A lexicographic Study: Medical Vocabulary in use
2011
INTRODUCTION Information, research and new ideas in medicine are spread mainly by the written word. Therefore, reading and writing are fundamental skills in collecting information and building a wide knowledge base not only in the student population but even as practising physicians and specialists. Knowing lexical items is an important building block in developing both of these language skills. There are several different measures of lexicographic competence, such as the General Service List or GSL (West, 1953), Academic Word List or AWL (Laufer &Nation,1999; Coxhead, 2000) and Medical Academic Word List or MAWL (Wang, Liang & Ge, 2008). The purpose of this study is to measure lexical comp…
Māsas kompetence kolorektālā vēža skrīninga izpildē ambulatorajā aprūpē
2020
Bakalaura darba tēma “Māsas kompetence kolorektālā zarnu vēža skrīninga izpildē ambulatorajā aprūpē.” Pustenko I., darba vadītāja Mg.paed. Lobova N. Bakalaura darbs 30 lappuses, 21 tabula, 24 literatūras avoti, 5 pielikumi. Latviešu valodā. Darba tēmas aktualitāti nosaka pieaugošais saslimšanu skaits ar kolorektālo vēzi. No 2019. gada 1. oktobra iespējams izmantot jaunu valsts apmaksātu kolorektālā vēža skrīninga testu.
Impact of functional mandibular advancement appliances on the temporomandibular joint : a systematic review
2015
Background Although many orthodontists have no doubts about the effectiveness of functional appliances for mandibular advancement, the impact on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is still in dispute. The objective of this systematic review is to examine the main effects on the TMJ of using functional appliances, both in healthy patients and in patients with a pre-existing disorder. Material and Methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Only systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized clinical trials (RCTs), case-control studies and cohort studies were included. A detailed language-independent electronic search was conducted in th…
SHORT-TERM VARIABILITY OF 24-H SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE IS ASSOCIATED WITH MICROALBUMINURIA IN PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY HYPERTENSION
2015
Introduction: Limited and conflicting data are available about the association between short-term blood pressure (BP) variability and urinary albumin excretion rate (uAER). Aim: To analyse the relationships between microalbuminuria, defined as an uAER between 20 and 200 lg/min, and short-term BP variability, assessed as average real variability (ARV), weighted standard deviation (SD) of 24-h BP, and as SD of daytime and nighttime BP. Methods: The study population consisted of 316 untreated essential hypertensive patients with normal estimated glomerular filtration rate ([60 ml/min/1.73m2), which underwent 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring and 24-h uAER determination. Results: Microalbuminuria w…

Retrospective study of the bone morphology in the posterior mandibular region. Evaluation of the prevalence and the degree of lingual concavity and t…
2016
Background In order to choose the appropriate implant size and to prevent complications, an oral surgeon must know the size and shape of the mandible. In the posterior mandibular region, a lingual undercut is often found and could represent a difficulty hard to manage if a lingual or buccal perforation occur. A large series of computed tomography (CT) images of the mandibular first molar was evaluated and the bone morphology, the prevalence and the degree of the lingual concavity in the first molar region were studied. Material and Methods One hundred and fifty-one computed tomography (CT) examinations of patients were retrospectively evaluated to determine anatomical variations in bone mor…
Functional Plasticity after Unilateral Vestibular Midbrain Infarction in Human Positron Emission Tomography.
2016
The aim of the study was to uncover mechanisms of central compensation of vestibular function at brainstem, cerebellar, and cortical levels in patients with acute unilateral midbrain infarctions presenting with an acute vestibular tone imbalance. Eight out of 17 patients with unilateral midbrain infarctions were selected on the basis of signs of a vestibular tone imbalance, e.g., graviceptive (tilts of perceived verticality) and oculomotor dysfunction (skew deviation, ocular torsion) in F18-fluordeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET at two time points: A) in the acute stage, and B) after recovery 6 months later. Lesion-behavior mapping analyses with MRI verified the exact structural lesion sites. Group su…
Fibularis tertius muscle in women & men: A surface anatomy cross-sectional study across countries
2019
The fibularis tertius muscle (FTM) is a rare anatomic variation. The prevalence of this exclusively human structure, which is found in the anterior compartment of the leg, is often underestimated, and it is believed that foot and ankle conditions are more difficult to manage in patients with an FTM. The aim of this study was to assess the presence of the FTM palpation and determine whether its presence is associated with an individual’s sex, because the exact prevalence in males and females is unclear. An observational cross-sectional study was carried out. The study included 481 people (23.49% men and 76.51% women) with a mean age of 23.51±5.369 years, who were recruited from a Podiatric M…
Circulating monocyte subsets and heart failure prognosis
2018
Altres ajuts: Fundacio' La MARATO' de TV3 (201502 to ABG, 201516), AdvanceCat with the support of ACCIÓ [Catalonia Trade & Investment, Generalitat de Catalunya], Fundació Bancària La Caixa. Monocytes are a heterogeneous population of effector cells with key roles in tissue integrity restoration and maintenance. Here, we explore the association of monocyte subsets and prognosis in patients with ambulatory heart failure (HF). Monocyte subsets were classified as classical (CD14 ++ /CD16 -), intermediate (CD14 ++ /CD16 +), or non-classical (CD14 + /CD16 ++). Percentage distribution and absolute cell count were assessed in each subset, and multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed wit…
The At Risk Child Clinic (ARCC): 3 Years of Health Activities in Support of the Most Vulnerable Children in Beira, Mozambique
2018
The concept of “children at risk” changes worldwide according to each specific context. Africa has a large burden of overall risk factors related to childhood health and development, most of which are of an infective or social origin. The aim of this study was to report and analyze the volumes of activities of fifteen At Risk Child Clinics (ARCCs) within the Beira District (Mozambique) over a 3 year-period in order to define the health profile of children accessing such health services. We retrospectively analyzed the data from all of the children accessing one of the 15 Beira ARCCs from January 2015 to December 2017. From this, 17,657 first consultations were registered. The mo…
