Arthus type inflammation with rat immunoglobulins.

1971

Epithelium modulates the reactivity of sensitized guinea-pig trachea: influence of the surface of drug entry.

1991

Abstract A technique by which drug access was restricted to either the mucosal or the adventitial surface of tracheal rings isolated from sensitized guinea-pigs was applied to study the role of the epithelium in modulating responses to KCl, acetylcholine, histamine and antigen (bovine serum albumin, BSA). Epithelium removal did not alter the responsiveness or sensitivity of tracheal rings to KCl. In contrast, a leftward shift occurred for concentration-response curves to acetylcholine (concentration ratio (CR) = 4·1), histamine (CR = 2·9) and BSA (CR = 33·9) entering from the mucosal surface of de-epithelialized trachea. This shift was not associated with changes in the maximal effect of th…

The safety, reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (7VPnC) concurrently administered with a combination DTaP-…

2003

To evaluate immune responses, safety and reactogenicity of the concomitant use of DTaP-IPV-Hib and the newly available 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate (7VPnC) vaccines when given as the primary immunization series in early infancy. A total of 231 healthy infants were enrolled at 11 German study centers and randomized to receive either 7VPnC plus DTaP-IPV-Hib vaccines concomitantly into opposite limbs at age 2, 3, 4 and 11-15 months (7VPnC group) or DTaP-IPV-Hib vaccine at the same ages plus a 7VPnC "catch-up vaccination" at ages 6, 7, 8 and 11-15 months (Control group). Blood samples were drawn before and 4 weeks after the first three vaccine doses and 4 weeks after the fourth dose. Local a…

Induction of the fatty acid transport protein 1 and acyl-CoA synthase genes by dimer-selective rexinoids suggests that the peroxisome proliferator-ac…

2000

The intracellular fatty acid content of insulin-sensitive target tissues determines in part their insulin sensitivity. Uptake of fatty acids into cells is a controlled process determined in part by a regulated import/export system that is controlled at least by two key groups of proteins, i.e. the fatty acid transport protein (FATP) and acyl-CoA synthetase (ACS), which facilitate, respectively, the transport of fatty acids across the cell membrane and catalyze their esterification to prevent their efflux. Previously it was shown that the expression of the FATP-1 and ACS genes was controlled by insulin and by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists in liver or in adipose t…

Development and validation of a radioimmunoassay for serum melatonin.

1989

A radioimmunoassay using N-[3-(4-hydroxy-3-[4-hydroxy-3- [125I]iodophenylpropionyl)]-5-methoxytryptamine as tracer for determination of melatonin in the serum of different species is described. Melatonin antisera were raised in rabbits by immunization with a bovine serum albumin conjugate of N-[3-(2-aminoethyl)-5-methoxy indole] hemisuccinamide. A single high affinity, specific antiserum was obtained. In contrast to previous studies, the tracer was synthesised in one step in the absence of water, giving an excellent yield of highly pure product. No chromatographic purification step was needed. Polyethylene glycol in combination with goat antirabbit immunoglobulins was used to separate bound…

Spatial analysis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Galicia, Spain (2000–2005)

2007

Abstract In Spain, the first bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case was detected in 2000 in a cow born in the Galicia region (Northwestern Spain). From then and until October 2005, 590 cases were detected, 223 of them in Galicia. In 1994, meat and bone meal (MBM) was banned on ruminant feed and, in 1996, an EU decision mandating an overall change in MBM processing was implemented. This decision was gradually applied in the territory and not enforced before July 1998. The objective of this study was to explore clustering of BSE cases and estimate the standard incidence ratio (SIR) of BSE in Galicia. Our study was based on the BSE cases detected during the surveillance period 2000–2005 i…

Long-term outcome of dental implants after maxillary augmentation with and without bone grafting

2016

Background: This study aims to evaluate the technique of sinus bone reformation, which consists of elevating the sinus membrane and placement the implant without bone graft, compared with the widely-used technique involving raising the maxillary sinus and grafting, using animal hydroxyapatite as the filler, while simultaneously fixing the implants. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective study on two groups of patients who underwent elevation of the sinus membrane and simultaneous placement of the implant. The grafting technique was applied to one group, while the other had no graft. An alveolar ridge height of 4 to 7 mm was necessary. Radiological control was undertaken at 6 months a…

Contact sensitizers modulate mechanisms of receptor-mediated endocytosis but not fluid-phase endocytosis in murine epidermal Langerhans cells.

1995

In order to define the influence of contact allergens on the fluid-phase endocytosis (FPE) of soluble molecules of murine epidermal Langerhans cells (LC), we studied the internalization of FITC-labeled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA), TRITC-labeled dextrane (TRITC-DEX) as well as horseradish peroxidase by LC. A 3-parameter flow-cytometric technique was performed for quantification of internalized FITC-BSA in LC using quantum red-labeled reagents for detection of la-antigen expression by LC and propidium iodide for exclusion of dead cells from analysis. A temperature-dependent rapid accumulation of FITC-BSA was noticed in time-course studies reaching a plateau between 1 and 2 h of in vitro c…

Effects of alkylxanthines on contractility of diaphragm fibres isolated from normal and sensitized guinea-pigs.

1993

Abstract This study investigates the effects of alkylxanthines on twitch tension generated by electrical stimulation (supramaximal pulses, 0·2 ms duration, 1 Hz) of diaphragm muscle fibres isolated from normal and actively-sensitized guinea-pigs. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine increased, in a concentration-dependent manner (50–500 μm), twitch tension in normal and sensitized diaphragm. Caffeine (500 μm) enhanced contractility to a greater extent than theophylline or theobromine. Twitch potentiation by caffeine (500 μm) was significantly greater in sensitized diaphragm. Verapamil (0·1–100 μm) did not alter twitch contractions in the absence or presence of alkylxanthines in normal or …
