Effect of Systemic Hypertension With Versus Without Left Ventricular Hypertrophy on the Progression of Atrial Fibrillation (from the Euro Heart Surve…
2018
Hypertension is a risk factor for both progression of atrial fibrillation (AF) and development of AF-related complications, that is major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). It is unknown whether left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) as a consequence of hypertension is also a risk factor for both these end points. We aimed to assess this in low-risk AF patients, also assessing gender-related differences. We included 799 patients from the Euro Heart Survey with nonvalvular AF and a baseline echocardiogram. Patients with and without hypertension were included. End points after 1 year were occurrence of AF progression, that is paroxysmal AF becoming persistent and/or permanent AF,…

Current status of the torus palatinus and torus mandibularis
2007
While there is a hereditary component to tori, this does not explain all cases. Tori tend to appear more frequently during middle age of life; the torus palatinus is more commonly observed in females, but this is not the case with the torus mandibularis. Certain ethnic groups are more prone to one torus or the other. The torus is mainly removed due to prostodontic reasons, as it may also be used as biomaterial, not only in periodontology, but also in implantology. The aim of this study was a review of the literature from the past twenty years. Sin financiación 1.071 JCR (2010) Q3, 52/77 Dentistry, oral surgery & medicine UEM
The relationship between workload and burnout among nurses: The buffering role of personal, social and organisational resources
2021
Workload in the nursing profession is high, which is associated with poor health. Thus, it is important to get a proper understanding of the working situation and to analyse factors which might be able to mitigate the negative effects of such a high workload. In Germany, many people with serious or life-threatening illnesses are treated in non-specialized palliative care settings such as nursing homes, hospitals and outpatient care. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the buffering role of resources on the relationship between workload and burnout among nurses. A nationwide cross-sectional survey was applied. The questionnaire included parts of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Qu…

Clinical and molecular spectrum of renal malformations in Kabuki syndrome.
2013
International audience; OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and types of renal malformations, and to evaluate renal function in a cohort of patients with Kabuki syndrome (KS). STUDY DESIGN: Renal ultrasound scans and plasma creatinine measurements were collected from a French cohort of 94 patients with genotyped KS. Renal function was evaluated based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate. A genotype-phenotype study was conducted for renal and urinary tract malformations. RESULTS: Renal malformations were present in 22% of cases, and urinary tract anomalies were present in 15%. Renal malformations were observed in 28% of the MLL2 mutation-positive group and in 0% of the MLL2 mutation…
ASSOCIATION OF RENAL RESISTIVE INDEX WITH MARKERS OF EXTRARENAL VASCULAR CHANGES IN PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS
2016
Introduction: Recent data suggest that renal hemodynamic parameters obtained by duplex Doppler sonography, especially the intrarenal resistive index (RRI), may be associated with systemic vascular changes. However, limited and conflicting data exist about the relationship between aortic stiffness and RI in autoimmune diseases, like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Aim: To evaluate the relationship between RRI and arterial stiffness, assessed by aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), and between RRI and carotid atherosclerosis, evaluated by intima-media thickness (IMT) measurement in patients with SLE. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 39 SLE subjects (mean age 39 years) tha…
Solitary intraosseous neurofibroma of the mandible. Apropos of a case
2010
Neurofibroma is a benign neoplasm derived from peripheral nerves. Most of these are associated with Neurofibromatosis but may also occur as solitary lesions. When found on the head and neck they are generally located in the soft tissue. Intraosseous location is very rare. The following report describes a case of an intraosseous neurofibroma located in the left mandibular ramus of a 14-year-old child. The patient did not had clinical evidence of the lesion and it was found on a routine radiographic examination. Surgical excision of the lesion was scheduled and the sample was submitted to histopathological study. Representative sample cuts were studied using conventional techniques of hematox…
Therapy and prognosis of extraoral malignant melanoma metastasizing to the jaw: case report and literature review.
2009
t a d With approximately 75% of all skin cancer-related deaths, malignant melanoma (MM) is the most lethal among common skin cancers, mostly because of its disposition to early lymphogenic and hematogenic metastasis. If a MM is diagnosed early, the overall prognosis is excellent, but once metastasized it becomes an incurable disease with high mortality. Prognosis is dependent on parameters such as gender, anatomic location, level of invasion, thickness, type of primary tumor, ulceration, and number and status of regional lymphatic nodes. For incidence and mortalty, a decrease in young but an increase in older roups—with geographic differences—has been reported. Because of the embryologic or…
Assessment of antibiotic prescribing in Latvian general practitioners.
2013
Abstract Background Though general antibiotic consumption data is available, information on the actual patterns of prescribing antibiotics locally is difficult to obtain. An easy to use methodology was designed to assess ambulatory management of infections by Latvian general practitioners (GPs). Methods GPs were asked to record data in a patient data collection form for every patient that received antibiotics. Study period – (7 days) one week in November, 2008. Data recorded included the following details: an antibiotic, the prescribed dose, dosing interval, route of administration combined with the demographic factors of the patient and clinical diagnosis based on a pre-defined list. Resul…
