Hemodynamic impact of isobaric levobupivacaine versus hyperbaric bupivacaine for subarachnoid anesthesia in patients aged 65 and older undergoing hip…

2014

Background The altered hemodynamics, and therefore the arterial hypotension is the most prevalent adverse effect after subarachnoid anesthesia. The objective of the study was to determine the exact role of local anesthetic selection underlying spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension in the elderly patient. We conducted a descriptive, observational pilot study to assess the hemodynamic impact of subarachnoid anesthesia with isobaric levobupivacaine versus hyperbaric bupivacaine for hip fracture surgery. Description Hundred twenty ASA status I-IV patients aged 65 and older undergoing hip fracture surgery were enrolled. The primary objective of our study was to compare hemodynamic effects based …

Occurrence of rapid eye movement sleep deprivation after surgery under regional anesthesia.

2013

Sleep disturbances after general surgery have been described. In this study, we assessed rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in patients undergoing knee replacement surgery using a regional anesthetic technique.Ambulatory polysomnography (PSG) was performed on 3 nights: the night before surgery (PSG1), the first night after surgery (PSG2), and the fifth postoperative night (PSG3). Postoperative analgesia was maintained with peripheral nerve catheters for the first 3 days and with oral opioids thereafter. In addition, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs were administered. Postoperative pain was monitored using a visual analog scale.PSG was performed in 12 patients, 6 men and 6 women, with a mean …

Isoflurane is associated with a similar incidence of emergence agitation/delirium as sevoflurane in young children ? a randomized controlled study

2006

Summary Background:  Children may be agitated or even delirious especially when recovering from general anesthesia using volatile anesthetics. Many trials have focused on the newer agents sevoflurane and desflurane but for the widely used isoflurane little is known about its potential to generate agitation. We investigated the emergence characteristics of small children after sevoflurane or isoflurane with caudal anesthesia for postoperative pain control. Methods:  After institutional approval and parental consent, anesthesia was randomly performed with sevoflurane (n = 30) or isoflurane (n = 29) in children at the age of 3.8 ± 1.8 years during surgical interventions on the lower part of th…

Comparative split-mouth study of the anesthetic efficacy of 4% articaine versus 0.5% bupivacaine in impacted mandibular third molar extraction

2013

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of articaine at 4% (epinephrine 1:100,000) with bupivacaine at 0.5% (epinephrine 1:200,000) for surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. Study Design: This was a randomized, double blind, split-mouth, clinical trial. Thirty-six patients took part and underwent extraction of 72 lower third molars. The variables studied were: anesthetic latency time, intra-operative bleeding, anesthetic quality, hemodynamic changes during the surgical intervention, anesthetic duration in the soft tissues, post-operative analgesia and post-operative pain at 2, 6, 12 and 24 hours using a visual analogue scale, as well as a…

Effects of bupivacaine on human erythrocytes submitted to stress and evidence for an interaction between bupivacaine and flumazenil

1999

Aims To examine the effects of bupivacaine on erythrocytes submitted to an oxidative stress (AAPH) and to provide evidence for an in vitro interaction between bupivacaine and flumazenil. Methods Human erythrocytes were studied with or without AAPH in the presence of different concentrations of bupivacaine (0.15, 0.3, 0.9 and 1.8 mmol l−1 ), or flumazenil (0.16 mmol l−1 ) and with the association of flumazenil and two doses of bupivacaine (0.15 and 0.3 mmol l−1 ). Potassium efflux was measured by flame photometry at t0, and every 30 min for 2 h. Results In the absence of AAPH, extracellular potassium remained unchanged. Oxidative stress induced a significant increase in extracellular potassi…

Modeling the chiral resolution ability of highly sulfated β-cyclodextrin for basic compounds in electrokinetic chromatography

2013

Abstract Despite the fact that extensive research in the field of enantioseparations by capillary electrophoresis has been carried out, it is difficult to predict whether a concrete chiral selector would be useful for the separation of a racemic compound. Hence, several experimental effort is necessary to test the abilities of individual chiral selectors, usually by trial and error procedures. Thus, the enantioseparation of a new racemate becomes a time- and money-consuming task. In this work, the ability of highly sulfated β-cyclodextrin (HS-β-CD) as chiral selector in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC) is modeled for the first time, using exclusively directly-available structural data of…

Fast-Track Surgery and Early Rehabilitation for Total Hip Replacement in Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics

2019

Abstract Due to an ageing population, the necessity for hip replacement has grown, and therefore, new options are being sought, such as the Fast-track principle, to improve patient condition, reduce their hospital stay and enhance the hospital’s ability to treat more patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of same-day patient mobilisation on pain, side effects, complications, duration of hospital stay, and recovery after primary hip replacement, using intermediate-acting local anaesthetics in spinal anaesthesia (SA). A prospective, randomised study was conducted at the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics. Forty-six patients undergoing total hip replacement were …

The acute myotoxic effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine after continuous peripheral nerve blockades.

2003

Bupivacaine causes muscle damage. However, the myotoxic potency of ropivacaine is still unexplored. Therefore, we performed this study to compare the effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine on skeletal muscle tissue in equipotent concentrations. Femoral nerve catheters were inserted into anesthetized minipigs, and 20 mL of either bupivacaine (5 mg/mL) or ropivacaine (7.5 mg/mL) was injected. Subsequently, bupivacaine (2.5 mg/mL) and ropivacaine (3.75 mg/mL) were continuously infused over 6 h. Control animals were treated with corresponding volumes of normal saline. Finally, muscle samples were dissected at injection sites. After processing and staining, histological patterns of muscle damage…
