A Balancing Act-How Mental Health Professionals Experience Being Personal in Their Relationships with Service Users.
2017
Although being personal in relationships with service users is commonly described as an important aspect of the way that professionals help people with severe mental problems, this has also been described to bring with it a need to keep a distance and set boundaries. This study aims to explore how professionals working in psychiatric care view being personal in their relationships with users.Qualitative interviews with 21 professionals working in three outpatient psychiatric units, analyzed through thematic analysis.Being personal in their relationships with users was described as something that participants regarded to be helpful, but that also entails risks. Participants described how they…
Seaweed fails to prevent ocean acidification impact on foraminifera along a shallow-water CO2 gradient
2015
Ocean acidification causes biodiversity loss, alters ecosystems, and may impact food security, as shells of small organisms dissolve easily in corrosive waters. There is a suggestion that photosynthetic organisms could mitigate ocean acidification on a local scale, through seagrass protection or seaweed cultivation, as net ecosystem organic production raises the saturation state of calcium carbonate making seawater less corrosive. Here, we used a natural gradient in calcium carbonate saturation, caused by shallow-water CO2 seeps in the Mediterranean Sea, to assess whether seaweed that is resistant to acidification (Padina pavonica) could prevent adverse effects of acidification on epiphytic…
Seawater carbonate chemistry and percentage cover of macroalgal species at three locations at Vulcano, Italy
2017
Beneficial effects of CO2 on photosynthetic organisms will be a key driver of ecosystem change under ocean acidification. Predicting the responses of macroalgal species to ocean acidification is complex, but we demonstrate that the response of assemblages to elevated CO2 are correlated with inorganic carbon physiology. We assessed abundance patterns and a proxy for CO2:HCO3- use (delta 13C values) of macroalgae along a gradient of CO2 at a volcanic seep, and examined how shifts in species abundance at other Mediterranean seeps are related to macroalgal inorganic carbon physiology. Five macroalgal species capable of using both HCO3- and CO2 had greater CO2 use as concentrations increased. Th…
“Weekly docetaxel and gemcitabine as first line treatment for metastatic breast cancer: results of a multicenter phase II study”
2004
<i>Objectives:</i> We conducted a multicenter phase II study to evaluate the clinical efficacy, toxicity, and dose intensity of a new weekly schedule of docetaxel and gemcitabine as first-line treatment of metastatic breast cancer patients. <i>Methods:</i> We enrolled 58 patients, 52% of whom had received a previous anthracycline-containing chemotherapy. The treatment schedule was: docetaxel 35 mg/m2 and gemcitabine 800 mg/m2 i.v. on days 1, 8, 15 every 28 days. <i>Results:</i> All patients were assessable for toxicity and 56 for efficacy. Overall response rate was 64.3% with 16.1% of complete responses and 48…
Genetic predisposition to male breast cancer in Poland
2021
Abstract Background Breast cancer in men accounts for fewer than 1 % of all breast cancer cases diagnosed in men and women. Genes which predispose to male breast cancer include BRCA1 and BRCA2. The role of other genes is less clear. In Poland, 20 founder mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, PALB2, NBN, RECQL are responsible for the majority of hereditary breast cancer cases in women, but the utility this genes panel has not been tested in men. Methods We estimated the prevalence of 20 alleles in six genes (BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, PALB2, NBN, RECQL) in 165 Polish male breast cancer patients. We compared the frequency of selected variants in male breast cancer cases and controls. Results One of the…
HER2 status in advanced gastric carcinoma: A retrospective multicentric analysis from Sicily.
2013
According to the ToGA trial, HER2 has been shown to be predictive for the success of treatment with trastuzumab in advanced gastric cancer (AGC). A number of studies have analyzed HER-2/neu overexpression in gastric carcinoma and identified the rate of HER2 positivity to be markedly varied. To date, the prevalence of HER2 overexpression in Sicilian people with AGC is unknown. Therefore, in the present study, a retrospective immunohistochemical analysis of HER2 was performed in a cohort of 304 AGC samples that were obtained from the archives of 10 Sicilian anatomopathological diagnostic units in order to verify the positive rate of HER2-positive cases. Furthermore, the characteristics of his…
GASTRIC METASTASES ORIGINATING FROM OCCULT BREAST LOBULAR CARCINOMA: DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROBLEMS
2008
Abstract Background Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant tumour to metastasize into the gastrointestinal tract in female and is second only to malignant melanoma. Nevertheless gastrointestinal metastases arising from breast cancer are quite rare. The upper gastrointestinal tract is more frequently involved and lobular infiltrating carcinoma has a greater predilection compared to the ductal type. Case presentation The authors describe the case of a 70 years old woman with a preoperative diagnosis of gastric undifferentiated medullary – type carcinoma, which was the first manifestation of an occult breast carcinoma. The primary site of carcinoma was identified with the use of a panel …
Impact of molecular and histological subtype of breast cancer on 18FDG-PET/CT imaging: Knowledge gained from recent studies
2016
International audience; Over the past few years, several studies have focused attention on the impact of breast cancer (BC) histological subtype or BC phenotype, as defined by hormone receptors (HR) and HER2 status, on the results of FDG-PET/CT at staging, or during neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). At staging, sclerotic bone metastases from invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) demonstrated low or no FDG uptake in comparison to metastases from invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). The CT component of PET/CT imaging should be carefully analyzed in the staging of ILC. In patients with triple negative or HER2-positive tumors, the proportion of extraskeletal metastases is high; this must be taken into acc…
Stage IV breast cancer: a population-based study about prognostic factors according to HER2 and HR status
2015
International audience; We aim to describe trends in net survival (NS) and to assess the prognostic factors among women with de novo metastatic breast cancer (MBC) according to human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and hormone receptor (HR) status. Data on women suffering from de novo MBC and diagnosed from 1998 to 2009 were provided by the Côte-d'Or breast cancer registry. NS was described using the Pohar Perme estimator and prognostic factors were investigated in a generalised linear model. We identified 232 patients (mean age = 64.7). Median NS was 29.2 months, 1- and 5-year NS were 76% and 26% respectively. The survival trend in patients with HER2-positive tumours who did not …
Intensity modulated radiation therapy with simultaneous integrated boost in early breast cancer irradiation. Report of feasibility and preliminary to…
2015
To investigate the feasibility and tolerance in the use of adjuvant intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and simultaneous integrated boost in patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery.Between September 2011 to February 2013, 112 women with a diagnosis of early breast cancer (T1-2, N0-1, M0) were treated with IMRT and simultaneous integrated boost after breast-conserving surgery in our institution. A dose of 50Gy in 25 fractions was prescribed to the whole breast and an additional dose of radiation was prescribed on the tumour bed. A dose prescription of 60Gy in 25 fractions to the tumour bed was used in patients with negative margins after surgery, w…
