A microcosm experiment to evaluate the influence of location and quality of plant residues on residue decomposition and genetic structure of soil mic…
2007
The effects of location (soil surface vs. incorporated in soil) and nature of plant residues on degradation processes and indigenous microbial communities were studied by means of soil microcosms incubation in which the different soil zones influenced by decomposition i.e. residues, soil adjacent to residues (detritusphere) and distant soil unaffected by decomposition (bulk soil) were considered. Plant material decomposition, organic carbon assimilation by the soil microbial biomass and soil inorganic N dynamics were studied with 13 C labelled wheat straw and young rye. The genetic structure of the community in each soil zone were compared between residue locations and type by applying B- a…
Synthesis of hyperbranched poly(tert-butyl acrylate) by self-condensing atom transfer radical polymerization of a macroinimer
2000
Using 2-hydroxyethyl α-bromoisobuty-rate as initiator, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert-butyl acrylate leads to poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) with a hydroxyl group at one and a bromine atom at the other end. Esterification of the hydroxyl group of these heterotelechelic polymers with acryloyl chloride yields PtBA (M n = 3060) with a polymerizable double bond at one end and a bromine atom at the other end which can act as an initiator in ATRP (macroinimer). Self-condensing ATRP of such a macroinimer leads to hyperbranched or highly branched PtBA. The polymer was characterized by GPC viscosity measurements. Even at M w = 78800, a rather low polydispersity index of M w M …
Stable Cu isotope fractionation in soils during oxic weathering and podzolization
2011
Abstract Copper stable isotope ratios are fractionated during various biogeochemical processes and may trace the fate of Cu during long-term pedogenetic processes. We assessed the effects of oxic weathering (formation of Cambisols) and podzolization on Cu isotope ratios (δ65Cu). Two Cambisols (oxic weathered soils without strong vertical translocations of soil constituents) and two Podzols (soils showing vertical translocation of organic matter, Fe and Al) were analyzed for Cu concentrations, partitioning of Cu in seven fractions of a sequential extraction and δ65Cu values in bulk soil. Cu concentrations in the studied soils were low (1.4–27.6 μg g−1) and Cu was mainly associated with stron…
Novel diamine-bis(phenolate) Ti(IV) complexes – tuning the complex structure to control catalytic properties in α-olefin polymerization
2016
Abstract Four monomeric titanium(IV) dichloride complexes of amine-bis(phenolate) ligands having an extra donor arm (2a–2d) and one oxo-bridged complex 3 were successfully synthesized in the reaction of TiCl4 with a sodium salt of the appropriate ligand, and they were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The ligands had either a dimethylamino side‐arm donor and t-Bu substituents on both (1a) and one (1d) phenolate rings or a diisopropylamino side-arm donor and t-Bu (1b) and t-Bu along with OMe (1c) phenolate substituents. All complexes upon activation with [Ph3CB(C6F5)4] and MAO were used to catalyze polymerization of 1-octene (in liquid monomer) into poly(1-octene). Their activities as we…
Variability of near-surface saturated hydraulic conductivity for the clay soils of a small Sicilian basin
2019
Abstract Proper characterization of saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, of clay soils in a hillslope or a basin is still a challenge for soil science. In this investigation, the clay soils of the Maganoce (Sicily, Italy) basin were sampled at 19 sampling sites by the BEST procedure of soil hydraulic characterization. More OM implied less compact conditions (decreasing dry soil bulk density; coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.67), more stability to water of the soil aggregates (increasing water stable aggregates; R2 = 0.83) and, consequently, higher Ks values (R2 = 0.54). Variability of Ks was lower in the steeper zones of the basin than in the flatter ones. A comparison with the Ks data…
A continuous reaction system to investigate dispersion polymerization of vinyl monomers in supercritical carbon dioxide
2006
A laboratory-scale continuous reaction system using a stirred tank reac- tor was assembled in our laboratory to study the dispersion polymerization of vinyl monomers in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The apparatus was equipped with a suitable downstream separation section to collect solid particles entrained in the effluent stream from the reactor, whose monomer concentration could be measured online with a gas chromatograph. The dispersion polymerization of methyl methacry- late in scCO2 was selected as a model process to be investigated in the apparatus. The experiments were performed at 65 8C and 25 MPa with 2,2 0 -azobisisobutyroni- trile as the initiator and a reactive polysilox…
Effects of soil compaction, rain exposure and their interaction on soil carbon dioxide emission
2012
Soils release more carbon, primarily as carbon dioxide (CO2), per annum than current global anthropogenic emissions. Soils emit CO2 through mineralization and decomposition of organic matter and respiration of roots and soil organisms. Given this, the evaluation of the effects of abiotic factors on microbial activity is of major importance when considering the mitigation of greenhouse gases emissions. Previous studies demonstrate that soil CO2 emission is significantly affected by temperature and soil water content. A limited number of studies have illustrated the importance of bulk density and soil surface characteristics as a result of exposure to rain on CO2 emission, however, none exami…
The effect of pre-heating on monomer elution from bulk-fill resin composites
2020
Background The present study was aimed to evaluate the effect of pre-heating of bulk -fill resin composites on monomer elution from them. Material and Methods Three different types of resin composites were used including Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill, X-tra Fill and X-tra Base. 10 cylindrical samples were prepared from each resin composites. Before light curing, 5 samples were pre-heated until reaching 68˚C, then 5 other samples were polymerized at room temperature. After 24 hours, release of UDMA, TEGDMA and BIS-GMA monomers were measured by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis. Data analysis was performed by two-way ANOVA test, Games-Howell and Sidak post hoc tests. Results Pre-heat…
Effect of over the counter mouthwashes with and without alcohol on sorption and solubility of bulk fill resins
2020
Background Composites sorption and solubility can be precursors of several chemical and physical processes, which lead to deleterious effects on the polymer structure. This study evaluated the effect of mouthwashes with and without alcohol on the sorption and solubility of conventional and low viscosity bulk fill resins. Material and Methods Four types of Bulk Fill resins (Filtek™ Bulk Fill, X-tra Fil, Filtek™ Bulk Fill Flow and X-tra Base) were submitted to the following mouthwashes: Listerine Cool Mint and Periogard (containing alcohol) and Listerine Zero and Periogard (alcohol-free). The specimens were stored in the mouthwashes for seven days. Solubility and sorption tests were performed…
Polyreactions in ordered systems: Polymerization of octadecyl methacrylate in monolayers at the gas–water interface
1977
The ultraviolet-initiated polymerization of octadecyl methacrylate (ODMA, octadecyl 2-methyl-2-propenoate) as a monomolecular layer at the gas-water interface was studied. The polymerization was carried out at 27°C at the nitrogen-water interface; air inhibits the polymerization. At 27°C the ODMA monolayer exhibits three different states which were characterized by surface pressure-area diagrams and by surface potential measurements. The ODMA monolayer was polymerized under constant surface pressure in the range between 0 and 10 dyne/cm. The polymerization was followed by recording the contraction of the film. The conversion was determined by comparison of the area per monomer unit during p…
