Excess enthalpies of solution of primary and secondary alcohols in dodecyldimethylamine oxide micellar solutions

The excess enthalpies of solution with respect to water of some primary and secondary alcohols in dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) micellar solutions were measured by mixing aqueous solutions of alcohols with surfactant solutions. Standard free energies, enthalpies and entropies were obtained from the distribution of alcohols between aqueous and micellar phases. It is shown that thermodynamics of transfer of secondary alcohols from aqueous to the DDAO micellar phase differ slightly from those of their corresponding primary alcohols, that the additivity rule holds for free energies of transfer and that enthalpy and entropy display convex curves. Abstract In this work, experimental liquid–liquid equilibria data of the systems 4-methyl-2-pentanone + ethanol + water and 4-methyl-2-pentanone + n-butanol + water are presented. The liquid–liquid equilibria of both systems have been measured between 283.2 and 323.2 K. The NRTL and UNIQUAC models were applied to fit the data for both ternary systems. The interaction parameters obtained from both models successfully correlated the equilibrium compositions. The binodal lines were compared to the values predicted by the UNIFAC-LLE and UNIFAC models. Moreover, the solvent capability of 4-methyl-2-pentanone was checked in order to separate these azeotropic mixtures alcohol + water.

Enthalpies of solution and dilution of butanol and pentanol in dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide micellar solutions

The enthalpies of solution and of dilution of 1-butanol and 1-pentanol were measured in micellar solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide by systematically changing the concentration of alcohols and surfactant. The enthalpies of solution at infinite dilution of alcohols at each surfactant concentration were evaluated from a linear plot. This quantity increases with surfactant concentration (up to 0.8m) with a curvature which depends on the alcohol alkyl chain length. Performance and modelling of retention in microemulsion liquid chromatography

Abstract The capability of liquid chromatography with microemulsions (MEs) as mobile phases was studied for the analysis of four parabens (butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben) and seven β-adrenoceptor antagonists (acebutolol, atenolol, carteolol, metoprolol, oxprenolol, propranolol, and timolol). Comparison of the performance of butanol and pentanol as modifiers in the micellar chromatographic determination of some phenethylamines

Abstract A procedure was developed for the determination of several phenethylamines (amphetamine, arterenol, ephedrine, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine, mephentermine, methoxyphenamine, pseudoephedrine and tyramine), using micellar mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a C18 column and UV detection. The drugs were eluted at short retention times with conventional acetonitrile–water or methanol–water mobile phases. Comparison of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation and separate hydrolysis and fermentation processes for butanol production from rice straw

Abstract Rice straw (RS) is one of the lignocellulosic wastes with the highest global production. The main objective of this study was to maximise the butanol production by Clostridium beijerinckii DSM 6422 from RS pretreated by microwave-assisted hydrothermolysis. Two different fermentation strategies were compared: separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF, two-step process) and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF, one-step process). In parallel, the variables that significantly affected the butanol production were screened by using fractional factorial designs. Molecular association and dynamics in n-pentanol and 2-methyl-2-butanol

Static dielectric constant, viscosity, density, ultrasonic and dielectric relaxation measurements are reported for two pentanol isomers (n-pentanol and 2-methyl-2-butanol) in a wide range of temperatures. The results show a different extent of H-bonds self-association in relation to the molecular geometry of the alcohol. The activation energies obtained from dielectric and ultrasonic studies are compared with those obtained from viscous flow. In reversed-phase micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) organic modifiers are usually added to the mobile phase to modify the eluent strength and to increase the efficiency of the chromatographic peaks. Performance of a series of novel N-substituted acrylamides in capillary electrophoresis of DNA fragments

DNA separations by capillary electrophoresis in viscous solutions of novel polymers, made with Ω-hydroxyl, N-substituted acrylamides (notably N-acryloyl amino propanol, AAP and N-acryloyl amino butanol, AAB) are evaluated. Whereas in standard poly(acrylamide), at 6% concentration, the theoretical plate number (N) does not exceed 500 000, in 6% poly(AAP) N reaches 922 000 and in 6% poly(AAB) N values as high as 1 200 000 are obtained. Also, copolymers of AAP and AAB give N values in excess of 1 million plates. Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibrium of Binary Mixtures of 1-Butanol + Chlorobenzene and 2-Butanol + Chlorobenzene at 20 and 100 kPa

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria were obtained for 1-butanol + chlorobenzene and for 2-butanol + chlorobenzene systems at 20 and 100 kPa using a dynamic still. The experimental error in temperature was ±0.1 K, in pressure ±0.01 kPa and ±0.1 kPa for the experiments carried out at 20 and 100 kPa, respectively, and in liquid and vapor composition ±0.001. The two systems satisfy the point-to-point thermodynamic consistency test. Both systems show a positive deviation from ideality. The data were correlated with the Wilson equation.
