Joint Optimization of Detection Threshold and Resource Allocation in Infrastructure-based Multi-band Cognitive Radio Networks

2012

[EN] Consider an infrastructure-based multi-band cognitive radio network (CRN) where secondary users (SUs) opportunistically access a set of sub-carriers when sensed as idle. The carrier sensing threshold which affects the access opportunities of SUs is conventionally regarded as static and treated independently from the resource allocation in the model. In this article, we study jointly the optimization of detection threshold and resource allocation with the goal of maximizing the total downlink capacity of SUs in such CRNs. The optimization problem is formulated considering three sets of variables, i.e., detection threshold, sub-carrier assignment and power allocation, with constraints on…

Combining heat-transfer and energy budget models to predict thermal stress in Mediterranean intertidal mussels

2011

Recent studies have emphasised that organisms can experience physiological stress well within their geographic range limits. Developing methods for mechanistically predicting the presence, absence and physiological performance of organisms is therefore important because of the ongoing effects of climate change. In this study, we merged a biophysical–ecological (BE) model that estimates the aquatic (high tide) and aerial (low tide) body temperatures of Mytilus galloprovincialis with a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model to predict growth, reproduction and mortality of this Mediterranean mussel in both intertidal and subtidal environments. Using weather and chlorophyll-a data from three Mediter…

Mercury fluxes from volcanic and geothermal sources: an update

2014

We review the state of knowledge on global volcanogenic Hg emissions to the atmosphere and present new data from seven active volcanoes (Poás, Rincón de la Vieja, Turrialba, Aso, Mutnovsky, Gorely and Etna) and two geothermal fields (Las Pailas and Las Hornillas). The variability of Hg contents (c. 4–125 ng m−3) measured in gaseous emissions reflects the dynamic nature of volcanic plumes, where the abundances of volatiles are determined by the physical nature of degassing and variable air dilution. Based on our dataset and previous work, we propose that an average Hg/SO2 plume mass ratio of c. 7.8×10−6 (±1.5×10−6; 1 SE, n=13) is best representative of open-conduit quiescent degassing. Takin…

Akute Gefäßerkrankungen in der Gastroenterologie. Der Gastroenterologe - Acute gastroenterologic vascular diseases

2012

Acute gastroenterologic vascular emergencies are common situations in emergency departments and the clinical consequences range from trivial to life-threatening. Only the early recognition of these symptom patterns and prompt use of the appropriate diagnostic tools lead to a correct diagnosis with subsequent potentially life-saving treatment. To decrease the high mortality rate of acute mesenteric ischemia (50%), aorto-enteric fistula (30–40%), visceral artery aneurysms (10– 100%) and Budd-Chiari syndrome new strategies with an endovascular approach are gaining importance and are partially replacing established diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms. This article provides a review of the dia…

Redistribution of tax resources: a cooperative game theory approach

2021

AbstractWe consider the problem of how to distribute public expenditure among the different regions of an economic entity after all taxes have been collected. Typical examples are: the regions that make up a country, the states of a federal country, or the countries of a confederation of countries. We model the problem as a cooperative game in coalitional form, called the tax game. This game estimates the fiscal resources collected in each region, or coalition of regions, by differentiating between what comes from economic activity within each region and what comes from trade with the other regions. This methodology provides a measure of the disagreement within a region, or coalitions of re…

Zen Budisma atspoguļojums Japāņu restorāna interjera izveidē

2018

Diplomdarbā “Zen Budisma atspoguļojums Japāņu restorāna interjera izveidē”, analizējot pieejamo literatūru, tiek pētīts Zen Budisms, tam raksturīgās iezīmes, vēsture un atspoguļojums interjera dizainā. Empīriskajā daļā tiek pētīti Zen restorānu interjeri Kanādā, Ķīnā, Taizemē, Meksikā un Japānā. Radošajā daļā tiek izstrādāts interjera dizaina projekts Japāņu restorānam. Darbs sastāv no četrām nodaļām: pirmajā nodaļā tiek pētīts Mahājānas Budisms, ieskats vēsturē, otrajā nodaļā tiek pētīta Zen Budisma izcelsme, vēsture, attīstība Japānā un raksturīgais. Trešajā nodaļā tiek aplūkota Zen estētika un raksturīgais interjera dizainā. Ceturtajā nodaļā izstrādāts projekta apraksts, rasējumi un vizu…

The system of European Security in Modern History

2020

The challenges and threats that arise in the modern international system in the new millennium require coordinated and timely action by the European community. To ensure the main tasks of peaceful coexistence and economic and political development of the continent, the security system in Europe needs constant improvement and adaptation to new conditions. It is important to clarify the main threats that appear in today's security environment of Europe and to identify issues that should be solved by political leaders of countries and international organizations. Establishing of a collective security system against aggressive actions of the hybrid character by the Russian Federation, terrorist…

Multiwalled carbon nanotube reinforced polymer composites

2008

Due to their high stiffness and strength, as well as their electrical conductivity, carbon nanotubes are under intense investigation as fillers in polymer matrix composites. The nature of the carbon nanotube/polymer bonding and the curvature of the carbon nanotubes within the polymer have arisen as particular factors in the efficacy of the carbon nanotubes to actually provide any enhanced stiffness or strength to the composite. Here the effects of carbon nanotube curvature and interface interaction with the matrix on the composite stiffness are investigated using micromechanical analysis. In particular, the effects of poor bonding and thus poor shear lag load transfer to the carbon nanotube…

Carbon nanotubes as high-pressure cylinders and nanoextruders.

2006

Closed-shell carbon nanostructures, such as carbon onions, have been shown to act as self-contracting high-pressure cells under electron irradiation. We report that controlled irradiation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes can cause large pressure buildup within the nanotube cores that can plastically deform, extrude, and break solid materials that are encapsulated inside the core. We further showed by atomistic simulations that the internal pressure inside nanotubes can reach values higher than 40 gigapascals. Nanotubes can thus be used as robust nanoscale jigs for extruding and deforming hard nanomaterials and for modifying their properties, as well as templates for the study of individual n…
