2009

In last years several methodologies have been developed for guided tours of cultural heritage supported by handheld computers (PocketPC). The instruments used for this purpose are pocketPC, possibly equipped with a GPS receiver, which offer contents related to the place where the visitor is at that moment. This paper concerns the design of an innovative multimedia guide running on handheld computers to support the visit of archaeological sites. To that end the performances of various mobile phones and pocketPCs, equipped with low-cost GPS, have been tested; an application software developed by the Palermo research Unit has been installed into these devices to locate in real time the positio…

Design and implementation of an augmented reality application for rock art visualization in Cova dels Cavalls (Spain)

2019

[EN] Prehistoric rock art paintings, specifically rock-shelters exposed to environmental and anthropogenic factors, are usually faint and severely damaged, being them difficult to identify and understand by visitors. Augmented Reality (AR) supplements reality with virtual information superimposed onto the real world. This sensor-based technology in smartphones/tablets can improve the paintings experience displaying the 2D digital tracings overlapped onto the real scene (rock with faint paintings). This paper presents an AR application (app) developed in Cova dels Cavalls that shows a recreation of a possible original composition full of motifs with descriptive information to improve current…

Color degradation mapping of rock art paintings using microfading spectrometry

2021

[EN] Rock art documentation is a complex task that should be carried out in a complete, rigorous and exhaustive way, in order to take particular actions that allow stakeholders to preserve the archaeological sites under constant deterioration. The pigments used in prehistoric paintings present high light sensitivity and rigorous scientific color degradation mapping is not usually undertaken in overall archaeological sites. Microfading spectrometry is a suitable technique for determining the light-stability of pigments found in rock art paintings in a non-destructive way. Spectral data can be transformed into colorimetric information following the recommendations published by the Commission …

2020

[EN] In recent years, the use of three-dimensional (3D) models in cultural and archaeological heritage for documentation and dissemination purposes has increased. New geomatics technologies have significantly reduced the time spent on fieldwork surveys and data processing. The archaeological remains can be documented and reconstructed in a digital 3D environment thanks to the new 3D survey technologies. Furthermore, the products generated by modern surveying technologies can be reconstructed in a virtual environment on effective archaeological bases and hypotheses coming from a detailed 3D data analysis. However, the choice of technologies that should be used to get the best results for dif…

The discovery of the remains of a Spanish Civil War soldier, gave rise to an extensive archaeological survey with metal detector, which allowed to recover several thousand objects and document more than a hundred structures.

An execution in medieval Sicily: Computerised tomography scan analysis and 3D reconstruction of an ancient forensic context

2019

The bioarchaeological and forensic approach is increasingly applied in the study of funerary contexts in archaeology. Here, we present a case of an atypical medieval burial recently discovered in Piazza Armerina (Sicily), in which the integrated use of traditional bioarchaeological and forensic anthropology methods was crucial. The skeleton was lying in a prone position and was characterised by a peculiar injury pattern. We recorded six clear stab wound marks on the posterior surface of the sternum. The use of computerised tomography scan and 3D modelling techniques has made it possible to obtain a reliable reconstruction of the cause and modality of death, pointing to the execution of the …

A central italian coin with Dyonysus/Panther types, and contacts between Central Italy and Spain in the 2nd and 1rst centuries BC

2014

BIM Modelling of Ancient Buildings

2018

In the last years, new procedures on design and management of constructions, based on 3D standardised models of building elements, have been proposed. It’s the case of Building Information Modelling (BIM) applications, that, differently from CAD ones, allow to work with libraries of 3D parametrical objects (smart objects) describing geometric, structural and material properties of building elements. This methodology is based on the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) model, that represents a global standard for the building data exchange. Initially used for the design of new architectures, BIM methodology has been even more considered also for the management and the conservation of historical…
