Analysis of Joint Quality along Welding Plane

2009

Porthole die extrusion is an always more important process for industrial applications. It is, however, characterized by a considerable complexity; in fact, different parameters have to be carefully set for improving the final part. A critical zone that strongly influences the goodness of the extruded component is the so called “welding plane”. It is the junction area where material flows converge inside the welding chamber. The variables that have to be controlled for improving the material characteristics in this zone are the effective stress, the pressure and the time that the material takes to cross the welding chamber. Moreover, material temperature is another fundamental issue that in…

Anisotropy of the stiffness and strength of rigid low-density closed-cell polyisocyanurate foams

2016

The cells of polymer foams are usually extended in the foam rise direction, causing a geometrical anisotropy, the degree of which, characterized by the cell aspect ratio R, depends on foam density and production method. Such elongated cell shape translates into anisotropy of the mechanical properties of foams. Rigid low-density closed-cell polyisocyanurate foams of apparent density ranging from ca. 30 to 75 kg/m3, containing polyols derived from renewable resources, have been produced and tested for the stiffness and strength in the foam rise and transverse directions in order to experimentally characterize their mechanical anisotropy. Analytical relations for foams with rectangular paralle…

Gamma-ray spectrometric measurement of radionuclide purity of radiopharmaceuticals contained in bottle samples

2012

The radionuclide purity of a radiopharmaceutical product is usually measured by gamma-ray spectrometry with various measurement geometries. The importance of this test is that the radionuclide impurities, if present, result in an increase in the radiation dose to the patient without contributing to diagnostic information and in some cases may also interfere with the marking molecules and affect the proper conduct of diagnostic examination. In this work, gamma-ray spectrometry is used to determine the amounts of impurities by adopting as measurement geometry the same bottle containing eluted or prepared radiopharmaceuticals. In addition to high-purity germanium semiconductor detectors, the u…

Ultrasonic phased array inspection of wire plus arc additive manufacture samples using conventional and total focusing method imaging approaches

2019

In this study, three aluminium samples produced by wire + arc additive manufacture (WAAM) are inspected using ultrasonic phased array technology. Artificial defects are machined using a centre drill, ø 3 mm, and electrical discharge machining (EDM), ø 0.5-1 mm, in a cylindrical through-hole topology. The samples are first inspected using a single-element wheel probe mounted on a KUKA robot in order to investigate the feasibility of using a conventional ultrasonic transducer approach. Unfortunately, the wheel probe is found to be unsuitable for scanning the WAAM specimens and ultrasonic phased arrays are employed next. The set-up includes 5 MHz and 10 MHz arrays (128 elements) in direct cont…

Fracture behavior and mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of biodegradable films extruded by flat die and calender

2020

The development of biodegradable materials for tailored applications, particularly in the field of polymeric films and sheets, is a challenging technological goal as well as a contribution to help protect the environment. Poly(lactic) acid (PLA) is a promising substitute for several oil-based polymers; however, to overcome its thermal and mechanical drawbacks, researchers have developed solutions such as blending PLA with polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), which is capable of increasing the ductility of the final material. In this study, PLA/PBAT binary blends, with minimum possible content of nonrenewable materials, were examined from processing, thermal, morphological, and rheolog…

Digital video-electrochemistry (DVEC) to assess electrochromic materials in the frequency domain: RGB colorimetry impedance spectroscopy

2021

Abstract This work is the first one allowing the characterization of electrochromic devices simultaneously at various parts on their surface and different rates of color change. We describe a new proficient and affordable methodology for reporting electrochromic parameters such as coloration efficiency, optical contrast, and switching time based on the use of digital video-electrochemistry (DVEC) in the ac regime, namely RGB colorimetry impedance spectroscopy. Simultaneously with the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the RGB color changes of an electrochromic electrode were recorded by a CCD digital camera at 120 digital images per second. In such conditions, RGB electrochromic change…

Experimental and numerical analysis of aluminum-aluminum bolted joints subject to an indentation process

2015

Abstract The increasing interest of the industry (especially automotive, aviation and marine) in the fastener joints (riveted, bolted, etc.) between metallic materials, has re-opened the study on the possibility to improve the performance of the drilled structure using plastic deformation processes. Indentation process, performed before the drilling operation, creates circumferential compression stresses around the hole which increase significantly the mechanical performance of the drilled structures. In this paper, static and the fatigue performances of aluminum–aluminum (AW 6082-T6) single-lap bolted joints are studied. In particular, the study compares the mechanical strength of only dri…

Study and design of a controlled oscillator for an embedded system to measure the complex impedance of PEM fuel cell »

2017

We present in this paper the study and the design of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) for an embedded system to diagnose the PEM fuel cell. Some problems related to fuel cells used in the electric vehicle field are the management of its efficiency and the lifetime of its membranes. To do this, the diagnosis using measuring the complex impedance is an important phase. It is based on the injection of a perturbation signal at the output of the PEM fuel cell, then we observe its behavior by measuring its impedance. The used measurement method is the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using the load modulation technique, which is implemented in an embedded measurement system based…

Experimental investigation on compressive behavior of bottle-shaped struts

2011

The goal of this investigation was the experimental verification of the dispersion of compression in bottle-shaped struts. Two typical bottle shapes were generated under load in compression concrete—both drilled and undrilled—and were reinforced concrete prismatic members with loading steel plate having a reduced area with respect to the entire cross section of the members. Axial load, and axial and lateral strains were recorded during the tests to evaluate the effects of key parameters. The comparative analysis of the experimental results showed that: 1) the presence of a hole produces a variation on the stress and strain distribution and a reduction in the load-carrying capacity; 2) the r…
