OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively reviewed the institutional experience in patients who underwent microsurgical resection of cavernous malformations (CMs) or arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) using a multimodal intraoperative protocol including neuronavigation, intraoperative ultrasound (i-US), computed tomography (i-CT), and neuromonitoring.METHODS: Twenty-four patients (14 male), with a mean age of 47.5 years (range 27 - 73), have been included: 20 of them suffered from CMs and 4 suffered from AVMs.Neuromonitoring was used in 18 cases, when lesions were located in eloquent areas; 2 patients underwent awake craniotomy. The incidence of a significant hemorrhage in the natural history of cavernomas is below 1% per year, but the risk of a second hemorrhage in patients with initial bleeding cavernomas is between 14% and 29%. In the light of these figures, all cavernomas ought to be resected if surgical-related morbidity can be minimized. Stereotactically guided neurosurgery offers the advantage of planning the least traumatic approach before craniotomy due to the knowledge of the exact localisation of the lesion. Abstract Purpose Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a potential complication of cirrhosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may demonstrate hyperintense T1 signal in the globi pallidi. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of MRI-based radiomic features for diagnosing and grading chronic HE in adult patients affected by cirrhosis. Assessing inter- and intra-individual cognitive variability in patients at risk for cognitive impairment: the case of minimal hepatic encephalopathy

Recent evidence reveals that inter- and intra-individual variability significantly affects cognitive performance in a number of neuropsychological pathologies. We applied a flexible family of statistical models to elucidate the contribution of inter- and intra-individual variables on cognitive functioning in healthy volunteers and patients at risk for hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Bilateral cystic pulmonary glial heterotopia and palatinal teratoma causing respiratory distress in an infant

We report on a male infant with extensive, bilateral cystic and solid lung lesions who presented postnatally with respiratory distress caused by bilateral cystic lung lesions. Parenchyma-sparing resections were performed. Histology revealed the presence of neuroglial cell-lined cysts and glial nodules. In addition, a neural element containing palatinal teratoma was detected and excised. Based on previously published cases, the pathogenesis and clinical features of pulmonary neuroglial heterotopia are discussed.

Meningiomas are the most frequent primary brain tumor. Usually, they are curable by surgery, but even after seemingly complete resection, some low-grade lesions recur. Despite recent improvements, signatures having prognostic value in grade I tumors remain poorly characterized. The frequency and delicate location of these tumors suggest that the risk of recurrence might be more accurately predicted.
