Introduction to Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD) Minitrack: Contributing to Human Development and Social Justice

2015

This minitrack explores opportunities to use Information and communication technologies to promote human development and social justice. In the early days this field began with radio and television as tools to help improve the lives of marginalized communities, but this has now become a global movement of people using computers, the internet, and mobile devices to help human development. Information technologies have become more accessible, more used, and more relevant than ever in the lives of people around the world. A growing body of scholars and researchers work to understand, design, evaluate and critique ICTD interventions, which can bring numerous benefits as well as unanticipated ne…

Modulating the polarization of broadband terahertz pulses from a spintronic emitter at rates up to 10 kHz

2021

Reliable modulation of terahertz electromagnetic waveforms is important for many applications. Here, we rapidly modulate the direction of the electric field of linearly polarized terahertz electromagnetic pulses with 1–30 THz bandwidth by applying time-dependent magnetic fields to a spintronic terahertz emitter. Polarity modulation of the terahertz field with more than 99% contrast at a rate of 10 kHz is achieved using a harmonic magnetic field. By adding a static magnetic field, we modulate the direction of the terahertz field between angles of, for instance, −53° and 53° at kilohertz rates. We believe our approach makes spintronic terahertz emitters a promising source for low-noise modula…

Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy of PSN-Rich PMN-PSN Ceramics

2008

The broadband dielectric permittivity of ordered 0.1PMN-0.9PSN and disordered 0.2PMN-0.8PSN ceramics was investigated. The anomaly of dielectric permittivity is clearly seen in the region of 370 K for 0.1 PMN-0.9 PSN at all frequencies. 0.2 PMN-0.8 PSN shows relaxor behaviour with huge frequency dispersion below 350 K. Calculated distribution of relaxation times shows noticeable influence of polar nano regions to the total dielectric spectrum below 320 K with the longest relaxation times edge diverging according to the Vogel-Fulcher law. In 0.1 PMN-0.9 PSN two a little overlapped peaks present in the distribution of relaxation times, influenced by displacive lead motions at high frequencies…

Broad Distribution of Relaxation Times in 0.6PMN-0.4PZN Relaxor Ceramics

2007

In this paper dielectric spectra of 0.6PMN-0.4PZN ceramic obtained from broadband dielectric spectroscopy is presented. Measurements revealed an unusual relaxor like nature. Two different processes in the dielectric spectra have been observed. High frequency, or short relaxation times, behaviour is typical for ferroelectric crystals. Longest relaxation times do not follow Vogel—Fulcher dependence, which is unusual for relaxors.

Ultra-broad spectral photo-response in FePS3 air-stable devices

2021

Van der Waals materials with narrow energy gaps and efficient response over a broadband optical spectral range are key to widen the energy window of nanoscale optoelectronic devices. Here, we characterize FePS as an appealing narrow-gap p-type semiconductor with an efficient broadband photo-response, a high refractive index, and a remarkable resilience against air and light exposure. To enable fast prototyping, we provide a straightforward guideline to determine the thickness of few-layered FePS nanosheets extracted from the optical transmission characteristics of several flakes. The analysis of the electrical photo-response of FePS devices as a function of the excitation energy confirms a …

Accurate color predictability based on a spectral retardance model of a twisted-nematic liquid-crystal display

2011

Abstract In this work we present the application of a simple physical model to accurately predict the broadband spectral transmittance and colorimetric properties of a twisted-nematic liquid crystal display (TNLCD). We spectroscopically calibrate the retardance parameters to evaluate the spectrum of the light transmitted by a TNLCD sandwiched between two linear polarizers. When the TNLCD is illuminated with a broadband light source, the full spectrum can be predicted as a function of the addressed gray level for any arbitrary orientation of the polarizers. Thus, the color of the transmitted light can be also be estimated with very good accuracy. As an example, a polarizers' configuration is…

Programmable Supercontinuum Laser Spectrum Generator Based on a Liquid-Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulator

2021

Supercontinuum (SC) lasers combine a broadband light spectrum with the unique properties of single-mode lasers. In this work we present an optical system to spectrally filter a SC laser source using liquid-crystal on silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulators (SLM). The proposed optical system disperses the input laser and the spectrally separated components are projected onto the LCoS-SLM, where the state of polarization of each wavelength is separately modulated. Finally, recombining the modulated spectral components results in an output laser source where the spectrum can be controlled dynamically from a computer. The system incorporates two branches to independently control the visible (VI…
