New bundle branch block after coronary artery bypass grafting— evaluation by CK-MB isoenzyme analysis and transoesophageal echocardiography
1990
Twelve patients with a new complete bundle branch block after coronary artery bypass grafting underwent transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The results of TEE were compared with the pre-operative ventriculography, CK-MB isoenzyme time-release curves and clinical course. In eight patients with transient right bundle branch block or bifascicular block, low CK-MB activities and an uncomplicated postoperative course, transoesophageal echocardiography showed no new segmental wall motion abnormalities apart from a paradoxical septal movement in five. A persistent right or left bundle branch block was associated with either elevated isoenzyme activities, transoesophageal echocardiographic evi…
Chronic l-DOPA treatment increases striatal cannabinoid CB1 receptor mRNA expression in 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats
2000
Abstract The effect of a unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion of the left medial forebrain bundle and 3 weeks treatment with l -DOPA of normal and 6-OHDA lesioned rats on CB1r mRNA expression was investigated by in situ hybridization. A 6-OHDA lesion of nigrostriatal pathway alone, confirmed by the loss of nigral tyrosine hydroxylase mRNA, did not alter CB1r mRNA levels in the dopamine depleted striatum. Similarly, chronic l -DOPA treatment of normal rats had no effect on striatal CB1r mRNA expression. In contrast, chronic l -DOPA treatment of 6-OHDA-lesioned rats significantly increased CB1r mRNA expression in the denervated striatum. These results suggest that the CB1r activity ma…
Elevation of striatal urate in experimental models of Parkinson's disease: a compensatory mechanism triggered by dopaminergic nigrostriatal degenerat…
2014
Epidemiological studies have indicated an inverse association between high uricemia and incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD). To investigate the link between endogenous urate and neurotoxic changes involving the dopaminergic nigrostriatal system, this study evaluated the modifications in the striatal urate levels in two models of PD. To this end, a partial dopaminergic degeneration was induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) in mice, while a severe dopaminergic degeneration was elicited by unilateral medial forebrain bundle infusion of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in rats. Urate levels were measured by in vivo microdialysis at 7 or 14 days from toxin exposure. The resu…
Segmental anatomy of the vastus lateralis: guidelines for muscle-sparing flap harvest.
2014
Background: The vastus lateralis muscle is a versatile donor site for pedicled and free flaps that, despite great potential, remains unpopular. Although the muscle is classically described as a single belly, evidence exists for a more complex morphology. The aim of this study was to investigate the segmental anatomy of the vastus lateralis muscle and the feasibility of selective flap harvest. Methods: Ten cadaveric lower limbs were investigated. Muscular partitions were identified according to morphologic architecture, vascular supply, and nerve supply; guidelines for selective flap harvest were described. Twenty-three segmental vastus lateralis (n = 14) or chimeric anterolateral thigh-vast…
Right ventricular dysfunction in hemodynamically stable patients with acute pulmonary embolism
2013
Abstract Background Echocardiography for risk stratification in hemodynamically stable patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) is well-established. Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) is associated with an elevated mortality and adverse outcome. The aim of our study was to compare RVD criteria and investigate the role of elevated systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) in the diagnosis of RVD. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the echocardiographic and laboratory data of all hemodynamically stable patients with confirmed PE (2006-2011). The data were compared with three different definitions of RVD: Definition 1: RV dilatation, abnormal motion of interventricular septum, RV hypokinesis or…
Sex-Specific Ventricular Arrhythmias and Mortality in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Recipients
2021
OBJECTIVES The study goal was to examine whether there are sex-related differences in the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias and mortality in CRT-defibrillator (CRT-D) recipients. BACKGROUND Few studies have evaluated sex-related benefits of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). Moreover, data on sex-related differences in the occurrence of ventricular tachyarrhythmias in this population are limited. METHODS A multicenter retrospective study was conducted in 460 patients (355 male subjects and 105 female subjects) from the UMBRELLA (Incidence of Arrhythmia in Spanish Population With a Medtronic Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator Implant) national registry. Patients were followed up thro…
[Penile Flexiflate® Surgitek prosthesis explant and simultaneous three-component hydraulic Titan® Alpha 1 prosthesis implantation, with double incisi…
2010
Introduction and Objectives We treated a 45 years old patient, suffering from diabetes mellitus since childhood, with retinal, neurovascular and kidney complications. In 1988, for erectile dysfunction (ED) resistant to medical injective treatment, the patient underwent ligation of the dorsal vein of the penis without any result. In 1989 a Flexiflate® hydraulic prosthesis was implanted with resolution of ED. In 2005 the patient underwent simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant with a trans-laparotomic approach for end stage renal disease and diabetes mellitus. In 2009, because of the Flexiflate® Surgitek malfunction, the patient underwent explantation of the Flexiflate® prosthesis and si…
Modular megaprosthesis reconstruction for oncological and non-oncological resection of the elbow joint
2016
Abstract Background Reconstruction of large bone defects around the elbow joint is surgically demanding due to sparse soft tissue coverage, complex biomechanics and the close proximity to neurovascular structures. Modular megaprostheses are established reconstruction tools for the elbow, but only small case series have been reported in the literature. Methods Thirty-six patients who underwent reconstruction of the elbow joint with a modular megaprosthesis were reviewed retrospectively. In 31 patients (86.1%), elbow replacement was performed after resection of a bone tumour, whereas five non-oncological patients (13.9%) underwent surgery because of a previous failed elbow reconstruction. Fun…
Bubble formation and motion in non-crimp fabrics with perturbed bundle geometry
2010
The behaviour of the fluid front during impregnation of non-crimp fabrics has been considered. Particular attention is paid to creation of bubbles at the fluid front and a virtual 3D model mimickin ...
A Statistical Approach to Permeability of Clustered Fibre Reinforcements
2004
The focus is set on mesoscale modelling of permeability of real fabrics used in composite manufacturing. Of particular interest is the effect of expected perturbations from perfect geometries, such as fibre bundle crimp, on the permeability. To start with, variational methods are used to calculate the permeability of individual gaps between fibre bundles. Based on this study a network of unit cells is formed enabling studies of two-and three-dimensional flow through the structure. From such an analysis the overall permeability of an arbitrary distribution of unit cell permeabilities can be calculated. Here random and controlled distributions are simulated. The former is an approximate repr…
