Spatial dispersion intensity measure of phase concentration distributions and its applications to quantitative characterization, distinguishing and c…
2008
A method of evaluation of spatial dispersion of structures is presented. A quantitative parameter measuring spatial dispersion is introduced. It is shown that this parameter indeed measures spatial dispersion. A classification of bubble flow structures based on values of this parameter is proposed. An example of application of the method to real flow structures is presented.
Phase behavior of the system hyperbranched polyglycerol+methanol+carbon dioxide
2010
Abstract Phase equilibrium data have been measured for the ternary system hyperbranched polyglycerol + methanol + carbon dioxide at temperatures of 313–450 K and pressures up to 13.5 MPa. Phase changes were determined according to a synthetic method using the Cailletet setup. At elevated temperatures the system shows a liquid–liquid–vapor region with lower solution temperatures. Besides the vapor–liquid and liquid–liquid equilibria, the vapor–liquid to vapor–liquid–liquid and vapor–liquid–liquid to liquid–liquid phase boundaries are reported at different polymer molar masses and can serve as test sets for thermodynamic models. A distinct influence of the polymer molar mass on the vapor–liqu…
Phase Behavior of the System Linear Polyglycerol + Methanol + Carbon Dioxide
2011
To compare the phase behavior of linear and hyperbranched polymers, the phase envelopes of the ternary system linear polyglycerol + methanol + carbon dioxide were determined for polymers of varying molar mass. Phase changes were detected by a static synthetic method using the Cailletet setup for temperatures between 331 K and 421 K and pressures up to 13.1 MPa. Besides the vapor–liquid and liquid–liquid equilibria, also the vapor–liquid to vapor–liquid–liquid and vapor–liquid–liquid to liquid–liquid phase boundaries are reported. The experimental results are similar to systems with hyperbranched polymers (rather than linear polymers). For the systems with linear polymers, however, the bubbl…
Conduit dynamics and post explosion degassing on Stromboli: A combined UV camera and numerical modeling treatment
2016
Recent gas flux measurements have shown that Strombolian explosions are often followed by periods of elevated flux, or “gas codas,” with durations of order a minute. Here we present UV camera data from 200 events recorded at Stromboli volcano to constrain the nature of these codas for the first time, providing estimates for combined explosion plus coda SO2 masses of ≈18–225 kg. Numerical simulations of gas slug ascent show that substantial proportions of the initial gas mass can be distributed into a train of “daughter bubbles” released from the base of the slug, which we suggest, generate the codas, on bursting at the surface. This process could also cause transitioning of slugs into cap b…
Concordant Intestinal Atresia in Two Pairs of Monozygotic Twins
2011
Intestinal atresia in both twins from the same pregnancy is very rare. Only seven pairs of twins have been described. The authors report on two cases of monozygotic twins with different types of intestinal atresia and clinical evolution. Both pairs of observed twins turned out to be concordant for the presence of intestinal malformations and for the absence of other linked malformations; nevertheless, the atresic lesions were anatomically discordant in each pair of monozygotic twins. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have shown some differences in phenotypic expression between the twins of both pairs. Possible etiologic factors and pathogenetic pathways are discussed, and…
Costa Blanca: Urban Evolution of a Mediterranean Region through GIS Data
2015
This paper investigates the international retirement migration from elderly northern Europeans into Spain and its influence on expansion of urban sprawl there. Key themes analyzed in this paper include the urban sprawl expansion during the Spanish housing bubble, and the link between lifestyle migrants and urban sprawl development. This paper considers the reasons for moving to Spain, which are chiefly related with the climate and lifestyle. It also explores the benefits and drawbacks of these en masse lifestyle migration and the environmental and landscape impacts on Mediterranean Spain. In order to visualize better this international migration we have created some GIS maps from a GIS proj…
Direct Measurement of Particle−Bubble Interactions in Aqueous Electrolyte: Dependence on Surfactant
1998
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of surfactant on the particle−bubble interaction. Therefore we constructed an experimental setup with which the interaction between colloidal pa...
The percolation threshold and permeability evolution of ascending magmas
2017
Abstract The development of gas permeability in magmas is a complex phenomenon that directly influences the style of a volcanic eruption. The emergence of permeability is linked to the concept of percolation threshold, which is the point beyond which gas bubbles are connected in a continuous network that allows gas escape. Measurements of the percolation threshold, however, range from ∼30 to 78 vol%. No known combination of parameters can explain such a wide range of threshold values, which affects our understanding of the relationship between percolation and permeability. We present permeability calculations on bubble-bearing rhyolitic melts that underwent experimental decompression. Sampl…
On the correlation between mechanical and TEM studies of the aging of palladium during tritium storage
2005
Abstract Tritium has considerable technological applications in nuclear industry. Since it is a radioactive element, its storage is often considered in the form of tritides which ensure the required safety. However, the decay of tritium into 3 He alters the tritide properties during aging. With the aim of understanding the aging mechanisms of palladium tritide, a macroscale approach coupled with a microscopic study was performed on palladium aged up to eight months after tritium loading. The macroscale investigation based on the vibration of microcantilevers allowed the mechanical response of the material to be followed during its aging. The microscopic study was performed by Transmission E…
