Tissue Engineering Biopolymers

2011

Tissue engineering has always been a multidisciplinary research area focused on tissue regeneration and restoration of organs function, through implantation of cells or tissues growing outside the body. According to increase in knowledge of the interactions between living organisms and biomaterials, development and diversification of biocompatible devices has brought the world of medicine to what has been the greatest therapeutic revolution of our times. The main challenge of biomaterials is not only related to "tolerance-biocompatibility" by the body but also in its functionality. A biomaterial must be able to positively interact with tissues and exercise those functions for which it was d…

A Method to Extract the Complete Fiber Network Topology of Planar Fibrous Tissues and Scaffolds.

2010

Improving fabrication protocols and design strategies, investigating on how scaffold architecture affects cell morphology, metabolism and phenotypic expression, predicting mechanical behaviors, have increasingly become crucial goals in the development of engineered tissue scaffolds. In the present study, an image-based analysis approach that provides an automatic tool to fully characterize engineered tissues fiber network topology was developed. The following micro architectural features are detected: fiber angle distribution, fiber connectivity, fiber overlap spatial density, fiber diameter. In order to demonstrate the potential of this approach Electrospun poly(ester urethane)urea (ES-PEU…

Scaffolding adult immigrant students in an EFL lesson

2012

Oppimisprosessi on luonteeltaan enemmänkin sosiaalinen kuin yksilöllinen. Tämä lähestymistapa on hyödyllinen myös aikuisille maahanmuuttajaopiskelijoille, koska sosiokulttuuriseen näkemykseen perustuvassa oppimisympäristössä he oppivat sekä oppiainetta että perehtyvät yhteiskunnan kulttuuriin, johon he sopeutuvat turvallisessa ja kannustavassa ympäristössä muiden seurassa. Sosiokulttuurisen teorian mukaan oppiminen on opettajan ja opiskelijoiden välisen vuorovaikutuksen seuraus, joka tapahtuu opiskelijoiden lähikehityksen vyöhykkeellä (the zone of proximal development, ZPD). Lähikehityksen vyöhyke on oppimisen todellisen kehitystason ja potentiaalisen kehitystason välinen ero. Toisin sanoen…

Sterilization of three-dimensional tissue engineering scaffolds by supercritical carbon dioxide

2014

Medical devices, implants or patient-care equipment that will come into intimate contact with a patient must be effectively decontaminated to prevent infection or disease transmission. Non-sterile devices have significant ramifications for patient morbidity and mortality and two processes must be undertaken in order to make an item acceptable for use or implantation: cleaning and disinfection (or sterilization) [1]. Sterilization is the destruction of living organisms, and must be done without damaging the material surface and without compromising the bulk material strength or biocompatibility of implantable device. Common sterilization processes include steam autoclaving, gamma irradiation…

Developing inclusive education policy and practice in Zanzibar : collaborative action research

2018

This doctoral dissertation, which consists of three interrelated sub-studies and an overarching summary, explores the inclusive education development process in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The purpose of the research is to contribute to the development of inclusive policies and practices in order to increase the presence, participation and achievement of all learners. The overarching research question investigated in this research was as follows: How is inclusive education developed in Zanzibar, and how can it be better integrated into the education system? This question was divided into six sub-questions. Each of the three interrelated sub-studies in this dissertation focused on specific sub-quest…

Supercritical carbon dioxide induces sterilization of PLLA scaffolds contaminated by E. coli.

2014

The common sterilization techniques are based on physical processes that involve, for example, the use of autoclaves or systems to radiation such as γ-rays that can cause a structural change of the polymer treated. Therefore, the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is an excellent alternative, as it does not induce any variation of biomaterials treated (Perrut M., 2012). It's a good candidate because is readily available at low cost, non-toxic and non-flammable, it has an easily accessible critical point (7.38 MPa and 304.2 K) and excellent transport properties and wettability (White A. et al., 2005). We report the development of a supercritical CO2 based process capable of steriliz…
