Treatment of paediatric urolithiasis by extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy.

1988

Non-surgical removal of renal and ureteral stones has proven successful in adults. In this study, 21 paediatric patients have been treated with the first generation extracorporeal shock-wave lithotriptor and an additional 13 children with a second generation local shock-wave lithotriptor. A total of 47 stones was treated. Treatment-related complications such as colics (17%/18.8%) or fever (8.3%/6.2%) were minimal. Stone passage occurred in 93% and 100%, respectively of each group. Open surgery is still the treatment of choice for large staghorn calculi. Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy can be performed successfully in paediatric nephrolithiasis with stones of limited size.

Gingival recession: prevalence and risk indicators among young greek adults

2014

Objectives: The aim of the current research was to assess the prevalence of gingival recession and to investigate possible associations among this condition, periodontal and epidemiological variables in a sample of young Greek adults in a general dental practice. Material and Methods: A total of 1,430 young adults was examined clinically and interviewed regarding several periodontal and epidemiological variables. Collected data included demographic variables, oral hygiene habits and smoking status. Clinical examination included the recording of dental plaque, supragingival calculus presence, gingival status and buccal gingival recession. Multivariate logistic regression analysis model was p…

Understanding the microbial biogeography of ancient human dentitions to guide study design and interpretation

To access the final edited and published work see DOI: 10.1093/femsmc/xtac006 The oral cavity is a heterogeneous environment, varying in factors such as pH, oxygen levels, and salivary flow. These factors affect the microbial community composition and distribution of species in dental plaque, but it is not known how well these patterns are reflected in archaeological dental calculus. In most archaeological studies, a single sample of dental calculus is studied p…

Systematic implementation of higher order Whitney forms in methods based on discrete exterior calculus

2022

AbstractWe present a systematic way to implement higher order Whitney forms in numerical methods based on discrete exterior calculus. Given a simplicial mesh, we first refine the mesh into smaller simplices which can be used to define higher order Whitney forms. Cochains on this refined mesh can then be interpolated using higher order Whitney forms. Hence, when the refined mesh is used with methods based on discrete exterior calculus, the solution can be expressed as a higher order Whitney form. We present algorithms for the three required steps: refining the mesh, solving the coefficients of the interpolant, and evaluating the interpolant at a given point. With our algorithms, the order of…

Topics in calculus and geometry on metric spaces

2022

In this thesis we present an overview of some important known facts related to topology, geometry and calculus on metric spaces. We discuss the well known problem of the existence of a lipschitz equivalent metric to a given quasiultrametric, revisiting known results and counterexamples and providing some new theorems, in an unified approach. Also, in the general setting of a quasi-metric doubling space, suitable partition of unity lemmas allows us to obtain, in step two Carnot groups, the well known Whitney’s extension theorem for a given real function of class C^m defined on a closed subset of the whole space: this result relies on relevant properties of the symmetrized Taylor’s polynomial…

Applications of Microlocal Analysis in Inverse Problems

2020

This note reviews certain classical applications of microlocal analysis in inverse problems. The text is based on lecture notes for a postgraduate level minicourse on applications of microlocal analysis in inverse problems, given in Helsinki and Shanghai in June 2019.
