Explaining the relationship between socially responsible products and the operations of the firm: The case of equine assisted therapy
2018
Abstract Although there is a growing interest in social responsibility in research as well as in practice, the majority of studies on corporate social responsibility do not explicitly investigate operations management issues when adopting socially responsible practices under the “people” pillar of sustainability. This paper, dealing with the theme of social responsibility in operations management, aims at clarifying the complex relationship between socially responsible product/service and the operations of the company. The empirical context of the study is the sport industry, where the attention to social issues is well established. We used a mixed theoretical-empirical approach to develop …
Racism and ethics in the globalized business world
2002
This paper analyzes the concept of racism in the context of business ethics and globalization. It first introduces three ethical traditions to understand moral issues in business: deontological, utilitarian and virtue ethics. Then it discusses about the challenges and demands that globalization has set to multicultural and multinational business operations. Third, it clarifies how racism works when it is understood as an ideology‐based phenomenon. It argues that there is a great value of knowing how racism works for the development of an anti‐racist and nondiscriminating organization. Although any of the three traditions on ethical thinking does not give direct answer to the question of how…
Exploring the Anatomy of Franchising: A Cross-National Examination of US and Finnish Franchise Contract Provisions
2004
The present study focuses on describing and comparing the provisions of the franchise contracts and pre-sale disclosures to prospective franchisees in the USA and Finland. A fact that makes the investigation especially interesting is that no franchising specific legislation exists in Finland. Whereas in the USA franchisors are by a directive of the Federal Trade Commission required to publicly disclose key information on their franchise systems. The information is of paramount importance for potential franchisees who need to analyze franchise offering(s) before their buying decision. Two separate samples were developed for the study. The member franchisors of the International Franchise Ass…
Distance Factors in the Foreign Market Entry of Software SMEs
2010
Recent studies have indicated that the internationalization process of software SMEs is somewhat independent on the effect of psychic or geographic distance. However, these studies have analyzed the general pattern of entries where software SMEs not commonly follow a step-wise entry route from nearby countries to distant ones. Thus, it remains unknown what the effect of psychic and geographical distance is when these firms enter a distant foreign market. The findings in this case study reveal that psychic and geographic distance inhibited the foreign market entry of software SMEs. However, the distant foreign market entry of these firms was facilitated by distance-bridging and distance-comp…
Results of a Prospective, Open-Label Trial to Assess the Efficacy, Safety and Immunogenicity of Wilate® in Children Under 6 Years of Age with Inherit…
2011
Abstract Abstract 3330 Introduction: Wilate® is a new-generation plasma-derived concentrate of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII (FVIII) developed for treatment of patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD) and haemophilia A. The objective of this study was to assess efficacy, safety and immunogenicity of Wilate in children below 6 years of age with inherited VWD. Methods: The prospective, multi-centre trial included patients with inherited VWD of any type below 6 years of age with insufficient response to DDAVP. Any clinical event requiring VWF/FVIII concentrate treatment within 1 year was treated with Wilate. Efficacy was recorded by using a 4-point VRS and in vivo recovery of F…
Narratives of Patients with Fatal Outcomes During the Phase 2 TITAN and Phase 3 HERCULES Studies
2019
Background: Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) is a rare but life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy, with an untreated mortality rate of >90%. Prompt treatment with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) and immunosuppression improves outcomes in patients with aTTP, but 10-20% of patients still die acutely from this disease. The aim of this analysis was to describe in more detail the characteristics and disease courses of the patients who died during the caplacizumab clinical development program. Methods: Patient narratives on all deaths occurring during the phase 2 TITAN and phase 3 HERCULES studies were extracted. Results: In the overall study periods, a total of 6 pat…
OP0089 METABOLIC SYNDROME IS COMMON AROUND THE TIME OF EARLY RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS DIAGNOSIS AND ASSOCIATIONS VARY BY SEX AND MENOPAUSAL STATUS: RESUL…
2019
Background Prevalence studies of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA) are sparse and estimates are variable. Differences by sex and menopausal status have not been formally assessed. Objectives We estimated prevalence and factors associated with MetS in ERA patients treated in routine practice settings. Variations by sex, and by menopausal status were also examined. Methods Cross-sectional data were analyzed from patients meeting 1987 or 2010 ACR/EULAR RA criteria enrolled in the Canadian Early Arthritis Cohort (CATCH) from January 2007-March 2017. CATCH is a prospective multicenter observational study of patients diagnosed and treated for early inflammatory arthrit…
Early Mortality in Patients with Multiple Myeloma Treated with Novel Agents - Analysis from Polish Myeloma Study Group
2020
Background Although the introduction of novel agents improved the survival outcomes in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), some patients died within one year (early mortality, EM) following diagnosis. In this study, we evaluated the EM rate, and investigated the risk factors associated with EM in MM patients. Aims In this study we investigated risk factors associated with EM in MM patients initially treated with novel-agent containing regimen. Methods We conducted a multicenter (15 Polish sites) retrospective study a cohort of symptomatic MM pts diagnosed between October 2006 and November 2019 and living < 365 days (d) after diagnosis. All pts were dead at the time of the analysis. …
