Mobilizing ‘context’: Vocabulary checks in ESL tutoring sessions

This study investigates the practice of unplanned and emergent vocabulary checks, i.e. turns through which a speaker explicitly checks whether the recipient knows a word, in small-group tutorial instruction. The data are video-recorded English as a second language (ESL) tutoring sessions between a native English speaker tutor and ESL students at an urban community college in the United States. By drawing on conversation analysis, we analyze how vocabulary checks emerge sequentially and with the help of contextual interactional resources. Understanding Batesian mimicry is a classic problem in evolutionary biology. In Batesian mimicry, a defended species (the model) is mimicked by an undefended species (the mimic). Prior theories have emphasized the role of predator behavior and learning as well as evolution in model-mimic complexes but have not examined the role of population dynamics in potentially governing the relative abundances and even persistence of model-mimic systems. Taitoluistelijoiden tasapainotutkimuksen taustalla oli ammattivalmentajien mielenkiinto selvittää yksin- ja muodostelmaluistelijoiden eroja fyysisessä suorituskyvyssä, sekä sitä kautta tasapainokyvyssä. Tutkimus suoritettiin Jyväskylässä kevään ja kesän 2010 aikana. Tutkimukseen osallistui kaksi 9-14 -ikäisten tyttöjen koeryhmää, 20 yksin- ja 18 muodostelmaluistelijaa. He suorittivat fyysisiä ominaisuuksia sisältävät kenttätestit sekä tasapainotestejä sisältävät laboratoriotestit.
