting boundary conditions are tested on rectangular and circular boundaries. The finite element discretizations of the corresponding approximate boundary value problems are performed using locally fitted meshes, and the discrete equations are solved with fictitious domain methods. A special finite element method using nonmatching meshes is considered. This method uses …

Implementation Aspects of 3D Lattice-BGK: Boundaries, Accuracy, and a New Fast Relaxation Method

1999

In many realistic fluid-dynamical simulations the specification of the boundary conditions, the error sources, and the number of time steps to reach a steady state are important practical considerations. In this paper we study these issues in the case of the lattice-BGK model. The objective is to present a comprehensive overview of some pitfalls and shortcomings of the lattice-BGK method and to introduce some new ideas useful in practical simulations. We begin with an evaluation of the widely used bounce-back boundary condition in staircase geometries by simulating flow in an inclined tube. It is shown that the bounce-back scheme is first-order accurate in space when the location of the non…

An asymptotic holomorphic boundary problem on arbitrary open sets in Riemann surfaces

2020

Abstract We show that if U is an arbitrary open subset of a Riemann surface and φ an arbitrary continuous function on the boundary ∂ U , then there exists a holomorphic function φ ˜ on U such that, for every p ∈ ∂ U , φ ˜ ( x ) → φ ( p ) , as x → p outside a set of density 0 at p relative to U . These “solutions to a boundary problem” are not unique. In fact they can be required to have interpolating properties and also to assume all complex values near every boundary point. Our result is new even for the unit disc.
