An evaluation of exposure metrics in an epidemiologic study on radio and television broadcast transmitters and the risk of childhood leukemia.

2009

Electric field strength values calculated by wave propagation modeling were applied as an exposure metric in a case–control study conducted in Germany to investigate a possible association between radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) emitted from television and radio broadcast transmitters and the risk of childhood leukemia. To validate this approach it was examined at 850 measurement sites whether calculated RF-EMF are an improvement to an exposure proxy based on distance from the place of residence to a transmitter. Further, the agreement between measured and calculated RF-EMF was explored. For dichotomization at the 90% quantiles of the exposure distributions it was found that…

El discurso pseudopolítico de la segunda pantalla. #ElDebateEnRTVE visto a través de sus prosumers

2020

Introduction: Our object of analysis is the conversation held on Twitter in one of the election debates in the campaign in the Spanish General Elections of April 28th, 2019; precisely, the one that took place on April 22 on the public broadcasting corporation Radiotelevision Espanola among the leaders of the four main political parties: the ruling Socialists, the conservative People’s Party (PP), the centre-right Ciudadanos and the left-wing Unidas-Podemos. Methodology: The methodology used in the work is the Pragmatic Discourse Analysis, and quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques are used. The data was coded and analyzed with Atlas.ti software. For the analysis, a total of 1000 t…

A discussion of potential exposure metrics for use in epidemiological studies on human exposure to radiowaves from mobile phone base stations

2000

There is currently a high level of concern in many countries that exposure to radiowaves from mobile phone base stations may be hazardous to health. When investigating such suggested risks, epidemiologists need to define an exposure metric that can reliably discriminate between exposed and unexposed groups of people. We conducted a feasibility study to investigate if either short-term measurements of electric field strength, calculations of electric field strength, or distance from nearby mobile phone base stations could be used to develop a metric reflecting an individual's exposure to radiowaves. With electric field strengths in the range of 0.012-0.343 V/m, radiowaves from mobile phone b…

Objective features in quantum states

2023

One of the key features of quantum mechanics is that any superposition of quantum states is in itself a legitimate quantum state. This has far reaching consequences, and is behind the stark difference in behaviour between quantum and classical systems. In particular, quantum systems are not -unlike classical ones- intrinsically objective, that is, different observers are not always able to agree on the properties of the system. Understanding the conditions for objectivity in quantum states is therefore key to address the wider issue of the quantum-to-classical transition. Here, we discuss several aspects of quantum objectivity, and in particular subtleties that arise to the definitions of o…

A Fast Anchor Person Searching Scheme in News Sequences

2001

In this paper we address the problem of seeking anchor person shots in news sequences. This can be useful since usually this kind of scenes contain important and reusable information such as interviews. The proposed technique is based on our a priori knowledge of the editing techniques used in news sequences.

A Multichannel Information System to Build and Deliver Rich User-Experiences in Exhibits and Museums

2011

In this article a multichannel information system to build and deliver rich user experiences in exhibits and museums is presented. The system was designed to use information about a particular exhibit or museum while delivering a wide user experience based on different distribution channels. The overall information is used to build different solutions that can be delivered simultaneously on different media from touch-screen installations to portable devices like smart phones. Moreover, all the devices signed in the environment are able to communicate to each others to increase the level of the usability of the system. A case study and analysis of experimental results are also provided.

Network-Assisted Resource Allocation with Quality and Conflict Constraints for V2V Communications

2018

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has recently established in Rel. 14 a network-assisted resource allocation scheme for vehicular broadcast communications. Such novel paradigm is known as vehicle--to--vehicle (V2V) \textit{mode-3} and consists in eNodeBs engaging only in the distribution of sidelink subchannels among vehicles in coverage. Thereupon, without further intervention of the former, vehicles will broadcast their respective signals directly to their counterparts. Because the allotment of subchannels takes place intermittently to reduce signaling, it must primarily be conflict-free in order not to jeopardize the reception of signals. We have identified four pivotal types…

Impact of centrality on cooperative processes

2016

The solution of today's complex problems requires the grouping of task forces whose members are usually connected remotely over long physical distances and different time zones. Hence, understanding the effects of imposed communication patterns (i.e., who can communicate with whom) on group performance is important. Here, we use an agent-based model to explore the influence of the betweenness centrality of the nodes on the time the group requires to find the global maxima of NK-fitness landscapes. The agents cooperate by broadcasting messages, informing on their fitness to their neighbors, and use this information to copy the more successful agents in their neighborhood. We find that for ea…
