Portal vein thrombosis and Budd-Chiari syndrome as onset of polycythemia vera
2013
Budd-Chiari syndrome may be defined as a heterogeneous group of vascular disorders characterized by obstruction of hepatic venous return to the level of hepatic venules, supra-hepatic veins, inferior vena cava or right atrium. The main cause of this syndrome is represented by myeloproliferative diseases and, in particular, by polycythemia vera. The latter may cause multiple splanchnic thrombosis, including portal vein thrombosis, particularly important for its clinical outcomes (ascites, collateral vessels genesis, etc.). We report 2 cases of a Budd-Chiari syndrome induced by polycythemia vera characterized by an abnormal clinical onset, both as regards subjects’ age (29 and 39 years old, r…
Per un’educazione universale. La via del Buddhismo nelle società post-secolari
2018
The paper examines Buddhism as a religion that suggests to the post-modern and post-secular West a new, inclusive, non-violent and ecological education. It proposes an universal education that responds to the request of religiosity of our societies. Buddhism is investigated as a millennial pedagogy, in which the path of spiritual growth coincides with a path of self-education that is articulated through an interior and social education. The center of the Buddhist doctrine is the meditation (dhyan), that leads the disciple, with the support of a master and the community, for a rebirth that, declaring him as the author of his own realization, leads him to establish empathic relationship with …
A Wnt-specific astacin proteinase controls head formation inHydra
2020
AbstractTheHydrahead organizer acts as a signaling center that initiates and maintains the primary body axis in steady state polyps and during budding or regeneration. Wnt/beta-Catenin signaling functions as a primary cue controlling this process, but how Wnt ligand activity is locally restricted at the protein level is poorly understood. Here we report the identification of an astacin family proteinase as a Wnt processing factor.Hydraastacin-7 (HAS-7) is expressed from gland cells as an apical-distal gradient in the body column, peaking close beneath the tentacle zone.HAS-7siRNA knockdown abrogates HyWnt3 proteolysis in the head tissue and induces a robust double axis phenotype, which is re…
Terricaulis silvestris gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel prosthecate, budding member of the family Caulobacteraceae isolated from forest soil
2020
The family Caulobacteraceae comprises prosthecate bacteria with a dimorphic cell cycle and also non-prosthecate bacteria. Cells of all described species divide by binary fission. Strain 0127_4T was isolated from forest soil in Baden Württemberg (Germany) and determined to be the first representative of the family Caulobacteraceae which divided by budding. Cells of strain 0127_4T were Gram-negative, rod-shaped, prosthecate, motile by means of a polar flagellum, non-spore-forming and non-capsulated. The strain formed small white colonies and grew aerobically and chemo-organotrophically utilizing organic acids, amino acids and proteinaceous substrates. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated…
Differences in the efficacy and safety among inhaled corticosteroids (ICS)/long-acting beta2-agonists (LABA) combinations in the treatment of chronic…
2015
Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are frequently recommended for the treatment of asthma and COPD, often in combination with long-acting beta2-agonists (LABA), depending on the severity of the disease and/or on the specific phenotype. Several ICS/LABA combinations are currently available that differ in their pharmacokinetic characteristics and dose of both components. Thus, this review assesses differences in the efficacy and the safety profiles of the ICS components in the two more frequently used ICS/LABA combinations (budesonide/formoterol and fluticasone/salmeterol) for the management of COPD. Whereas the basic mechanism of action is similar for all ICS (binding with the intracellular gluco…
Budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy: a new treatment approach for adult patients with asthma.
2007
An inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) or an ICS/long-acting beta(2)-agonist (LABA) combination plus short-acting beta(2)-agonist (SABA) as needed for symptom relief is recommended for persistent asthma. Additionally, budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy (Symbicort SMART, AstraZeneca, Sweden) has been approved for adults in the European Union. This option is well tolerated and offers greater reductions in asthma exacerbations together with similar improvements in daily symptom control, at a lower overall steroid load, compared with fixed-dose ICS/LABA plus SABA.Two large clinical trials investigated the use of budesonide/formoterol as maintenance and reliever compared with medium…
Budesonide induces remission more effectively than prednisone in a controlled trial of patients with autoimmune hepatitis.
2010
Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic liver disease associated with cirrhosis and liver failure. Corticosteroid therapy induces long-term remission but has many side effects. We compared the effects of budesonide (a steroid that is rapidly metabolized, with low systemic exposure) and prednisone, both in combination with azathioprine. We performed a 6-month, prospective, double-blind, randomized, active-controlled, multicenter, phase IIb trial of patients with AIH without evidence of cirrhosis who were given budesonide (3 mg, three times daily or twice daily) or prednisone (40 mg/d, tapered to 10 mg/d); patients also received azathioprine (1-2 mg/kg/d). Treatment was followed by a 6-month, …
Overall asthma control: the relationship between current control and future risk.
2009
Background Asthma guidelines emphasize both maintaining current control and reducing future risk, but the relationship between these 2 targets is not well understood. Objective This retrospective analysis of 5 budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy (Symbicort SMART Turbuhaler ∗ ∗Symbicort SMART and Turbuhaler are trademarks owned by AstraZeneca. Neither the Symbicort SMART posology nor the dry powder formulation Turbuhaler are currently approved in the United States.) studies assessed the relationship between asthma control questionnaire (ACQ-5) and Global Initiative for Asthma-defined clinical asthma control and future risk of instability and exacerbations. Methods The perc…
