Exploring students’ proof comprehension of the Cauchy Generalized Mean Value Theorem

AbstractUndergraduate students majoring in mathematics often face difficulties in comprehending mathematical proofs. Inspired by a number of studies related to students’ proof comprehension, and Mejia-Ramos et al.’s study in particular, a test was designed in relation to the proof comprehension of the Cauchy Generalized Mean Value Theorem (CGMVT). A new dynamic identification technique: application to the evaluation of the equivalent strut for infilled frames

A new time domain identification technique for systems under Gaussian white noise input is presented, requiring for its application the measurement of the system response but no information about input intensity. The technique proposed is based on the statistic moment equations derived by using a special class of mathematical models named "potential models". These models allow one to determine fundamental properties of the response statistics, making it possible to identify stiffness and dissipation features of a structural system, and also to determine the excitation input. Optimality conditions for shakedown design of trusses

This paper deals with optimal shakedown design of truss structures constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material. The design problem is formulated by means of a statical approach on the grounds of the shakedown lower bound theorem, and by means of a kinematical approach on the grounds of the shakedown upper bound theorem. In both cases two different types of design problem are formulated: one searches for the minimum volume design whose shakedown limit load is assigned; the other searches for the maximum shakedown limit load design whose volume is assigned. Stochastic analysis of external and parametric dynamical systems under sub-Gaussian Levy white-noise

In this study stochastic analysis of non-linear dynamical systems under α-stable, multiplicative white noise has been conducted. The analysis has dealt with a special class of α-stable stochastic processes namely sub-Gaussian white noises. On Computational Properties of a Posteriori Error Estimates Based upon the Method of Duality Error Majorants

In the present paper, we analyze computational properties of the functional type a posteriori error estimates that have been derived for elliptic type boundary-value problems by duality theory in calculus of variations. We are concerned with the ability of this type of a posteriori estimates to provide accurate upper bounds of global errors and properly indicate the distribution of local ones. A Novel Mathematical Model For TLCD: Theoretical And Experimental Investigations

In this paper, a novel mathematical model for the Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) is presented. Taking advantages of fractional derivatives and related concepts, a new equation of motion of the liquid inside the TLCD is obtained. Experimental laboratory tests have been performed in order to validate the proposed linear fractional formulation. Comparison among experimental results, numerical obtained using the classical formulation and numerical with the new linear fractional formulation are reported. On the influence of the initial ramp for a correct definition of the parameters of fractional viscoelastic materials

Creep and/or Relaxation tests on viscoelastic materials show a power-law trend. Based upon Boltzmann superposition principle the constitutive law with a power-law kernel is ruled by the Caputo's fractional derivative. Fractional constitutive law posses a long memory and then the parameters obtained by best fitting procedures on experimental data are strongly influenced by the prestress on the specimen. As in fact during the relaxation test the imposed history of deformation is not instantaneously applied, since a unit step function may not be realized by the test machine. Approximate survival probability determination of hysteretic systems with fractional derivative elements

Abstract A Galerkin scheme-based approach is developed for determining the survival probability and first-passage probability of a randomly excited hysteretic systems endowed with fractional derivative elements. Specifically, by employing a combination of statistical linearization and of stochastic averaging, the amplitude of the system response is modeled as one-dimensional Markovian Process.
