Quantitative Characteristics of Information Society and ICT Industry in Latvia

Abstract The article is devoted to statistical analysis of information and communication technology (ICT) industry in Latvia and the development of Information Society in the country. On the basis of statistical data comparison of Latvia with other European countries is made. This comparison shows that Latvia belongs to countries with very well developed Internet. On the other hand the statistical data points on the fact that it is necessary to increase the awareness of population regarding possibilities offered by using of ICT and e-Government.
Does strategy matter? A comparison of broadband rollout policies in Finland and Sweden

This study investigates broadband policies applied in Finland and Sweden with special reference to the geographical coverage of the required network infrastructure. These two Nordic countries are seen as forerunners in the development of the information society, and they also share several other similarities bearing relevance to the take-up of broadband. However, they have applied different broadband strategies: Sweden, one of the first-movers in this field, already launched its ambitious and interventionist national ICT infrastructure program in 2000, whereas the Finnish broadband strategy, published in 2003, largely relies on market forces. Mobile Wireless Interfaces: In Search for the Limits

With the proliferation of 2G and 3G Telecom and other wireless networks hundred of millions of users will be able to access wireless services with their terminals in only a few years. In this paper we discuss the possibilities and limitations of existing and emerging mobile technologies and methodologies for porting information and functionality from traditional PCs to mobile devices and vice versa. We argue that in order to be able to properly port things between devices an equivalence concept for user interfaces is required.
A low-cost compact uniplanar Quasi–Yagi printed antenna

A low cost directive uniplanar broadband printed Quasi–Yagi antenna design is presented. As a particular realization, some prototypes have been designed to operate in the 2.45 GHz band. They have been then modeled, fabricated onto standard printed circuit dielectric substrate and tested successfully. For the design and the modeling processes, we have make use of FDTD based in-house developed algorithms. The obtained bandwidth is, for all the considered cases, better than 15%. The main radiation characteristics are 2–5.5 dBi gain, depending on the number of director elements, and better than 25 dB front-to-back ratio. Design of Yagi-like printed antennas for WLAN applications

A directive broadband printed Yagi-like antenna design is presented. We have focused on the 2.45 GHz WLAN band, at which some designs have been carried out. For the design and the modelling processes, we made use of FDTD based in-house developed algorithms. Some selected prototypes have then been fabricated onto a low-cost printed circuit board dielectric substrate and tested successfully. Bandwidths higher than 10% and moderate to high (>7 dBi) gains can be obtained this way. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Scheduling solution for the IEEE 802.16 base station

The IEEE 802.16 standard defines a wireless broadband access network technology called WiMAX. It introduces several advantages, one of which is the support for QoS at the MAC level. To ensure meeting the QoS requirements, the 802.16 base station must run some algorithm to allocate slots between connections. This algorithm is not defined in the 802.16 specification but rather is open for alternative implementations. Analysis of duplexing modes in the IEEE 802.16 wireless system

The IEEE 802.16 standard defines two main duplexing modes: Time Division Duplexing (TDD) and Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD). The FDD can be divided further into Full-FDD (F-FDD) and Half-FDD (H-FDD). F-FDD requires full duplexing support from subscriber stations and works with two frequency bands. TDD operates a single frequency band, but it does not need full-duplexing support. H-FDD is a combination of these: it works with two frequency bands and does not require full-duplexing support. Impact of portable device restrictions on IEEE 802.16 performance

IEEE 802.16 is a good alternative for fast wireless connection in the next generation portable information devices (PID). However it was not originally designed for portable devices, but mobility was added later to the specification. This means that the lack of resources on portable devices might have a significant impact on which IEEE 802.16 features should be chosen and how they should be used. Proper usage of ARQ can increase the IEEE 802.16 performance but it can also require much resources from PIDs. In this paper we focus on how ARQ features are affected by limited resources on PID and how much the limitations affect on the performance.
Pattern Identification by Factor Analysis for Regions with Similar Economic Activity Based on Mobile Communication Data

The study analyses the regions’ economic activity in Latvia using Latvia Mobile Telephone (LMT) mobile communication data from July 2015 to January 2017. The call activity and a number of unique phone users by 119 Latvia counties and biggest cities were analysed in two steps: at first method of principal components was used to explain the variance in the data and then exploratory factor analysis was applied. Three factors were identified that describe 87.5% of the total variance of the aggregated daily data.
