The coffee-house: Upcycling spent coffee grounds for the production of green geopolymeric architectural energy-saving products

2023

This study investigates a possible alternative reuse of spent coffee grounds (SCG), the major residue of the brewing process, to manufacture green geopolymeric materials for innovative building applications in energy-saving construction, in line with the European Green Deal towards zero-energy building. Specimens were prepared by a combination of biomass fly ash from the Kraft paper-pulp process, as raw material (70 wt%), and SCG (up to 17.5 %), as filler. The high amount of reused bio-wastes makes the material fit the requirements for the Minimum Environmental Criteria (MEC) certification, in light of the Circular Economy (CE) approach. Sustainability is also boosted by the manufacturing p…

Fontaines (Saône-et-Loire). Place de l’Église [notice archéologique]

2019

Consolidation of earthen building materials: a comparative study

2019

The consolidation and protection of mud bricks are a challenge in the field of conservation of archeological sites. One of the solutions is represented by the coverage of the entire excavation that assures a protection against mud dissolution. Unfortunately, this is not always feasible, both for economical and practical issues. For these reasons, alternative solutions are needed. In this work, laboratory experimentation has been carried out in order to test the efficacy of some products to slow down the dissolution process and increase the brick toughness. Three typologies of raw materials taken from different outcrops (one from the Republic of Azerbaijan and two from Calabria region, Italy…

Advanced Strategies and Materials for Reinforcing Normal and Disturbed Regions in Brick Masonry Columns

2016

This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behavior of 42 solid clay brick masonry columns internally strengthened by fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) fabrics or stainless steel grids placed in horizontal mortar joints. In some cases, every course, and in other cases, alternate courses were reinforced with steel grids, carbon, and basalt FRP fabrics. Monotonic compressive loading tests were carried out under concentric and eccentric loads. Eccentric tests were carried out by loading the specimens on a reduced area with respect to the entire cross section, producing a disturbed region (D-region). A detailed characterization of the constituent materials was made expe…

Analysis of local shear effects in brick masonry infilled RC frames

2013

Masonry infills panels placed among framed structures meshes have a relevant influence in presence seismic actions in terms of strength stiffness and global displacement capacity. In the case of RC structures, the modifications of internal forces due to infill-frame interaction may be not compatible with surrounding frame members strength especially considering additional shear forces arising at the ends of beams and columns in contact with the panel under lateral actions. Such effects may be in many cases the cause of unexpected brittle collapse mechanisms which compromise the safety of the entire structure. In this paper by means of a double (micromodeling and macromodeling) procedure reg…

Historical mortar: luminescence from fine grain quartz

2010

Within the framework of a research programme aimed at the chronological reconstruction of the structures belonging to the architectonic complex of San Francesco alla Collina of Paternò (Catania, Italy), a procedure was carried out using thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, respectively on terracotta bricks and mortar from the same sampling points. The primary methodological aim was to extend the application of luminescence dating techniques to mortar from historical buildings. Because the TL dating method dates the last firing of bricks, it offers a terminus post quem: the results give the period in which they were manufactured. The possibility that th…

Historical building dating: refinement of established sample preparation protocol

2010

Abstract: The application of thermal (TL) and optical (OSL) stimulated luminescence on pottery and building materials has allowed to resolve numer-ous problems in both the fields of retrospective do-simetry and dating. Routine measurements request the registration of TL signals obtained on polymineral fine-grained frac-tion (FG) extracted from pottery sherds and bricks used as building material with the Added Dose (AD) technique. One of the reasons of the dispersion of the lumi-nescence measurements when using this fraction is the variability of relative contents of quartz and feld-spars, which due to their differing behaviour influ-encing the equivalent dose (ED) and therefore its uncertai…
