Halogen Bonds in Square Planar 2,5-Dihalopyridine-Copper(II) Bromide Complexes

2018

Halogen bonding in self-complementary 1:2 metal–ligand complexes obtained from copper(II) bromide (CuBr2) and seven 2,5-dihalopyridines were analyzed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All presented discrete complexes form 1D polymeric chains connected with C–X···Br–Cu halogen bonds (XB). In (2-chloro-5-X-pyridine)2·CuBr2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) only the C5-halogen and in (2-bromo-5-X-pyridine)2·CuBr2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) both C2- and C5-halogens form C–X···Br–Cu halogen bonds with the X acting as the XB donor and copper-coordinated bromide as the XB acceptor. The electron-withdrawing C2-chloride in (2-chloro-5-X-pyridine)2·CuBr2 complexes has only a minor effect on the C5–X5···Br–Cu XBs, a…

Dicationic organic salts: gelators for ionic liquids

2014

Diimidazolium and dipyrrolidinium organic salts were tested for their ability to gel both organic solvents and ionic liquids. Organic salts containing 1-(1-imidazolylmethyl)-3,5-di-(3'-octylimidazolylmethyl)-benzene and 1-(N-pyrrolidylmethyl)-3,5-di-(N,N-octylpyrrolidylmethyl)-benzene cations were used. In addition to the simple bromide anion, also dianions having a naphthalene core such as 1,5- and 2,6-naphthalenedisulfonate and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate were taken into account. Gelation tests demonstrated that organic salts used were able to harden ionic liquids. The materials obtained were investigated for their thermal stability and also for electric conductivity properties using mic…

The S … Hal and Se … Hal chalcogen bonding in a series of thiourea, selenourea and their derivatives

2021

The chalcogen bonding (ChB) in a series of thiourea, selenourea and their derivatives has been investigated in the present paper. Thus, selenourea and dimethylselenourea undergo dimerization and trimerization processes in the presence of various halogen species (1–5). Selenourea and dimethylselenourea form trimers 3–4 in the presence of lighter halogens (chlorine and bromine) through Se⋯Se chalcogen bonding. When moving to heavier halogen (iodine), the dimers 1–2 are formed. Thiourea and its derivatives also tend to make very strong S⋯S bonds and form dimers in the case of lighter halogens chlorine and bromine (compounds 6–7). However, the monomers separated by the iodine species are formed…

Identification of mixed bromidochloridotellurate anions in disordered crystal structures of (bdmim)2[TeX2Y4] (X, Y = Br, Cl; bdmim = 1-butyl-2,3-dime…

2014

The discrete mixed [TeBrxCl6−x]2− anions in their disordered crystal structures have been identified by using the phases prepared by the reaction of 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium halogenides (bdmim)X with tellurium tetrahalogenides TeX4 (X = Cl, Br) as examples. Homoleptic (bdmim)2[TeX6] [X = Cl (1), Br (2)] and mixed (bdmim)2[TeBr2Cl4] (3), and (bdmim)2[TeBr4Cl2] (4) are formed depending on the choice of the reagents, and their crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The coordination environments of tellurium in all hexahalogenidotellurates are almost octahedral. Because of the crystallographic disorder, the mixed [TeBr2Cl4]2− and [TeBr4Cl2]2− anions …

Screening of halogenated aromatic compounds in some raw material lots for an aluminium recycling plant

2004

Four samples of scrap raw materials for an aluminium recycling plant were screened for the occurrence of persistent halogenated aromatic compounds. The samples contained waste from handling of electric and electronic plastics, filter dust from electronic crusher, cyclone dust from electronic crusher and light fluff from car shredder. In our screening analyses, brominated flame retardants were observed in all samples. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) were identified in all samples in amounts of 245–67450 ng/g. The major PBDE congeners found were decabromo- and pentabromodiphenyl ethers. 1,1-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane, hexabromobenzene, ethyl-pentabromobenzene, tetrabromobisphenol-…

Tiotropium in asthma: Back to the future of anticholinergic treatment

2017

Abstract Asthma is among the most common chronic diseases worldwide; however, despite progresses in the understanding of the patho-physiological mechanisms and advances in the development of new therapeutic options and strategies, the disease remains uncontrolled in a not trivial proportion of subjects. Thus, the need of new molecules to treat the underlying biological and functional abnormalities and to control symptoms is strongly advocated by clinicians. In this scenario, the most recent GINA guidelines have included the use of tiotropium bromide in the most severe and uncontrolled forms of the disease, in addition to treatment with inhaled corticosteroid plus long acting beta adrenergic…

Design, synthesis, DNA-binding and cytotoxicity evaluation of new potential combilexines

2002

Combilexines, compounds in which a DNA intercalator is linked to a minor groove binding component, interact with the DNA in a sequence specific manner to yield in most cases compounds with anticancer activity. A series of new compounds closely related to netropsin in which the two components were linked by an amide group was synthesised as potential combilexines. As some of these compounds showed cytotoxic activity in vitro, an attempt was made to rationalise their mechanism of action. The DNA binding characteristics of the carboxamides were evaluated by thermal denaturation experiments and by ethidium bromide displacement assay. Their ability to inhibit the topoisomerase I was also determi…

Acetylcholine mediates the release of IL-8 in human bronchial epithelial cells by a NFkB/ERK-dependent mechanism

2007

Acetylcholine may play a role in cell activation and airway inflammation. We evaluated the levels of both mRNA and protein of muscarinic M(1), M(2), M(3) receptors in human bronchial epithelial cell line (16HBE). 16HBE cells were also stimulated with acetylcholine and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) and NFkB pathway activation as well as the IL-8 release was assessed in the presence or absence of the inhibitor of Protein-kinase (PKC) (GF109203X), of the inhibitor of mitogenic activated protein-kinase kinase (MAPKK) (PDO9805), of the inhibitor of kinaseB-alpha phosphorilation (pIkBalpha) (BAY11-7082), and of muscarinic receptor antagonists tiotropium bromide, 4-Diphenylacet…

Cigarette smoke alters non-neuronal cholinergic system components inducing MUC5AC production in the H292 cell line.

2013

Abstract Cigarette smoke extract (CSE) affects the expression of Choline Acetyl-Transferase (ChAT), muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, and mucin production in bronchial epithelial cells. Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC), muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3, ChAT expression, acetylcholine levels and acetylcholine binding were measured in a human pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma cell line (H292) stimulated with CSE. We performed ChAT/RNA interference experiments in H292 cells stimulated with CSE to study the role of ChAT/acetylcholine in MUC5AC production. The effects of Hemicholinium-3 (HCh-3) (50 μM) (a potent and selective choline uptake blocker) and Tiotropium bromide (Spiriva ® ) (100 nM), alone o…
