The Continuous Extrusion Process CONFORM: a full 3D Thermal and Mechanical Analysis

2000

The principle of the Conform extrusion process is based on the action of a rotating wheel that drags and push the feed material by means of the frictional force existing between them. The Conform process has several advantages over the traditional extrusion processes. The preheating phase may be neglected, so that furnaces for heating are not necessary; furthermore, the product is continuous and welding phase of the billets is not required. The influence of three operative parameters, die geometry, velocity and die cooling rate, has been analysed in this paper by means of an “outranking approach” able to give precious indications for the assessment of the process.

A comparative evaluation of crashworthy composite sandwich structures

2007

Abstract This paper describes an experimental evaluation of the energy absorption properties of a series of novel designs for cost-effective crashworthy composite sandwich structures. All the designs are based on the concept of the “tied-core” sandwich, i.e. the use of additional core reinforcements that act to tie the opposing facings of a sandwich together, thus preventing catastrophic failure under edgewise loading. The design, manufacture and crush testing of hollow rectangular tubes fabricated from six different tied-core concepts is described. Factors that are shown to promote high energy absorption include large, continuous areas of contact between the facings and the ties, non-thin …

An analytical model for improving precision in single point incremental forming

2007

Abstract In the modern manufacturing scenario and, in particular, in sheet metal forming, the requirement of customised production is still growing. The introduction of incremental forming enables the production of customised components in small lots. In particular, single point incremental forming is characterised by the simplest equipment; any die, in fact, is avoided reducing the necessary tooling to a simple frame, able to clamp the sheet, and a hemispherical punch that imposes the required deformation. This tooling simplicity and the associated process mechanics, in turn, determine a sometimes relevant lack of accuracy. The paper is focused on the investigation of the influence of the …

Information Ecology as a holistic lens to understand ICTD initiatives

2016

Techno-centric initiatives to bridge the digital divide, such as One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been criticized for not taking a holistic approach. This has led to limited success in areas such as providing quality education in developing countries. In this paper, we offer a premise for a holistic understanding by borrowing from the field of information ecology. To illustrate our premise, we applied the theoretical lens of information ecology to analyze a case study of Open Learning Exchange (OLE) which has been described as one of the few successes in implementing OLPC. Based on our analysis, we posit that information ecology is a suitable and appropriate lens to interpret and understand…

Decentralized price-driven grid balancing via repurposed electric vehicle batteries

2017

Abstract The share of electricity generated from intermittent renewable sources, e.g., wind and solar grows rapidly. This affects grid stability and power quality. If the share of renewable power generation is to be increased further, additional flexibilities must be introduced. Aggregating small, distributed loads and energy storage facilities is a good medium-term option. In this paper, the suitability of decentralized and on-site optimized storage system consisting of repurposed electric vehicle batteries for grid balancing is investigated. Battery operation is controlled via an optimization procedure, which relies on a one-way communicated pseudo-cost function (PCF). Day-ahead electrici…

Reliable estimates in the anisotropic heat conduction problems

2014

Abstract The heat conduction problems for anisotropic bodies are studied taking into account the uncertainties in the material orientation. The best estimations of the upper and lower bounds of the considered energy dissipation functional are based on developing new approach consisting in solution of some optimization problems and finding the extremal internal material structures, which realize minimal and maximal dissipation. The motivation of this study comes from paper making processes, and more precisely, drying process, which consumes about 50% of the energy fed into the paper machine. The understanding of the effect of uncertainties in the process arises from structural properties of …

Sensor-Assisted Machining

2008

This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding the application of various sensors and monitoring techniques to machining processes, cutting tools and machine tools. A number of monitoring methods used in manufacturing and relevant sensors are characterized. In particular, three most frequently used sensors, i.e., force, acceleration and acoustic emission, are presented and their characteristics and advantages are highlighted. The architectures of multiple-sensor tool-monitoring systems for detection of tool wear and breakage and collision for machine tools, including details of sensor fusion, signal processing and decision-making, are presented. Moreover, the concepts of sensor-bas…

Different Wings Flowfields Interaction on the Wing-Propeller Coupling

1997

A high-portability numerical technique based on the method of free wake analysis (FWA) is described that analyzes the interference between an aircraft propeller and a wing having different planforms and computes the influence of the wing aerodynamic field on the propeller performance. For an isolated propeller and wing, the models employed are based on the FWA and Prandtl theory, respectively. The performance of the propeller in the presence of the wing is related to the wing angle of attack and to the variation of wing circulation and the corresponding induced velocity at the propeller disk. A numerical model, previously and successfully used, was implemented to account for the effects of …
