The grain market, short-term credit, and economic inequality in the Kingdom of Valencia. The towns of Cocentaina, and Castellón in the Fifteenth-Cent…

2018

Despite the predominance of small peasant farms in the Valencian countryside in the Late Middle Ages, large sections of the peasantry were forced to turn to the market to obtain cereals for consumption and sowing. Insufficient land and lack of liquidity caused by the seasonal cycle of crops made it necessary to use short-term credit, which was recorded in the court of local justice in the legal form of “obligacions”. The aim of this paper is to analyse the economic role of this credit market, identifying varieties of commercialised cereals, seasonality of purchases and payments, price trends and the socio-professional background of buyers (debtors) and sellers (creditors). Thus, we study ho…

This article maintains that Wittgenstein can be seen as a sick soul in the terms of William James" The Varieties of the Religious Experience. It also holds that from the reading of this book Wittgenstein adopted a religious ideal that explains some aspects of his biography, his hostility to bourgeois civilization and the…

Promoting Social and Political Change Through Pedagogy: Lorenzo Milani and the Barbiana School (Italy 1954–1967)

2015

This chapter describes the curriculum and pedagogy implemented at Barbiana, a small school in a remote and mountainous place in Italy. Still revered in Europe as one of the most interesting innovative teaching experiences, the school started in 1954 when Lorenzo Milani, a Catholic priest committed to work with the poor who had run an afterschool program in a working-class parish in an industrial city close to Florence, was sent to this location because of his leftist views. Milani believed that schools were class-based institutions that benefited bourgeois children and that excluded working-class and farmworker students. To reverse this situation, Milani contended that education for these s…

Between the Darkness of Barbarism and the Light of Civilization: British Images of the Finn in the Late Eighteenth Century

2014

This article aims to show that it was the British travellers (Coxe, Tooke, Clarke,et al.) to Finland in the late eighteenth century who discovered Finland for theBritish reading public. As they distinguished the Finns as a separate ‘race’ fromthe Russians, the Swedes, and the Lapps, they contributed to the proto-racialistimage of them that would become popular in the nineteenth century. BecauseSweden had become an important maritime trading partner (in iron ore, tar, andtimber) to the British, its eastern part, Finland, also became an interesting countryto visit en route from Stockholm to Saint Petersburg (or from Saint Petersburgto Stockholm). The travellers were astonished to realize that…

A Reluctant Hero: Hannes Kolehmainen and the Politics of Sporting Fame in Finland

2012

A multiple Olympic champion and pioneer of long-distance running in Finland, Hannes Kolehmainen migrated to the United States after having triumphed at the 1912 Stockholm games. In spite of his working-class credentials that had led to tension prior to Stockhom, the Finnish bourgeois sport authorities adopted him as their hero and literally bought him back from America in the 1920s, soon after Finland had gained independence. Subsequently, a number of prominent observers and scholars have claimed that Kolehmainen's running prowess not only brought the Finnish people together but also contributed to Finland's quest for independence. This essay takes a critical look at the hegemonic understan…

2001

One of the basic elements which the bourgeoisie needed to address in the process of revolution was the transformation of the landholding regime and the instruments which conditioned the social relations of production: seigneurial, and principally jurisdictional, rights. This meant two tasks: overcoming the juridical structure that underlay the feudal property regime and the creation of a new system that might regulate relationships of capitalist production. Peculiarities and doubts about the origin of the feudal property regime and seigneurial rights, and the relationship between the two, would open up a series of questions relating to their legality and legitimacy, including the right of c…

Bourgeois Women and the Question of Divorce in Finland in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries

2017

This article explores perceptions and actions of Finnish upper-middle-class women with regard to divorce in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Divorce was discussed in the periodicals of bourgeois women’s associations and later in Finnish Parliament, in which several leading figures of the bourgeois women’s associations were elected as members from 1907 onwards. Compared to other issues related to marriage and its legislation, divorce was not an especially important question for bourgeois women, but a tool to promote other issues. Women writers demanded drunkenness and violence as new grounds for divorce, and proposed that loveless marriages should be made possible to dissolve. M…
